Your end credits singing is always a highlight of these videos. Your version of 'The Impossible Dream' can simultaneously depress me, but it can also snap me out of a funk sometimes. It formed the backbone of a character I'm writing for. Any chance working on your music could relight some fires? I know many who would love full versions of all these covers. Wanna work on some originals? I'd back a kickstarter for you doing an album about some of your favorite myths and legends.
🥔🥔🥔🥔🥔 I give this video 5 potatoes out of 3. For the duration, for the honesty and openness, and for overall encouragement. Not the 'just try harder' kind of encouragement. More of the 'your work is really appreciated, hopefully you find more of what you enjoy' variety of encouragement.
Also I greatly enjoyed the notion that this is sort of a lore video for OSP. 🥔

To the folks at OSP, thank you for everything. Over 10 years of this channel, 7 years of which I have been watching your content, you really have gone above and beyond in what you do, and the impact you have had on my life has been one that I can only really describe as fundamental. So, from the bottom of my heart, thank you for doing what you do, and I cannot wait for more.
Edit: after finally getting to the end of the video, I think Red summed up why I adore OSP in the first place. Over the 7 years I’ve been watching this channel, the impact you guys had on me really is incredible. You guys got me into history, writing, literature, and teaching more about the mythology I love. And all of it is exactly because you talk about what you’re passionate about. OSP is the reason I major in History, the reason why I adore Greek myth, the reason I love to write and tell stories, and so, for everything you have been passionate about, it was imprinted on me. So, thank you again for everything you’ve done 🥔

Many artists destroy their old art, in what I see as a ritual of self growth. Some do series of self portraits to cataloge their progress. Many can not move forward without a reconciliation. Creative people often do not find themselves on well-tread ground with the way forward obvious. Profound change demands profound courage; before or after... or during!

I just spent the entirety of this episode listening to it as i cleaned my apartment, which reminded me of how I would listen to your videos while working at the bakery i used to manage.
That was 9 years ago, the first video i ever watched of yours was Inferno, quickly followed by Purgatorio and Paradiso, and then binging through your whole backlog. I must have "watched" the videos you made in your first 6 years on TH-cam hundreds of times, as i would throw them on whenever i was alone in the bakery. And i was left alone a LOT during those 4 years.
I may not be as avid a viewer as i was back then, but every few months the algorithm will recommend one of your videos and I'll binge through everything i missed.
All this to say that, as a 30 year old Ace woman, your videos have brought me a lot of joy and comfort over the last 9 years, so thank you.

Red do NOT scare us with what sounded like a farewell for 10 minutes! I discovered this channel in March 2020, and devoured all the trope talks over the next week or so, and the weekly videos and biweekly (not that biweekly) podcasts have kept me grounded through nearly five extremely uncertain years of my life. As a late-20-something year old with ADHD symptoms, I recently also found out that trying harder never made me better at anything, it just made me frustrated and burnt out. What actually made me get better was having fun and sharing it with people I love. I can't tell you how relieved I am that you're still gonna be here making videos every other week, and I'm super excited to see whatever you decide to try next! Yours, forever a humble spud on all OSP content 🥔

I'm impressed Red: you not only compiled every greek myth video you made for the last decade, but then delivered a heartfelt and touching monologue on the nature of art and change. Here's to another great decade of rabbit holes and fun videos! As for new ideas, maybe you could cross over with your other work. For example: 1)Animate your favorite moments from Rolling with Difficulty or Heart of Elynthi. There's certainly been some fun moments, like when VR-LA was shunted out of Sigil and flew out of the ship. 2)Make a starter guide for Aurora. I've been loving the comic, but I can see how a new reader might be intimidated so a short primer video could be fun. Plus you get to gush over the world you made for a bit, which is always nice. Whatever you decide to do, I'll be right here watching and laughing along!🥔

2:06:53 This entire section is something I desperately needed to hear. I've been struggling a lot with my motivation and attention over the last few years, with unmedicated ADHD making things incredibly tough for me. I have been working through these things in therapy, but I still struggle.
And I think it's exactly this concept of "just applying yourself harder" that is burned into the minds of pretty much everyone living in this capitalistic hellscape that fills me with so much Dread and Anxiety. Everyone else can do it, so why can't I? I HAVE done things in the past, I can keep my attention on things, so why not on the things I "need" to do?
Realizing that there is simply no way to force yourself to do things is incredibly terrifying, especially when you are trying to succeed in studying for a course that you realized midway through just can't keep your attention... It's scary. It feels like you are letting everyone down, including yourself.
I don't know what the solution is, except for recognizing the things that push you forward, the things that motivate you, the things that you can do.
Either way, it's so helpful to know I'm not the only one with this struggle, and I'm so glad that you shared this! I'm certain that whatever your next thing is, it's going to be great!

