- Ryan Hayashi explains how the lowest point in his life-facing a felony drug charge in high school-became the starting point for a great transformation. Using his Buddhist practice of chanting nam-myoho-renge-kyo, Ryan uses the suffering caused from his troubled youth to understand the suffering of others. Upon graduating college he enters the highly selective program Teach for America, and teaches at a alternative high school in Anthony, New Mexico, where he teaches and empowers the kind of at-risk youth he himself was just a few years ago.
This series follow members of the Buddhist organization, SGI-USA, as they share their real life stories of practicing Buddhism in America.

as one of pioneer (12/1/68) members of SGI-USA, I viewed your video Ryan with great hope for the future of America and great pride in the foundations we built. Your experience was solid proof of the validity of Nichiren Buddhism the way we practice it in the SGI with our Mentor, Daisaku Ikeda. By the way, I was a math major and I taught for two years myself and keenly understood what you experienced as I had similar experiences myself.
I've been inspired with your video. I graduated from Soka univ. So your energetic spirit for education reminded me why I'm in Canada now. To polish up my English, I watch your video every day. Thank you for sharing your experience, Ryan!

I loved this! I was an art teacher in Detroit for twenty years because a great teacher, Dr. Reynaldo Ruiz, from NM encouraged me to apply for the bilingual teacher program. You seem to be doing the same, so I love it. I will soon have something that you will appreciate. My niece, Nia Mora, taught me the NMRK chant when she came to visit us in Kaua'i. Her twin, Naima also is a practicing SGI member. Kudos for your work and testimony.

Wow, the quality of these videos keeps getting better, as well as the quality of storytelling.
This is a video I can show people and feel that it communicates what I want to say about my Nichiren Buddhist practice.
Thank you, Ryan. You are a great inspiration! 🌸
Very touching and inspiring...to see how a person can over come a difficult time in life, rise above it, move past it, and give back to others. Very inspiring! And proud of you! You rock!
Thank you for sharing your wonderful story of human revolution.
Thank you. You have reminded me to keep practicing. I need to change my life as well.

Great experience!! BSGI BRASIL!!!!
Very very inspiring !
This video shows exactly what human revolution means.. changing every negative in us into positive 🙏
I tried it does work, you should practice for happiness, it's wonderful practice!!!!!!!!!
So beautiful experience. Thanks for sharing, and thanks Sensei Daisaku Ikeda to make this possible. 🙏
Good experience. I couldn't help thinking about the madness of laws that turn you into a criminal for altering your consciousness with a plant - something people do with alcohol every day, and something that is a part of exploring and growing up. While Ryan used this experience to deepen his faith, he should never have been arrested in the first place. I hope that young people will take the opportunity to rid this madness from society in the future.
+Moogleification really alcohol is Justas bad if not worse!
Well Done ! As an SGI member for over 30 years, I say, well done .
Only thing I would change is the videos of people chanting with their hands in front of their mouths. In front of the heart is how President Ikeda chants - looks more dignified. . . Thanks
Very inspiring ! you are an example of changing poison in to medicine and helpings to do the same .THANK YOU
Ryan, you are amazing!! You really inspire me! Keep up the great work! :)
I can relate.. I stopped practicing during my early adult hood.. my mom still practices.. but i chant every now and then.. sadly in Maryland there are hardly anyone that practices : (

I wonder how Ryan is doing now amidst this global pandemic. Americans are suffering and I am sure students are forgotten and neglected.
