I found I still have a habit that I picked up in Germany for these situations. For example, the first question I might say, "Hablamos más tarde, ¿O?". Germans have a habit of ending a question with "oder?" ("or?") to get a response. I have to catch myself from doing this in Spanish because I think it sounds cute.
