I need to lock my doors before I focus on this video, lest I end up a forensics file in a documentary.

Can someone answer simple question? Let's say I have properly licensed my server (Hyper-V host) with Windows server 2019 Datacenter. I plan to run couple of Windows server 2019 standard VMs on it. Do I need to buy licenses to activate VMs?????????? Or will they activate automatically??

Hi Sir, thanks for the info. I have a question here, I'm running Windows Server 2016 Datacenter on my physical server, is it legal to run Windows Server 2016 VMs onto that server?

great info, However I believe its not accurate.
For standard edition additional VMs/OSEs can be added in increments of 2 VMs/OSEs by re-licensing the total number of cores in the Server.
    for eg.
in a physical server, 16 physical cores in total and 6 VMs you will need 48 core licenses
16 core license for 16 physical cores (2 VMs included),
16 core license for additional 2 VMs,
16 core license for additional 2 VMs
please correct me if im wrong.
    cheers,

Your calculation is correct. We will have a requirement of 48 cores which can come in 2 core and 16 core packs.
      Now let's look at the formula ( 16/2) * (6/2)
= 24 * 2 core packs => A total requirement of 48 cores. If you see the video at 4:11 , the guy does talk about it.

Great Video. So if my VMware host has 2 16-core processors. How many Windows Server 2022 Standard licenses would I need for 4VMs? I calculated 2 16-core packs. Reasoning. Each 16-core standard pack comes with permission for 1 physical server and 2 VMs. Is this correct?

I have one user with 2 CPU 4 CORE physical 2019 STANDARD server activated using MAK , and wants 2 instances of VMs to be activated on hyper-v without increase in activate count , I suggested for core license but I am not very clear how it works or how the VMs would get activates automatically through MAK on physical server

If our host/esxi box is licensed for windows datacenter 2016, can we buy 8 cores of windows server standard 2022 for a VM on that host?

Hi, How about license for the Server OS use inside two VM of windows server 2019 standard? Do I need additional license for those two Server OS inside VMs?

Assuming that the core sizing thing is accounted for, a Standard license licenses the host, not the VMs. The license is assigned to the machine, not to the VMs. The license gives you the right to run up to two instances of WS. If one of those is on the physical host, only one can be a VM. If the physical uses only the Hyper-V role, then you may have two VM instances.
If you want more WS instances, you can enable them two at a time by assigning additional licenses to the host.
The VM limitation applies only to instances of WS. You can have unlimited VMs containing other, properly licensed OSes. (Such as Linux.)

    • @FernandoAMVs
      @FernandoAMVs 3 ปีที่แล้ว

Windows Server licenses are for the physical server, so you will calculate it based on its core qty (following the rules). In the Datacenter edition you don't have to worry about the number of VMs

@@FernandoAMVs thank you I did correct apparently I have two 16 core license on 28 core server, but for some reason of I'm not able to clone the license to number of vm's it comes unlicensed each time I copy VM. Is there any unique way to use this type of license ? I just type it to the first VM and and tried to clone

Assuming you have no more than 16 cores in host, you can make unlimited Windows Server VMs on that host, assigning cores as you see fit...