Damn, yeah. I've been struggling lately trying to manage what I'm just gonna say is ADHD (I don't have a diagnosis, since despite a lifetime of symptoms and years of pestering medical folks to get me evaluated, I haven't gotten evaluated), because as I take up more responsibilities, it feels like I'm getting washed out to sea, like I can't keep up with anything. I'm just so overloaded and burned out all the time now. Acknowledging and letting go of the things I can't do well is a big challenge for me. But I'm working on accepting it right now, and on learning when to let go and when to actually push myself (I'm also simultaneously figuring out when to push myself and when to leave it with the million things that give me anxiety, so that's a fun double whammy). It's nice to know I'm not alone in the struggle.

i'm glad you brought up your singing, b/c it is really beautiful, and my gf and i have both expressed on separate occasions how we would genuinely buy a Red OSP cover album that has full, or hell, even half versions of the songs you've done as video outros. they really add a wonderful charm, and genuinely might be one of the things that struck me most when i first found the channel, all those years ago. and honestly, the way you present myth, folklore and cultural analysis via trope talks, summaries, etc. is probably the biggest influence on me becoming an anthropologist. well, this channel and playing pokemon diamond for the first time when i was 8 and thinking that Cynthia, a scholar of mythology, had the coolest job ever. anyway, i hope that your artistic journey continues to be stimulating, both intellectually and emotionally, and i hope that you have a wonderful rest of your week🥔

So, besides being an omnibus of some of Reds best hits, a mythological timeline, and a kind of family tree of stories, it's also a rather rad exploration and rewind of Red's growing and changing style of art, production, and script writing all done in a 2 and a quarter hour block.
To grown found family of OSP, I thank yall for 10 years of production and education. It's been awesome, seriously, and I can't believe I found ya'll from a cameo on Extra Credit.

I'm really glad you included that "self-indulgent" part at the end. It's so nice to see that you have discovered more about yourself, and are likely moving on to new things and finding ways to work with yourself better. Hearing what a content creator that I have watched and appreciated for around 6 years has been struggling with is honestly really inspiring.
I am currently in my first year of an online game development course, struggling to keep up and to stay motivated. I think that making games is what I want to do with my life, but I have a hard time convincing myself to do ANYTHING productive. I hope that I can find my groove soon and learn to work with myself better, the way that you have.
Progress has been slow, but I know that I will get there.

But if you've evolved past those and they just don't motivate you anymore, that's fine. By now I'm also absorbed in Blue's neverending Venice simping, and I'd like to see how Journey To The West actually ends one day 😛so you just keep on trucking in the way that works for you, and I'll see you in the next one. 🥔

Man, that final speech... that hit. I am now about the same age Red was when Red Eyes Take Warning, a youtube channel about summarizing Shakespeare plays using movie footage, became Overly Sarcastic Productions. I've already felt the feeling of "Oh it hurts" many times about my older projects, because I've been writing and doing various video-related tasks for about as long as I can remember. It hurts me to look at my older projects, and it hurts me to look at my current projects compared to the people I aspire to. I hear Red talk about how when she was going off to college, she was like "this is a baby YT channel, it only has like 300 fans" meanwhile I'm over here averaging 10-20 views on a video and 1-2, 3 if I'm lucky, chatters on most streams. Yet I can look back at the older works and be okay with them, because even though they hurt me to look at, I'm still growing, and I certainly don't have the lifetime of experience that Red already had with drawing when she was my age. 🥔

Now though, I don't feel as panicked about whether or not I can do it. All I feel is that I may as well do what I can and see how far that takes me.
I guess what I'm saying is, thanks. Hearing those thoughts of yours helped me get out of my head and look at the problem before me with a more balanced perspective.

