    Choice of Virtualization
    00:13 The first point to understand with virtualization is that the type of virtualization solution that you use does not affect the licensing of the virtual machine. Microsoft licenses virtual machines independent of the virtualization solution that is used. For example, the administrator could use Hyper-V or another vendor like VMWare or VirtualBox.

    Licensing Datacenter Edition
    00:50 If you purchase the Datacenter edition of Windows Server the administrator is free to run an unlimited number of virtual machines running Datacenter. If they run a different edition of Windows Server they will need to purchase additional licenses for those editions. Datacenter has all the features that Windows Server has to offer so the administrator, in most cases, should not have a need to run any other version of Windows. In order to get the best value out of Datacenter a computer needs to be purchased that has a lot of RAM and CPU’s in it. This means that Datacenter is generally an expensive option.
    Licensing Standard Edition
    01:50 When you purchase Windows Server Standard edition you have the right to run 2 virtual machines running Windows Server. You are free to run any virtualization solution that you wish. If you choose to run Hyper-V virtualization solution you are limited to only being able to use the physical server to run the visualization solution. This essentially means that you can only install the Hyper-V role on the server. You are not able to install any additional roles or use the server for any other tasks like file sharing.
    Licensing Essentials/MultiPoint Edition
    02:48 If you are running Windows Server Essentials or Multipoint Editions then the license gives you the choice of two options. You are able to install it on a physical machine or a virtual machine. You are not able to install it on a physical machine and then install the Hyper-V role and run a virtual machine. It is either one or the other.
    Windows Server 2012 R2 Hyper-V
    03:20 This edition is a free edition from Microsoft. This edition is essentially Windows Server with only the Hyper-V role and basic administration functionality. It runs the core interface so it uses less resources than the full interface. Additional resources for CPU, memory and disk space are also saved because, since the editions have only the Hyper-V role, it has less software. This makes it more secure as there is less of a footprint that an attacker could potentially use. The administrator is able to join the server to the domain to manage it like any other server. However, if the administrator finds that they need more functionality later on they are not able to upgrade the install to Windows Server. They will instead need to perform a reinstall.

    So i'm confused...if i buy Server 2012 R2 Standard can i install it physically on one server and then run 2 instances in my vSphere cloud? The video made it seem like the 2 vm instances could only be run on the physical server the main license was installed on.

    • @itfreetraining
      @itfreetraining  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +kf7tkj The license is tied to a physical server. You however you can move a volume license and it’s virtualisation rights once every 90 days. So if you want to move it from one physical server running Vmware to another you will need to wait 90 days between moves.

    i have one question. suppose i have server 2012R2 Standard installed on my physical machine having 2 physical processor having 2x6=12core. As we know standard support only 2 virtual instance . Can i install more than 2 virtual machines if i share 2 core for each vm's ??

    • @itfreetraining
      @itfreetraining  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Standard edition enables you to run up to two virtual instances of Windows Server with each license and provides all the same features as Datacenter edition. The licensing for Standard edition based on the processor plus CAL, with each license covering up to two physical processors on a single server, just like Datacenter edition.

    ITFreeTraining is great. However I have a doubt. For example: I Install Server 2012 Datacenter Edition on a physical server and, running 8 instances of virtual machines. In every VM I want to install Server 2012 Datacenter Edition. What I don't understand if I have to buy the license for every copy of Windows Server 2012 Datacenter Edition or not?

    • @itfreetraining
      @itfreetraining  8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      You do not have to purchase more than 1 license for one physical machine and unlimited virtual machines. You would simply use the Datacenter key that you used for the physical installation, for every virtual machine installation. Just install Datacenter on the physical host, then spin up every virtual machine using the same Datacenter installation ISO then use the Datacenter key in every VM.

    We can install 2 vm on windows server 2012 enterprise edition and
    unlimited vm on windows server 2012 datacenter. What about windows 8?
    Please help.

