I do think that Moon's forced messages were what caused the rot in Five Pebbles. Based on how hard it is to rewrite your taboos and how unpleasant it is to receive these forced messages, it's like trying to perform brain surgery on yourself while getting electric shocks right into your arms. This was a very delicate and lengthy procedure that required as much focus as possible, and these messages completely made his focus slip and let things get out of hand. With the procedure failing spectacularly, it's likely that the genomes meant to overwrite only the taboo has now been set to overwrite everything into more of itself, which is why they only eat and eat, only being stopped after enough damage has been given to them.

Regarding the, "Father, Mother, Spouse," thing, it's pretty easy to understand it. When an ancient dies a normal death they'll return due to the endless cycle of life and death that they're trapped in. When they die, they're born again in a new body while retaining the memories of their previous life. I doubt each body is of the same gender, and assuming that to be the case it is no surprise that they would(despite their memories of once being a man or woman) procreate, resulting in the titles of, "Father, Mother, Spouse." The ancients being asexual might not be entirely false, but considering the imagery of a certain piece of grafitti at the end of FP on top of the natural urge of procreation being a thing, I'm quite confident that the ancients simply made do with the tools at their disposal.
It's interesting to think about how reincarnation works in this universe. IRL, it... well, it doesn't, there's only the implication that, whatever counts as your soul, carries some memory from previous lives, but not that you get to remember it consciously. Here, it seems to be more palpable. But how vivid those memories were (or to whom, or to what, if it depended on what kind of being had the experience), how much real time elapsed between lives, and even questions of conservation of matter (does a being reconstitute whole on reincarnation, as Slugcat seems to?), or time it self (is Slugcat, and by extension everything else, in a grand overlapping Groundhog Day loop?), remain unanswered. Of course, the lore provides no clues for these, so we are left to ponder; which, I might argue is the real point, to leave it intentionally ambiguous. While that does save the effort of detailing every aspect of the universe, it also leaves one asking exactly these questions. So, regarding this particular quote, it could be an analogy, i.e. a list of cultural responsibilities; or it could be real personal relationships; or it could be "based" self identity, or shared (via reincarnation) life experiences. Maybe a bit of each all at once; it's just all part of the mystery that is Rain World lore.
My personal theory on this is that reincarnation acts like the game except via death by old age and presumably disease. It would explain why there’s an entire paragraph or disease in the farmers arrays pearl, and it just makes sense logically if an ancient were to die from old age, they would come back still old so we can assume in that case they’re born into a new body, same thing with disease. I’m going to put the fact that the enemies reset whenever you die to them, having a pretty similar patrol pattern every cycle, and the fact that you get your items back when you die to basics quality of life improvements Admittedly, this is just a crockpot theory of mine
It could also just be referring to “mothering” and “fathering” as different forms of parental roles perhaps? “The Mother” passage can be granted to any slugcat, seemingly regardless of gender, so perhaps “mothering” in this context is caring for children.

If mothering is simply about nurturing children, then there wouldn't necessarily need to be a father role among the ancients as fathers too take part in nurturing children, which is exactly what mothering is about. I suppose the argument could be made that the father title would be for the person who provides and protects, but the way I see it, the ideal family dynamic would consist of both the mother and the father taking equal part in nurturing, providing, and protecting. The issue is that the providing and protecting roles aren't needed in Ancient society as it is the iterators that provide for and protect the Ancients and their cities. Once everything has become automated, all that's left is nurturing, which if it was exclusive to mothering, would then remove the need for the title of father. You are definitely right about the passage being related to the nurturing of children rather than actual mothering, but I believe that the title of father for the Ancients exists same as it does for humans or any other living being, simply being the father of a child and the male counterpart of the two parents. There could be something I'm missing, but this is all my brain can manage while sleep deprived. I've been playing way too much Armored Core lately.
I assume when Moon says you can create power using a vacuum when talking about void fluid she is saying that a turbine or similar can be run off a vacuum. If you put void fluid and rock in a sealed box with the only outlet as a turbine, the rock would be (in this lore) fully removed from existence, pulling air in through the turbine and making power.
Not just the rock, but the air itself would be slowly removed, which would suck in more air. It's likely that the vacuum chambers just spun turbines using the inrush of air over time until the void fluid lost potency.