Damn, it's been over 8 years already? That's crazy!
These miscellaneous myth videos had always been my favourites. They not only encouraged me to learn more about mythology, but motivated me to write and draw more too.
Hell, I don't think I would've started my MA by Research without the inspiration on this channel. The deep-dive on Dionysus was almost so interesting in of itself it basically got me to do more research and write myself, turn that research into an MA thesis and pass that very difficult hurdle.
And that's not even talking about seeing the improvement in Red's art, and finding the motivation to get better at it myself.
But it's also wild to see just how much more OSP content there is now.
Between Red's Trope Talks and wild tangents, Blue's expansion from just talking about country histories and empires to historical figures, architecture and linguistics, the detail diatribes and the OSPod,there's so many ways the channel can go. Can't wait to see it!

I am going to start grad school in two months and this video made me reflect on how much I’ve grown and how this channel has been here for me during the hardest parts of my life (transitioning from high school to college, moving out on my own for the first time, coming out as a queer person) and it made me quite emotional. I just wanted to say thank you. I can’t quite articulate how much your content means to me. It’s very often my go-to when I’ve had a long day or just wanna smile. I’ve seen all my favorite videos no less than a dozen times and they never ever get old.

The beginning of this video really evoked those "sit by the fire and let me tell you a story". Which yes that is the visual narrative device that Red talks have always had... but this truly felt as if it were a timeless epic and something that will stick with me for years to come. The sprinkles of narrator adding to the story really sells this as one of the best videos you've ever put together.
Though I'm not as self driven or artistic as you. I've found myself in a rut in my late 20's where life isn't turning out like I'd hoped and I've been trying to tread old ground from my past finding nothing that drives me from there. Hearing you speak and indulge your thoughts at the end was theraputic for me, and I'm so glad you included it.

I get the stagnation thing, after a while even doing something enjoyable will become draining if you don’t feel you’re getting better at it. Like with video games, once you know where all the items are and the solutions to all the puzzles and/or can defeat once challenging opponents with ease, the drive to keep playing kind of goes away. It’s not you stopped liking the gameplay loop or the characters or the mechanics, it’s just become more of a chore to get to your favorite bits rather then the whole experience. I think that’s what speed runs and challenge runs exist, to further push yourself while doing something you already enjoy, to obtain that same fulfillment you had before. Idk if that’s exactly the same haha. I do really enjoy all your guy’s videos, especially the mythology and trope stuff and hope to continue to see more. It’s amazing to see your progress and I’m inspired by seeing both of your guy’s progress and growth throughout the years. Thanks for continuing to improve and making quality content. Never force doing creative stuff out of a feeling of obligation, that's a surefire way to make you resent it. If myths in a vacuum aren't doing it for you, then let them rest. Besides a lot of the time I find your videos about gods and putting them in a proper cultural/historical/syncretic context more interesting than just "Aphrodite got mad jealous one time". Drawing the dots between her and Ishtar was one of those little plot twists that stick with me. I unfortunately lack any literary tangents you can really sink your teeth into, but hope whatever you take a bite of does the trick.🥔

It hit me around the start of my mid-30s that I wasn't excited by any video games the way I used to. That movies didn't scratch the itch, and that I'd just gotten used to watching or listening to videos about history, science, and mythology rather than investing in stories on various media. And I was writing again. A lot. When you encounter tropes over and over again, especially the famous heroes journey, you eventually realize that the surprise isn't there like it used to. If it's done well, it can still grab you, but otherwise it's time to build something for someone else instead of just engaging in other folk's worlds.
I'll miss the small myths you summarize so well, but I'm excited to see what happens now that you're "there" for the deep dives and building worlds for others. I'm also excited for whatever comes after that.
Whatever you do though, don't just push on through if it's hurting you. You've more than earned the right to sit, breathe, and zen for a moment to find your next steps in the world.

