Bara Imambara - Legacy of the Nawabs

This is the central hall of the Bara Imambara, an architectural marvel in the heart of Lucknow, the old capital of the Nawabs of Awadh.
The hall is one of the largest free-standing arched constructions without support beams in the world!
Constructed in 1784 by Nawab Asaf-ud-Daula, the complex is a masterpiece of Mughal architecture, reflecting the maturation of ornamented Mughal design.
This grand structure was built to provide employment to his subjects during a severe famine in 1783-84, exemplifying the Nawab's commitment to social welfare.
The Imambara complex also houses the famous Bhool Bhulaiya and the magnificent Asfi Mosque, which stand as a testament to Lucknow's rich culture and heritage.