The pearl that talks about masks tickles me towards vultures and how they become aggressive when you steal their mask. With all the information I've got, it seems to me the Creators and/or the Iterators made the eco-system below the cans to be naturally self sustaining-it was their entertainment, industry, and food source. So Vultures likely served a purpose. The Vultures do not kill with their bites when masked, and 100% kill when unmasked. So the Ancients had a reason to bring live creatures from the surface up to wherever the Vultures nest. If I had to totally head canon it, the Vultures are not sentient and simply carrying out their purpose-they likely snatch creatures and deposit them in some sort of (long defunct) biological recycling system that once served an industrial purpose, such as creating fertilizer for the farm arrays-and it is possible their wing emissions serve some function for agriculture/industry-and in return their unique physiology, which is something of a machine and something of a living being, is replenished-they might get refueled like an aircraft or have their mechanical parts repaired, or have their masks replaced or upgraded. Their masks in this regard are gifts, an important part of their life cycle-it sets them onto their designated labor after whatever childhood they have, if any. An unmasked Vulture is seen as a threat-a purposed organism that has broken its programming, and every Vulture feels an innate need to correct the error.

I'm fairly sure the vacuum referenced by the Teal Pearl is just that, a physical vacuum. If I had to guess I'd assume that when the void liquid passively dissolves a solid the resulting mass is either an equivalent quantity of void liquid, but the void liquid is more dense than the solid, or the solid leaves existence. Either way a vacuum is created where there is lower air pressure, and since this incites air particles to move and equalize pressure, that air could be used to turn a turbine and generate power. This also implies that void liquid has no gaseous form.
Notes I took while watching the pearl lore video: First like, 3 pearls not too note worthy Purple pearl Microbe strata seems to refer to the neuron flies meaning the neuron flies work like a gpu. Magenta pearl She says that primal fauna are few, implying that lizards in their great numbers are not primal fauna. My guess? Used to make screens. Same implication applies to centipedes too I guess, so… batteries? Wire? Maybe a descendant of something similar to the red wires we see in 5P Dark pink pearl I believe that the high number of titles here along with conflicting gender related terms is to show that they’ve lived several lives, some of which were as males, others as females and the listed ages are meant to show that they lived out those lives from birth to old age The word “spouse” implies they had marriages “Mother”, “father”, and ”pure braid heritage” imply (along with the usage of words like birth when describing the cycles) that the ancients reproduce sexually and recognize things like family (this kinda implies that they’re reincarnated through literal rebirth (or possibly hatch) as infants. While I think this game is an actual piece of art and one of the best games I've ever played, I will say I find it pretty sad that so much well-written and highly interesting lore/story is hidden away within tiny pearls in a MASSIVE, MASSIVE world. And each time you find one, you have to lug it allllll the way back to Moon. Thank God for mods, still I'll never understand why unlimited fast travel wasn't built in to vanilla rain world =____=
I’m not a physicist but I think the vacuum power works by exploiting a law that void fluid breaks, that being the conservation of energy. Void fluid allegedly completely removes matter from existence creating a vacuum. This kind of reaction could be used for motion in real life but the energy used to create the vacuum would be equal to if not lesser than the yielded energy. Void fluid however appears to create a vacuum with no energy needing to be input yielding a net positive. I theorise that the void fluid may simply break down and somehow “teleport” it into the atmosphere creating the dust moon describes. (Assuming that it isn’t just inexplicably infinite mass falling from the sky)
In practice this would be something like a infinite windmill allowing the ancients to have effectively infinite energy at their disposal. This paired with their cyclical immortality would lead to technological advancement the likes of which would be otherwise impossible. Any single ancient would likely have the wisdom and skill of several lifetimes which would only grow with global communication. Thus allowing them infinite time to learn and grow. (And to get mentally ill if their desperate suicidal motivations are anything to go by)