It's been incredible to watch this channel and learn so much, it made me realise that i hated school, not learning, and even then, i was motivated to study writing at college because of your trope talks and deep dives!
So thanks, red (and blue - congrats on the book, cant wait to read it), for being a constant figure in my life all these years

i don’t really leave comments but the last part of this video really hit me. ive felt lost especially in my artistic career, graduating into an industry that seems like it has no place for me in it and trying to juggle improving my art and just- surviving. i didn’t know why i would find the things that i loved, still do love, to be so hard to make or why my motivation would hit rock bottom when i wanted to do so much (executive dysfunction is a beast 😔)
ive heard similar things from peers and friends but, the way you talked about it in this video hit me harder than i ever expected.
thank you for this channel, and your stories 🥔

It's strange how much time has really passed since those first osp videos about Greek Mythology. You've done a lovely job OSP, and I really look forward to watching this video in its entirety. ❤

OSP, I’ve been watching your channel since 2016. It’s been an absolute blast watching your videos change and grow over the years. You’ve even helped me through some tough times back in college, for which I am immensely grateful. Thank you so much for all the fun and joy you’ve spread with the channel! Here’s to ten more years of creativity, laughs, and insight into cultures gone by!

If this means we'll be having more longer videos but at a lesser frequency, SIGN ME UP. I low-key get sad when the shorter myth videos end because, well, they end too fast.
Good luck with whatever new thing you bring the channel next, Red!

It's beautiful to truly be able to visualize your personal growth and the accomplishment of your goals like this, I cannot explain in words how much I resonated with your listing of different desires and how this channel was a catalyst for those changes to happen for you, as well as a chronicle of the deeds themselves. Your line of not being a coward really hit me where it hurts and I want it to motivate me to start working on those same bucket list life goals for artistry and broadening horizons in the world of creation instead of focusing on the day to day, being an artist has been a life long dream never fully realized due to real life complications, but this catalogue of your hard work stirs me, I hope enough to pick up my pen and paper again. Thank you Red. 🥔

Im not very good at reading old stories, or long history texts. I never have been. But, your myth videos have helped me understand. Your journey to the west episodes got me into lego monkie kid, which lead to meeting one of my close friends. Your hero videos, Greek and otherwise, help me just, process the world. Thank you red. 🥔

🥔 Ovid's Metamorphoses is my favorite epic just because of how interesting it is to have someone try to distill pretty much all of Greco-Roman mythology into a single work. Now I have another more focused summary on the heroes specifically. Wonderful. Great work as always Red. Whatever you enjoy and are inspired to create will doubtless be a joy to watch.

The exact time period that Midas is supposed to have lived in is not terribly consistent across mythology. Sure, he supposedly founded Gordium, but he was also said to be the king of Pessinus, a city that emerged in the 5th century BCE.
I personally lean towards the read of Midas being from the Iron Age on basis of Homer never mentioned him (which would make sense if they were contemporaries, or if Homer was actually older than Midas), plus it makes it easier to fit Dionysus, who plays a major role in Midas' story, into the mythological timeline.

Won’t lie and say that the misc myths aren’t my favorite part of the channel (though I watch everything) but I will say that I am absolutely willing to wait literal years for the next one if it means getting something you enjoyed making over something you felt obligated to make 🥔

You guys are one of the few things still with me since a very tumultuous time in my life. It's so good to see all of you improve in your craft while staying the same person. Thank you for the past 8 years.

That end of the video really hit me especially now that I'm making my own creative journey making videos and getting better at art. OSP is one of my biggest inspirations, so seeing the approach of valuing improvement is a good reminder to myself why I'm an artist in the first place. Thank you for the many years of entertaining videos and never stop working those mad skills. 🥔❤💙

🥔 I really did appreciate the artist reflection at the end. I think you are well within a new season of your art, your interests, and certainly your life. Thanks for letting us watch it unfold. The first video I saw from you (and this channel) was your King Arthur summary. I loved it. You have come so far even since then! Can't wait to see where you go from here.

