Derek Paravicini is a blind pianist from the U.K. Here he jazzifies "The Force" theme. It starts off quite tame but in no time Derek is off playing the strangest quartal chords I've ever heard! Sheet music trivia (first to answer correctly gets PDF): it’s a bit subjective, but amongst all the weird chords I think there is one that stands out singularly as the strangest chord. Can you find it?
not sure why, as it’s harmonically not that weird, but the Bb6+ at the start of bar 30 sounds so odd to me. (think it’s the voice leading, the way it’s approached by the LH chord leaping up like a major 3rd while the melody also leaps up a fifth??) idk man I just made the stank face at that point!
Fun fact: before he was a film composer, John Williams had an extensive career as a jazz pianist. He was mostly known as Johnny Williams and he released several albums under that name.
This is true! Jazz comes through frequently in his orchestral work - it's what sets him apart from everyone else, IMO. :) Another fun fact: his first composing job was in 1952 for the US air force scoring for a German-made documentary about Canadian maritime provinces (he served in the air force there).
It'd be interesting to hear how John Williams himself would tackle jazzier arrangements of his own tunes since he got his start as a jazz pianist before his career in film scoring. he also has a couple great jazzy scores out there this arrangement is great though too! thank you!
I honestly hate all these chords being labelled as "q" when most of them are rootless voicings of common chords, following common harmonic progressions. E.g. "Gbq++ Fq++" is actually just rootless D7alt to G13, so labelling them a "q" ignores the implied harmonic function and makes it all seem much stranger than it actually is!
I read his biography by his mentor Dr Ockleford a few years ago. I genuinely bawled my eyes out at one part of the book, his story is so extraordinary!
He is SO tallented . And seams so easy to him to change a very wellknown theme to what we hear here . Its a joy to listen to . And it`s not easy to sitt still .... 😉😎💚
@@TimothyGondola aka rootless G13... Fq++ isn't a real chord lol. I think "quartal" as a chord name should only be applied if the chord can really only be labelled as such, and not just for any quartal voicing (which is tbh very common in jazz piano)
I thought Derek had disappeared off the map! I remember seeing a documentary about him at-least a decade ago. What a delight it is to listen to him again!!
Now I must learn this...or at least the simpler version at the start. The rest of it is still over my head to varying degrees, but damn it sounds good.

The c halfdim 7 (add3) in 87?
The D+/Bo(M)7 chord in measure 89?

measure 35
Ab dim 7 over Gb2 over Db in measure 35?
I want Charles Cornell to go "wow" at this arrangement
That do be his job now
Post it to his subreddit with caption: the stank face is strong with this one.

His son, Joseph Williams is also the lead singer of the prog-rock band Toto

Really!?
I had the privilege to see him live when he came to Bristol years ago. Still can't get over his jazz chops.
0:57 This is giving me porgy and bess "Summer time" vibes
Sorry, but someone has to write it: Who does not LOVE a Barbecue plus chord (Bbq+)?
Well there are some who have a beef with it...
Marvelous harmonies!

Love it
The "force" is strong in him.
that's insaneeeeee!
I like how he kind of just looks wherever cos you don't need to look at the piano when you're blind! Pretty cool
Superb, loving the stride.
they should’ve been playing this in the mos eisley cantina
Derek Paravicini is so smooth and effortless and creative!
Epicness
Your force is mine BOY
I’ve flown from one side of this galaxy to the other. I’ve seen a lot of strange stuff, but I’ve never seen anything like this.
That first variation is insanely good

Un Genio
Excellent
Has he always played such sophisticated harmonies?
When Darth Vader spoke to Luke about the Dark Side of The Force, musically he was probably referring to this. 😍😍😍😀😀. I love it.

So awesome!
Dude! That C half dim add 3!
Does the chord name "Fq++" indicate a quartile on F with the second and third notes each raised a semitone?
Precisely!

Dereks life story - Sort of related to King Charles!

Jazz rules. But this was convoluted.
could you add a part to your transcribers notes about your quirky chord symbols?
The stank face is strong with this one.
Minute 1:25 Star Wars... But It's A Woody Allen Film.
Because Annie Hall beat Star Wars for best film and director Oscars
Now I must learn this...or at least the simpler version at the start. The rest of it is still over my head to varying degrees, but damn it sounds good.
You don’t mess with perfection. Don’t do this to the force theme
haha what??? this is such a coincidence
dude looks like the emperor lowkey 🤣
Mike Harrison’s Star Wars needs a transcription now…
Would love to hear from Charles Cornell about this
Super 🌺👏🌺
Do it with a Blues arrangement next
The documentary on him is bizarre 😳 he's a genius
“E/Cq++”
Man, Frasier crane sold out.
Ahaha nice
I hear a bit of paganini 24 progression and plant vs zombies
Bravooooooooo !!!!!👏🙌🙌🙌
Never saw the q, q+ or q++ notation for chords. Are those layered fourths?
Yes, quartal is for q
We need a stride piano version of the Cantina Band song.
Martin Spitznagel already did that
Buzz is that you?
what is chord q++ and q?
He was in a vsauce video
execute order 251
☺здорово))) неожиданно!))) молодец!
Does this sound like House of the Rising Sun to anybody?
Isn't this guy a savant?