Regarding the, "Father, Mother, Spouse," thing, it's pretty easy to understand it.
When an ancient dies a normal death they'll return due to the endless cycle of life and death that they're trapped in. When they die, they're born again in a new body while retaining the memories of their previous life. I doubt each body is of the same gender, and assuming that to be the case it is no surprise that they would(despite their memories of once being a man or woman) procreate, resulting in the titles of, "Father, Mother, Spouse." The ancients being asexual might not be entirely false, but considering the imagery of a certain piece of grafitti at the end of FP on top of the natural urge of procreation being a thing, I'm quite confident that the ancients simply made do with the tools at their disposal.
It's interesting to think about how reincarnation works in this universe. IRL, it... well, it doesn't, there's only the implication that, whatever counts as your soul, carries some memory from previous lives, but not that you get to remember it consciously. Here, it seems to be more palpable. But how vivid those memories were (or to whom, or to what, if it depended on what kind of being had the experience), how much real time elapsed between lives, and even questions of conservation of matter (does a being reconstitute whole on reincarnation, as Slugcat seems to?), or time it self (is Slugcat, and by extension everything else, in a grand overlapping Groundhog Day loop?), remain unanswered.
Of course, the lore provides no clues for these, so we are left to ponder; which, I might argue is the real point, to leave it intentionally ambiguous. While that does save the effort of detailing every aspect of the universe, it also leaves one asking exactly these questions.
So, regarding this particular quote, it could be an analogy, i.e. a list of cultural responsibilities; or it could be real personal relationships; or it could be "based" self identity, or shared (via reincarnation) life experiences. Maybe a bit of each all at once; it's just all part of the mystery that is Rain World lore.
My personal theory on this is that reincarnation acts like the game except via death by old age and presumably disease. It would explain why there’s an entire paragraph or disease in the farmers arrays pearl, and it just makes sense logically if an ancient were to die from old age, they would come back still old so we can assume in that case they’re born into a new body, same thing with disease.
I’m going to put the fact that the enemies reset whenever you die to them, having a pretty similar patrol pattern every cycle, and the fact that you get your items back when you die to basics quality of life improvements

It could also just be referring to “mothering” and “fathering” as different forms of parental roles perhaps? “The Mother” passage can be granted to any slugcat, seemingly regardless of gender, so perhaps “mothering” in this context is caring for children.
@@TheScrombler That could be true as well, though I feel in the Ancients' case the parental roles would continue to be filled as normal whether they are gendered or not. If mothering is simply about nurturing children, then there wouldn't necessarily need to be a father role among the ancients as fathers too take part in nurturing children, which is exactly what mothering is about. I suppose the argument could be made that the father title would be for the person who provides and protects, but the way I see it, the ideal family dynamic would consist of both the mother and the father taking equal part in nurturing, providing, and protecting. The issue is that the providing and protecting roles aren't needed in Ancient society as it is the iterators that provide for and protect the Ancients and their cities. Once everything has become automated, all that's left is nurturing, which if it was exclusive to mothering, would then remove the need for the title of father.
You are definitely right about the passage being related to the nurturing of children rather than actual mothering, but I believe that the title of father for the Ancients exists same as it does for humans or any other living being, simply being the father of a child and the male counterpart of the two parents.

I assume when Moon says you can create power using a vacuum when talking about void fluid she is saying that a turbine or similar can be run off a vacuum. If you put void fluid and rock in a sealed box with the only outlet as a turbine, the rock would be (in this lore) fully removed from existence, pulling air in through the turbine and making power.
Not just the rock, but the air itself would be slowly removed, which would suck in more air. It's likely that the vacuum chambers just spun turbines using the inrush of air over time until the void fluid lost potency.

I think the pearl talking about nightmares of menacing stars is actually the ancient having dreams of the void sea, The millions of stars are the void worms. It seems that the void worms or void sea could send telepathic messages or premonitions or something if true
We also get the same dreams with glowing stars when first entering sub, it's almost certainly a premonition of the Void Sea with the stars being all the worms swimming around; the Ancients and probably everything in sub has that same dream.
The pearl that talks about masks tickles me towards vultures and how they become aggressive when you steal their mask. I wonder if there's a connection, are vultures products of that spiritual - industrial mess, are they more sentient than I assumed and parroting their creators, am I going insane waiting for Downpour to release?