I just want to say *thank you* for what you do here. I've been watching this channel for almost five years now, and these videos have and are continuing to get me through the hardest times in my life. Even when it's really bad, I can throw on trope talks and ignore the world for a bit, and that's absolutely invaluable to me. So, thank you, and all hail the spuds 🥔

You have no idea how validating it is to hear another artist go through the same things that have hit me and my brain, in particular an artist I so dramatically respect and who is so successful (and who is the SAME AGE as me, seriously, that's wild, I think we're at most a couple years apart). I'm glad you've figured out what motivates and demotivates you and that you seem to know how to move forward while continuing to challenge yourself and keep yourself entertained in your work. I'm still working on that one myself in a lot of regards, but you've definitely given me some ideas. 🥔

Red being defined by a single attribute namely her epic hair that presumably engulfed three-quarters of her body and was probably used by her as a pillow involved a lot more elbow (or hair) grease than any research it took to explain the heroes of Greece.

    Thanks for the compilation.
I've been following your channel from the very beginning when I was looking for a fun summary of hamlet to share with my classmates all the way through the more recent compilations.
Every week, I look forward to seeing you and Blue introduce me to something new or guide me on a deep dive into a topic that I have a surface level understanding of. You have been a way for me to relax after classes or work and a distraction from stress for a decade.
    Thanks for everything 🥔

Your little journey speech at the end of the video hits hard for me, because honestly I’ve kinda also been dealing with something similar. For the past 4 years now I’ve been working on my own little fantasy series, having hope for what it can be, and yet every time I try to properly want to work on it, I feel like a mortal man staring down a living mountain. Your trope talk videos have helped me understand a lot of the tropes and how to best subvert and even nail them down in my head, but for me that isn’t the part that frightens me because frankly I’ve always been a fairly good writer, but it’s the mountain that I’ve built up in my head, and the fear of it not being good enough. But as of recently, and actually this October thanks to me doing my own version of inktober, I’m making a new world with the drawing, new fantasy creatures and people that are different to my original series, and honestly as I’m typing this out, it’s really giving me a simple thought that honestly hurts but is something that I may need to do, and that’s step back from the mountain, but always have it in sight. I’ve been so focused on it that I’ve failed to look towards anything smaller, and I think that’s something I should really do. The mountain is always going to be there, in my mind and in my heart, but I need to take another path away from it, because if I let it’s shadow bow down apron me with fear, I’ll never climb it, and if I never learn how to properly climb it, that it won’t ever be conquered. What I need to do is learn from this, and not be afraid. Be bold and brave, but that doesn’t mean I can’t be afraid. Bravery is the act of fighting though fear despite how overcoming it is. And all I need to do is be brave
Thanks red, this message is more so a self reflection but I don’t know if I’d ever have it without the video, but thank you for giving me an opportunity to do so… via your own self reflection on your last 10 years… yeah🥔

Red, I just want to say that I really enjoy all your videos. Myths, legends, tropes, random videos about eclipses because you went to see two and absolutely couldn’t resist sharing… While I look forward to your continued exploration of tropes, mythology deep dives and detailed diatribes with Blue I also really look forward to seeing what new things you choose to explore next. Thank you for sharing and I look forward to seeing you continue to grow and thrive.

What a wonderful summary at the end. I almost skipped this one since I know each component video, but watching this (while working on a creative project pushing my own limits no less, and in the middle of trying to make a major life decision) was the right thing to do. Thanks so much for this. 🥔
For what it's worth, as an audience member, I will be happy to see more focus on your other and potentially new series, with this returning when you really, really feel it. The deep dives in particular feel like a direct evolution, reflecting your growing ability to seek out complex sources and academic discourse and reflect them into your material honestly. There's nothing I enjoy more than learning _how_ we know what we know about these old stories.
Thanks you for many years of being you and sharing with us.

I have been subscribed to this channel since my junior year of high school 7 years ago. I love seeing you art improve and your content change while still liking your old stuff. Your art has inspired me to go back into school and into a major I wanted to do instead of a major my parents think I wanted. I graduate next month, and I want to thank you for your and blues videos getting me out of those art block and sorta life blocks.

I didn’t work out the undefined dread I was carrying, Red, until you said you were still having fun with “Journey To The West”. ::massive exhale::
So many artists and writers held strong through the pandemic and found themselves exhausted in the last 18 months. I understand that you’re talking about an entirely different process, a joyful progression on a longer timescale, but it was briefly panic-inducing :).
Thank you (and Blue), always, for the insight you’re willing to give us into your creative development. It reminds me to stop and ask, “Why are you doing what you’re doing? Do you need to course correct?” 🥔
