    Another well done video of Uptown Saint John! It is nice to walk from the Hilton hotel all the way to the city market. When I was a kid, market square and brunswick square seemed to have a lot more shops. I hope the owners can get some new retailers in the malls and make market square, brunswick square and the city market a busy place again. Thanks for posting your videos about Saint John. It is nice to see my home city because I live out west.

      Thanks Danny. Those malls are emptying out because the rents are too high and there isn't much foot traffic. Many of the businesses are still thriving but have relocated to street front locations. It seems a lot of people left here and moved out west, whereas we did it the other way around and left the west to come to Saint John. I don't think I could go back to BC after living here for the last three years. Thanks again for watching.

    Thanks so much for these videos, I find them super interesting. Like many people in the comments I'm thinking of moving to Saint John. I'd be moving alone though and I don't know anyone there, so this gives me comfort

      Thank you for watching. It can definitely be hard moving to a new place alone. What made you think about Saint John? Where do you live now? Maybe if the channel grows we can start a Facebook group of people moving here to introduce themselves and make new friends.

      @@WeLoveSaintJohn I live in Toronto and grew up here, but sadly it's gotten so expensive. I graduated University a year ago and hope to get a government job in Saint John. Believe it or not it actually feels harder to get a job in Toronto than other places....there's so much competition. I got offers in Vancouver as well but it's so expensive there too. But your videos make me excited at the idea of moving!
      And that sounds like a great idea. I hope the channel grows! The best part of the videos is the enthusiasm you both have. I'll keep watching

      @@oneobjective5448 Thank you for subscribing and for the nice comments. Wendy grew up in Mississauga before moving to Calgary and then to be with me in the Vancouver suburbs where I grew up. We have both experienced the pain of just trying to survive in very expensive cities. Living in Saint John gives us all the benefits of city life with the bonus of fresh air and all the natural beauty only the Maritimes can offer. Our enthusiasm comes from being able to walk on the beach, go uptown for dinner and take in live music from the outdoor stage on the boardwalk without ever wondering how we're going to make our mortgage (or rent) payment. There's no rat race here. Whether working or retired or somewhere in between (like us), you can have a great life. Hope to see you here someday.

    Those restaurants on the board walk in Market Square used to be night clubs.

    I'm in Calgary. We have pedways here as well but nothing like what you guys have in Saint John. I like it. Now that I'm retired this video is making me think of moving there. It would be great to walk from one part of town to the next without having to bundle myself up in winter clothing every half hour. Also, a quick question for you. Do you find that the city's economy has picked up since covid restrictions went down? Thanks.

    • @WeLoveSaintJohn
      @WeLoveSaintJohn  ปีที่แล้ว

      The city's economy is booming. The port is doubling its capacity. The $300M Fundy Quay waterfront project is transforming the cityscape and the city's population is growing far above the national average. The secret is getting out that Saint John is a great place to be.

    Hello Wendy, great videos, I have two questions: 1. Why do you think that Moncton is like Calgary. 2. There are new communities in Saint John? New constructions?. Thanks a lot for your answer in advance

    • @WeLoveSaintJohn
      @WeLoveSaintJohn  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Moncton is very spread out with not much of a downtown, a lot of cookie cutter neighbourhoods, strip malls, chain restaurants and people moving there to make money. Calgary east. There is some new construction and new neighbourhoods in Saint John but you will much more of that in the town of Quispamsis just to the east.

      Thank you. There are plenty of jobs in Saint John (pre-Covid) but they tend to be lower paying than other parts of the country, at least in the private sector. IT, oil and forestry are all big here along with call centres, all trades and anything medical related. All levels of gov't are also big employers and if you happen to be bilingual you are golden. New Brunswick is the only officially bilingual province in Canada. The cost of living, especially housing, is so affordable here.