With all the information I've got, it seems to me the Creators and/or the Iterators made the eco-system below the cans to be naturally self sustaining-it was their entertainment, industry, and food source. So Vultures likely served a purpose. The Vultures do not kill with their bites when masked, and 100% kill when unmasked. So the Ancients had a reason to bring live creatures from the surface up to wherever the Vultures nest.
If I had to totally head canon it, the Vultures are not sentient and simply carrying out their purpose-they likely snatch creatures and deposit them in some sort of (long defunct) biological recycling system that once served an industrial purpose, such as creating fertilizer for the farm arrays-and it is possible their wing emissions serve some function for agriculture/industry-and in return their unique physiology, which is something of a machine and something of a living being, is replenished-they might get refueled like an aircraft or have their mechanical parts repaired, or have their masks replaced or upgraded. Their masks in this regard are gifts, an important part of their life cycle-it sets them onto their designated labor after whatever childhood they have, if any.
An unmasked Vulture is seen as a threat-a purposed organism that has broken its programming, and every Vulture feels an innate need to correct the error.

I'm fairly sure the vacuum referenced by the Teal Pearl is just that, a physical vacuum. If I had to guess I'd assume that when the void liquid passively dissolves a solid the resulting mass is either an equivalent quantity of void liquid, but the void liquid is more dense than the solid, or the solid leaves existence. Either way a vacuum is created where there is lower air pressure, and since this incites air particles to move and equalize pressure, that air could be used to turn a turbine and generate power. This also implies that void liquid has no gaseous form.

I believe that the high number of titles here along with conflicting gender related terms is to show that they’ve lived several lives, some of which were as males, others as females and the listed ages are meant to show that they lived out those lives from birth to old age
The word “spouse” implies they had marriages
“Mother”, “father”, and ”pure braid heritage” imply (along with the usage of words like birth when describing the cycles) that the ancients reproduce sexually and recognize things like family
(this kinda implies that they’re reincarnated through literal rebirth (or possibly hatch) as infants. And that they track their family history across lives. This conflicts with what happens when you die in game and wake up where you slept last. Along which the fact that the cycle resets when you die, I feel like the slugcat dying is not an example of the death-rebirth cycle, but an actual game mechanic separate from the lore and you canonically don’t die once)

I can see how this is considered dying but also how it isn’t ascension either

The new design marries the weird creature beast of the original and iteratior puppet conventions remarkably well. I especially like the implied mandible.
I enjoy the vibes of the old thing but I definitely look forward to seeing more of this design. (Also the small touch of the pearls changing colour was appreciated)

While I think this game is an actual piece of art and one of the best games I've ever played, I will say I find it pretty sad that so much well-written and highly interesting lore/story is hidden away within tiny pearls in a MASSIVE, MASSIVE world. And each time you find one, you have to lug it allllll the way back to Moon. Thank God for mods, still I'll never understand why unlimited fast travel wasn't built in to vanilla rain world =____=
I’m not a physicist but I think the vacuum power works by exploiting a law that void fluid breaks, that being the conservation of energy. Void fluid allegedly completely removes matter from existence creating a vacuum. This kind of reaction could be used for motion in real life but the energy used to create the vacuum would be equal to if not lesser than the yielded energy. Void fluid however appears to create a vacuum with no energy needing to be input yielding a net positive.
I theorise that the void fluid may simply break down and somehow “teleport” it into the atmosphere creating the dust moon describes. (Assuming that it isn’t just inexplicably infinite mass falling from the sky)
In practice this would be something like a infinite windmill allowing the ancients to have effectively infinite energy at their disposal. This paired with their cyclical immortality would lead to technological advancement the likes of which would be otherwise impossible. Any single ancient would likely have the wisdom and skill of several lifetimes which would only grow with global communication. Thus allowing them infinite time to learn and grow. (And to get mentally ill if their desperate suicidal motivations are anything to go by)
Either way, the dust is heckin wierd and i have no clue what it could be bar “well the voided stuff has to go somewhere”