      Refer to your Windows license for this one. For example for Windows 10 Retail.
      www.microsoft.com/en-us/Useterms/Retail/Windows/10/UseTerms_Retail_Windows_10_English.htm
      Refer to
      d(iv) Use in a virtualized environment. This license allows you to install only one instance of the software for use on one device, whether that device is physical or virtual. If you want to use the software on more than one virtual device, you must obtain a separate license for each instance
      So Windows clients you get one install, regardless whether it is physical or virtual.

    If i want to deploy 5 VMs on a physical server, my only option is Data Center License?
    Can i use 3 Standard Edition Licenses or it isn't possible?
    You said that with the Standard license i get the host which can only run Hyper-V role and 2 VMs.
    (So my 2 out 5 VMs are deployed, 3 more to go)
    Is it possible to get 2 more Standard licenses and be able to run 6 VMs in total?
    (So my 5 VMs are deployed, and i have one extra one for later use)

      It is possible to use several licenses to license your virtual servers aside from dishing out the nearly $7,000 required for a Data Center license.

    I'm not sure what the point would be to choose server 2012 standard if you can only have 2 standard windows server vms on it. You'd be paying for 3 licences that way, and using the free server 2012 r2 hyper-v hypervisor means you can use more than 2 windows server vms on top. You mention possibly needing features later since the free 2012 hyper-v is limited, but wouldn't I just want to add and use those features on the vms instead of the hypervisor itself?

    • @itfreetraining
      @itfreetraining  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Anthony Ghouri I am not sure what you mean.
      If you install Windows Server 2012 Standard on a physical server, you can run a single physical machine with that license.
      If you install Windows Server Standard on a physical machine and only install the Hyper-V feature, you can run 2 virtual Windows Server virtual machines.
      What Microsoft is doing is allowing you to choose your virtual machine software. For example, you could install VMWare. If you do this, for every Windows Server 2012 license you could purchase you can run 2 virtual machines on that VMWare server running Windows Server 2012 Standard.
      So physical, you get one installs.
      Go virtual, you get two installs.
      Or to put in another way, If you are running two virtual machines running Windows Server 2012 you get Windows Server 2012 Hyper-V for free. The only point to remember, if you use Windows Server Hyper-V, you will not be able to add any additional features unless you purchase a license for it. The idea being, that the server is only providing virtual machine services.

    • @plushy1emily
      @plushy1emily 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +itfreetraining I didn't know that if you used vmware as the hypervisor, you could only make two server 2012 standard vms per license on top of vmware. I assumed that there wouldn't be a limit. So does that mean that limit of 2 vms per license also applies on top of serve Hyper-v and citrix xen server?

    • @itfreetraining
      @itfreetraining  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +NoMan's Land It is a license limitation. Say you want to run 4 virtual machines with Windows Server 2012 you would buy 2 licenses. If you wanted to run 10 virtual machines, you would buy 5 licensees.

    • @itfreetraining
      @itfreetraining  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Anthony Ghouri This that is correct for Windows Server Standard. If you are running Windows Server Datacenter there is no limit to how many virtual machines you can run.

    little bit confused: If I install an Win Server 2012 R2 Hyper-V, can I install as many VMs as I want, as long I buy the license?

    • @itfreetraining
      @itfreetraining  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Lucas Johannes Albrecht No, depending on the license you either get 1, 2, or unlimited virtual machines. Essentials, Standard and Datacenter respectively.

    • @batmanthe
      @batmanthe 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      He included the caveat "as long as I buy the license". So this response appears misleading. Two is what you 'get'. But you can run a lot of VMs at once on R2 Standard. And you can do it above-board as long as 3rd,4th,5th.. VMs have licenses or are free OSs.

    • @itfreetraining
      @itfreetraining  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      You are correct. Your Windows Server license provides you with the ability to run either 1, 2, or Unlimited Windows Virtual machines. You can run whatever other virtual machines you like.

    • @itfreetraining
      @itfreetraining  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I will rephrase. I think I know where the confusion is. You can run whatever virtual machine solution you like as long as it is only used to run virtual machines, not roles like file and printing etc. Each standard Server 2012 R2 license you purchase allows 2 virtual machines to be run on that physical server. So if you want to run 20, you would purchase 10 licenses. So you can run as many VM's as you want as long as you have the licenses.
