Great video. I couldn't see the back of the 5227 GMC Fishbowl, but the green one does not have air conditioning. Yes, they were hot as an oven in the summer months. The Fishbowls that did have ac had the unit mounted on top of the bus in the rear. The ac was okay, not very cold because the bus was in stop and go city traffic most of the time so the diesel engine couldn't maintain the rpms to keep the compressor at optimal operation. With the ac running, it really taxed the engine and hindered the acceleration and speed of the bus.
That's the great thing about living in New York City if you do not have a car it doesn't matter you have all the trains and buses right there to take you wherever you want to go
I remember all the fishbowl GM buses ,i also remember being inside one that my friends pops was driving & some idiot ran a red light & the bus driver just hit the red light runner instead of jamming on the brakes & causing injuries to his passengers, smart move as the other driver was at fault, we hardly felt the collision, it was built like a tank ,loved that the windows opened on those buses too ,but my favorite bus is the 1980's & 1990's GMC RTS2 (modern one) those was cool ,also those buses was used overseas as well & Daewoo/GM built a variant of it as well in South Korea for the Korean domestic market, they was solid
Back in the early 80's i remember seeing a bunch of GM fishbowl buses stored on a pier in Staten Island collapse & they was about a dozen fishbowls in the water ,some was still floating & others went down like a rock ,they recovered them by crane & barge
8:26 same here man. Grew in Bronx then Staten Island; my parents used to take the x13 (or x11) express but to/from the city back in the late 70s and this is pretty much the exact model of those buses. I recall them having decently cushioned seat seats which made them stand out from the local buses.

Which means that bus was still running in 1970 when the fare went up to 20 cent.
There are actually 2 GM Fishbowls there, the third one is a Flxible; it definitely looks similar to the GM buses and they were both manufactured for many years with little change in appearance. I’m sure the ‘59 didn’t have power steering.
The real sad part is they had torn down the 8 Thrid Ave Elevated line down in the Bronx. Another sad thing they should of have kept the trains running across Brooklyn Bridge.
Unfortunately the world was changing also the population of New York City they had to get rid of the Third Avenue trains and the Brooklyn Bridge trains to make room for the exploding population and all the cars
@@44849 That's why The Third Avenue El was built in the first place. To ease the traffic of the very slow Horse & carriages , no they didn't have to get rid of it , they neglected it failed to maintain it , cuts in maintenance & cancelling the Second Avenue Subway project, The MTA at that time had low ridership not only The 8 train , I noticed this on all the lines in the Bronx especially on the 4 Woodlawn Jerome Line & The Grand Concourse D line, during off peak. The area the 8 or Shuttle served really got screwed from this it got only worse with failed Bronx 55 bus & the horrible service & overcrowded Bx 41 and Bx 15 . All Transit traffic across The Brooklyn Bridge discontinued ? Strange ? After the BRT later BMT lines trolleys ran along the former Elevated tracks but unfortunately that did last. All this was to blame for all that was former NYC Mayor Laguadia . He technically way after Tamminy Hall destroyed the city Transit . By removing Trolleys & all the elevated lines. Incidentally their are a lot of abandoned underground subway lines on the BMT & IND , many on the IRT can still be seen on the East & West side. Even one line in Brooklyn. No politics destroyed the line. No the line could have been saved or rebuilt no capital improvement projects for the 8 train. Funny I saw no car traffic after the 8 was removed I had rode my bicycle on Third Avenue & was empty hardly no traffic. No slow buses through out the crosstown routes no the line should have been saved not trashed like it was. Whether anyone can admit it or not I'm sure they regret it The MTA overcrowded the Lexington Avenue line. No they didn't have to get rid of it, just in Manhattan to connect it to the Lexington Avenue line or original underground Third Avenue stops that it had when it was as an El. It could have terminated at South Ferry with the Broadway 1 train & the R & W lines. Well they didn't & the they MTA blew it .

When the former el lines were already in service the IRT was being built underground, and afterwards The IRT took over all the El lines in Manhattan, Queens Second Avenue line , today's (N ,W & 7) Trains. All The original lines including the Els had a 999 year lease. Which the City overruled that in other words broke the laws - demised the Third Avenue as well as the IRT El lines in Manhattan.

That was the greatest SIN the City of New York committed when the closed the 3rd Avenue Elevated Line in 1956 without a 2nd Avenue Subway line to replace it !!! What a damn shame 68 years later !!!
Why the heck did they repaint 4727 in two-tone blue? I thought the idea was to restore them to original livery? Also, the curbside number looks like it has been placed too far back. What a mess.
LMAO. A Bus driver. As well as tractor trailer drivers all use the side mirrors. That's why most people people can't drive a bus or a tractor trailer. It's easy for some. That's why drivers are hard to come by. Just Saying.
I am bus driver been one since 1988 I have never ever driven a bus with no power steering. Dont know if you live in New York but Manhattan with constant traffic. the same with Brooklyn and the Bronx with narrow streets and triple park cars. delivery trucks. squeezing through with just inches to spare it is difficult for a bus driver with power steering to get through all of that let alone one without. I've seen a bus in the city last month with double axles. When you turn your steering wheel the rear wheels turn slightly to help you make sharp corners even with that this guy had to back up could not make it down the street. So imagine one without power steering so yeah lots of respect for those guys back in the day.

@@leecornwell5632 I did ride on the 3rd Ave. Elevated in the Bronx back in 1972. It was also known as the Central Bronx Elevated and it got people places faster than a bus in a blizzard due to being 3 to 6 stories above the streets.
If you think about it they keep the same design for several years so you're not going to get 20 or 25 buses out there and they will keep the same buses in service for over 10 to 15 years but I understand what you are saying

The GM fishbowl Staten Island Express Bus with the green leather forward facing seats & side roof signs. The double Decker 5th Avenue coach Bus from the 1930's . The original Orion Buses ? I have been going to this Museum for years. I stayed this one out.

Bus driver's don't look out the back windows while backing up they use the side mirrors.

I remember riding the old steel buses back in the 70s and the 80s in the Bronx.
Those steel buses is definitely holding it down just like the R32S. And the R62AS R62S.
That's the great thing about living in New York City if you do not have a car it doesn't matter you have all the trains and buses right there to take you wherever you want to go