    It's a wasted idea for them to think of putting a grocery store in Brunswick Square because there's no room for it unless they're going to put a floor / ceiling between either the first and second floor or the second and third floor and they would have to take the escalators out Brentwood Square was better as a mall with many different stores and a food court why they closed everything is beyond me because that was The happening spot aside from city market and market Square there's no place for a grocery store inlet mall unless they take out the food court and put a grocery store underneath that floor there. And I don't know why in that food court in the upper seating area I always feel The haunting presence in that spot like there's something there paranormal every time I went there years ago it felt like something historical that happened there or there's paranormal activity happening there I just don't feel comfortable sitting in that area for some reason. I guess like I said a grocery store would not be a good idea for the model unless I put it where the food court is that's the only spot available and it won't be a big grocery store either

    Hello from Vancouver BC! I noticed from the comments that you moved here from BC 3 years ago? Correct?
    What do you like about Saint John NB, how does it compare to Vancouver..why do you prefer Saint John to BC?
    Also a sensitive question.. Many on TH-cam warn against moving to SJ due to horrible smell and bad ecology oil refineries/pulp?? Also ppl mention recurring fog.. Is this still true? How do you feel there?
    I am looking for options to maybe go to East Coast in next 2-3 years, looking for affordability(lower apt. rent), friendly people, multicultural friendly communities, and most importantly, cities with character and soul.. Your perspective would be greatly appreciated.. 😁👋

    • @WeLoveSaintJohn
      @WeLoveSaintJohn  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Let's start with the sensitive questions. First, fog. Yes, there is a fog belt and we chose to live within it. We love it. It occurs, from our experience, mostly late spring and early summer and then in the evenings later in summer. It keeps us cool on hot days and helps us sleep. You may hate it.
      Pulp mill and refinery, we have one of each. The lower mainland has multiple of each. Do you smell them? I was a courier in Vancouver and delivered regularly to the mills in New West and Coquitlam and refineries in Burnaby and Port Moody. I could smell them if I was there, or if I was nearby and the wind was blowing just right. It's the same here. I'm in my fifties but as a kid the smells were horrible all around Vancouver. I think the smells here were probably really bad too at one time. We notice a faint smell from the mill a few times per year, never yet what I would call offensive. But we live between the ocean and the mill so the wind works well to send the exhaust in a different direction so I can't speak for others.
      When deciding on a place to live we wanted to be near the ocean and in a city. In BC I lived most of my life in Abbotsford and Saint John is similar in size so it's comfortable for us. At the same time, it's very similar to Vancouver in that the downtown core is compact and surrounded by water. Where we live in the west side makes me feel like I'm living in a low budget version of Kitsilano, just across the bridge from downtown (called uptown here) and with several beaches in walking distance. I feel like this whole city is a very scaled down version of Vancouver, only with a lot more history and a lot nicer architecture.
      You know it's very expensive to live in Vancouver, whether you rent or own. We owned a small condo 80 km outside the city and by selling it, we paid off our mortgage, bought a place here that's twice the size for half the price and semi retired, banking the leftover to tide us over until retirement age. We both work part time here, doing jobs we love rather than jobs that pay the most. We are in our early fifties.
      You mention pollution and bad ecology. In the Fraser Valley we would have air quality advisories constantly throughout the summer. If it wasn't the pollution from Vancouver that would hover over the Valley until there was enough wind to get it over the mountains, it was the forest fire smoke coming in from everywhere. I remember days when noon seemed like night from the dark smoke and smog. The crime in the Valley was awful. My wife never felt safe walking our dog at night. Never an issue here. There's crime in every city but it's a walk in the park here compared to where we lived in BC. The traffic was horrendous. Our commutes to Vancouver would often take over two hours. Here, traffic is minimal. I never understood the cliche about friendly Canadians until I moved here. People are generally do much nicer here. Of course there are asshats everywhere but generally speaking it's very noticeable how different people are here.
      So we breathe better, we sleep better, we don't get upright, we don't worry about drive by shootings or used needles in the park. We walk on the beach whenever we want and we have money in the bank. For us, it's a great life.
      There is no one place that fits everyone. I read and saw all the same things you have about this area. Maybe it was true at one time or maybe it's people who never knew how good they had it because they'd never lived anywhere else, but we could have chosen anywhere in the Maritimes to live, and after looking around, Saint John was an easy choice. If you prefer a bigger city, Halifax is also an amazing place, but too big and too expensive for us. Saint John was our Goldilocks.
      If you are looking to rent, uptown had some great rentals, a small fraction of the price of Vancouver and they often include heat. Uptown you wouldn't necessarily need a car and there is awesome culture and ethnic restaurants and shops. The art and music scenes are fantastic too. Rents and home prices are on the rise as more people discover this area. Locals will tell you rents have gotten expensive but it's all relative. You can easily rent a two bedroom apartment uptown with heat included for 900-1000 a month, much less in other areas.
      The backgrounds here are still primarily British and French but immigration drives population growth in this area, and so multiculturalism is alive and well. Inclusivity is prioritized and while there are ignorant people everywhere, people here are generally friendly and therefore generally accepting.
      The one downside we find to this area, as people who like to travel, is flights are not nearly as convenient as Vancouver. You pretty much have to connect in Toronto it Montreal to get anywhere, and it's usually quite expensive. All pre covid of course.
      So three years in, we are in love with Saint John and think it's Canada's best kept secret. We make the videos to share our experiences which are polar opposite to what you see on TH-cam or read on Reddit, and why try to show why we feel the way we do. Please feel free to ask any other questions you may have.

