This animation was what inspired me to start my art journey, thank you so much for making an analysis on this great piece of work and naming the animators behind it. I hope Eguchi finds comfort and company in the hospital with his loved ones

This is my favorite Sonic design to this day, alongside Yuji Uekawa's modern take. There's a reason they've returned to the CD-esque Classic design for newer animations like in Mania or Origins.
Really hate people referring to his design as "toei" or "junio" going out of the way to learn the studio but not the artist while reblogging his designs when he posted them really bugged me.
I wanna make a quick note that I'm pretty sure Eguchi was more inspired by Tex Avery than Disney. His profile picture is from the Tex Avery cartoon "Billy Boy." A very funny cartoon, I might add. If you liked this Sonic intro, I think you'll like the fast-paced energy of Avery's stuff. "Billy Boy" is more layed back, though.
Years ago when I first played Sonic CD, I was always captivated by the fluidity and freedom the opening animation felt which was a big inspiration for me. It was nice to learn more about the process of this animation for one of my favorite games.

Hisashi eguchi is proto shida, the timing is so immaculate and is near identical to shidas work with the only different thing is probably the frame repeats and the wormy choreo/camera. Bravo!
As a Sonic fan, ever since watching this Intro as a child, this has been exactly what I think of (alongside the intro to Sonic Riders, which is something I recommend you check out) when I think of the appeal of the character. I didn't know that Hisashi Eguchi himself was the one who bought so much of that intro to life, but I'm glad a legend like him contributed to one of my favorite franchises in such a big way. Let's hope that things go am for him, and if they don't, that he passes peacefully.
Great video man and as usual I learned something new too haha. I had no clue Hisashi Eguchi worked on the Sonic CD opening, that makes me very happy. This has been one of my favourite Sonic-related things and one of my favourite bits of animation period. With a handful of exceptions, there aren't many pieces of media that can depict the speed and athleticism of Sonic quite like this animation does.
Very first thing i really seriously learned to draw was this version of sonic because this sequence is so amazing. I’ve never seen that character sheet before and i find it interesting how the way sonics spikes are drawn is different to the actual animation, being more curved like the official sonic art.

This really was the closest we'd get Sonic in Dragon Ball, with his appearance in that iconic artstyle, he'd fit right in. The Ending animation deserves to be recognized as well, as Sonic gets _really_ expressive there. You can see his attitude on full-display with the way he looks around and interacts with the environment around him.

I first saw it, I believe, in 1993, and it absolutely blew me away even in its small, low-color, and extremely low bitrate Sega CD form. And over the past 30 years, I feel that it's something I can always go back to and never get tired of, and even get more out of as I look further into it.
I wonder who did the sonic OVAs' animation. They have a similar quality as the sonic cd opening. Lots of movement, interaction with the scenery. Very cool.

I care about Sonic and this is one of my favorite animations of all times it’s so smooth. Also it compels the themes of Sonic CD well with him trying to save little planet. The ending animation is also amazing

Definitely not biased, sonic is good! Not much in terms of 2d animation exists, but there is sonic x. Its an anime about sonic. Thats all. And its great! Sometimes. Also sonic takes MANY notes from dragon ball, i love seeing the parallels.
I really wish we could've gotten another 2-D Animated Sonic the Hedgehog Series or Movie since the "Sonic X" Anime after it ended back in 2005 which was the last Full Length 2-D Animation Show in all of Sonic Media.

I'd love to see more sonic stuff like maybe the riders opening, unleashed opening or mania opening although some of these may be out of your area of interest
will you be covering the ending animation? you can't do the opening of CD without the Ending, and then maybe you could examine Sonic Riders animation opening then Sonic Mania, there's not that much animation in the Sonic Games though if you want more Sonic animation in general go with Sonic OVA and Sonic X
I always enjoyed watching this back on the Mega-CD, I had never seen anything like this before in a game, Spider-Man vs. The Kingpin was the only other game I had with animated FMVs, but they weren't anything special. How come you didn't mention the outro FMV?

The intro to Sonic CD is probably the most revered piece of animation in the Sonic fanbase alongside the CGI intro to Sonic Unleashed.