      Sorry, I wrote that reply on my phone, lots of typos. BTW, never seen an air quality advisory here in three years. The ocean makes everything better.

      @@WeLoveSaintJohn Wow.. What a genuine and sincere, as well as detailed and well thought through response.. I will for sure reread it again.. I appreciate you taking time to answer all in such detail, it says a lot about what kind of people you guys are...
      What you said about Vancouver, Abbotsford and Fr. Valley is totally true.. I have been in Vancouver for over 20 years now.. For me it is definitely a home territory, i love it but i am well aware of its downsides and cost of living is of course higher than anywhere else..
      What i find absolutely amazing is that as people we are all so different, each with his/her own perception of reality and creator of their own experience. Therefore people filter out their perception of cities/countries according to their own frequency/model of reality. Your positive perception of Saint John, NB seems to me a lot more realistic than amount of negative reviews on Quora, Reddit and You tube.. Simply because it resonates with my intuition about it, and besides, like you explained, many popular cities in Canada have similar issues and more..
      It sounds from all that you shared here and in your videos that Saint John is entering a serious chance for a revitalisation era and in 10-15 years from now it may no longer be so affordable..For now fortunately, it is relatively undiscovered, i found some recent videos promoting it, but it is still not well known to most people who move to Canada..
      I want to thank you very much for being so conscious and helpful and for sharing about yourselves and your personal story..
      I found quite interesting that you compared your area in SJ westside to Kitsilano.. I actually worked in Kits for about 11years in retail.. So i know the vibe... 😁
      You guys are amazing, and good for you for taking courage to just follow yourselves and to find a place where you feel safer, healthier and more welcome.. Most important is that you do what you love for work and you feel free to enjoy lifestyle you like..
      I will definitely consider Saint John NB once i have enough money and opportunity to travel across Canada..
      Thank you very much so for your feedback..!! I wish you and your wife health, personal fufilment and happiness in your newfound hometown! Will continue following your channel, your videos are superb..
      With much respect to both of you..
      😁🤝👋
      P. s... As for the fog part, the way you described it,i would not have any problem with that.. Gives unique character to the city..as long as there are sunny days as well.. . 😁

      @@joang.6664 Thank you so much, you are very kind. And you are right, revitalization in the city began a couple years before we arrived and its so good to watch how things are happening, particularly uptown. Very recently a $300 million dollar building project was approved for the uptown waterfront which is incredible for the city and will start this summer.
      And yes, so much sunshine. I forgot to mention that as one of our reasons for leaving BC, but after 50 years of incessant rain, it really started getting me down. We will hope to see you in Saint John someday.
