I and I
In creation where one’s nature neither honors nor forgives
I and I
One says to the other, no man sees my face and lives

Highly under-rated song. True brilliance in every way.
What makes you believe it's underrated?
@@gogoyubari366 Never hear it played anywhere!

Dylan and Knoffler , what a great combination in this song

So true mate. Two legends.

R.I.P. Robbie Shakespeare. Bass legend.
Sly and Robbie?
Thumbs up for Robbie. R.I.P.

Cohen said to Dylan "How long did it take you to write 'I & I'?" - Dylan "15 minutes". Dylan said to Cohen "How long did it take you to write 'The Stranger Song'?" - Cohen " 7 years". I & I is one of Dylan's most beautiful lyrics. God speaks to Moses, Dylan sings of his lover in a b a b quatrains of mystery and beauty.
ain't that story about hallelujah and the answer was 2 years?
@@PedroAugusto-lv9gk You may be correct. The essence of the story is the same. I would be surprised if it was 'Hallelujah' because that song is so very derivative and perhaps even plagiarist. There are reports of Cohen 'plundering' the scriptures for inspiration. The rhyming of Hallelujah is very banal and grates on a fine ear. Read Thomas Chatterton and Shakespeare's sonnets for truly fine poetry.
@@lawrencewolfe-xavier Lets not take anything away from Leonard Cohen, if it took him 20 years to write one song,,,,,
@@d1973ld He was a good lyric metaphorist, despite his pretensions regarding rhyming for the word 'orange'!!
Criminaly underratet song from Mister Dylan 🇧🇻🇧🇻.
Mark Knophler 💙♥️
Intense in so many ways.....wonderful in so many ways....
Duality, irony, internal contradiction and tightrope-walking have been themes for Dylan starting from the beginning...
Possibly the most badass song ever written
In an ideal world songs like this one would be played on the radio always.
This is my favourite song from one of my favourite Dylan albums, Infidels. Bob Dylan's voice and Mark Knopfler's guitar fit so well together, too bad they didn't collaborate more. The lyrics are good enough to stand on its own and Dylan didn't get the Nobel prize in litterature for nothing.
A soulful tune by a soulful human being named Bob Dylan. He is just great.
Mark Knopfler on guitar - 2 legends !!!!
....don't forget Mick Taylor, no one plays better than him.

A song appreciated by Leonhard Cohen ❤
Bob nailed it on this one.
America's greatest poet.
Pure genius.
Said this before. A LOT of Dylan's 80's work is slept on. And that's depressing as he truly reinvented himself and adorned a new aesthetic. And you what he thought about people who didn't like him in the 80's? Fuck em'. This, Man of Peace and Jokerman are iconic songs.
Don't ever read Ian Bell's book(s) about him. He claims pretty much everything he did in the '80s AND the '90s was trash. Why did he bother writing all those pages when all he ever liked was Blood on the Tracks? He calls it his "masterpiece", but says Blonde on Blonde is "uneven" and "didn't quite work". This guy's BRAIN doesn't quite work. Myself, I think his masterpiece is whatever he is working on now. Lately, Rough and Rowdy Ways. BTW, Ian Bell says he "lost his voice" in the '80s.
I also love his paintings!
This is one of his best albumns
Totally agree Bro
@@ferociousgumby shame 2 hear that as I got his book 2 read ,if I knew that I wouldn't have got it.
Fabulous lyrics! And can we talk about Mark Knopflers outstanding guitar on this?
Its amazing how Mark speaks with his fingers. Macig
Plus Mick Taylor on the other guitar.
I love the opening guitar by Mark Knophler
Unbeliveble. Mark and Bob TOGETHER are so rigth. Fantastic 💙♥️
Nobody comes close to Bob
This is a masterpiece. The lyrics are so evocative and enigmatic that listening to it gives me the same feeling that I get when I stare at great art - something by Salvador Dali or Francis Bacon.
Great comment to a great song,a masterpiece of lyrics❤❤❤
one of his finest lyrics
This song is pure golden
I remember I was 17 pulling time in the pen in 82 got out in 83 and one of my best friends played the infidels album of dylan and I fell in love with it!! Union sundown and man of peace and I and I were the best songs of that era next to dire straights brothers in arms!! So built my first old school harley chopper and been loving my life every since!!🤘
I agree brother 100%.!!! I remember listening to-i and I years ago and it accured to me who was playing the guitar- Mark Knopfler!!! They worked so well together, Brilliant in fact…!!!👌
So you've been to prison got out, listend to Bob Dylan, built a chopper and life is grand.. cool story 😆

Genius of Bob Dylan shown in this song, lyrics and all..
Thank you Bob Dylan ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️🔥
I fucking LOVE this song. It’s my favourite ever song. Played it around 78,000 times and it NEVER tires on me. Thank you Bob. Love you Bob Dylan.
King Dylan and prince Mark Knophler must be so fucking goooooood👊🇧🇻
Versions with Tom Petty are best imo

It's one of my favorite songs, too!
Took an untrodden path once, where the swift don't win the race
It goes to the worthy, who can divide the word of truth
Took a stranger to teach me, to look into justice's beautiful face
And to see an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth
Brilliant. So many brilliant lines and imagery.
My favorite Dylan song, hands down. I LOVE YOU BOB DYLAN

Such imagery, only a words Smith like Bob Dylan could convey.
This song is lyrical pleasure.
He is phenomenal storyteller
He is not telling a story in this song, he is describing a very mystical feeling. Talking to god.
Tell me another artist ever that cud write a tune like this

The greatest poet of the 20th century
NO.
THAT WOULD BE BOB MARLEY 😊
@@barringtonedwards7008 Does not reach up to Dylan's ankles, no way!!
This is one of my favourite tunes by Bob Dylan, from one of my favourite albums by him, Infidels. This song is really beautiful, both musically and lyrically and it has the great Mark Knopfler on guitar on it as well.
The lyrics are usually interpreted as the ichotomy between Dylan's private and public selves. Until I became aware of that interpretation, I thought it was about the ichotomy between the coincious and the subcoincous parts of a persons psyche, told with a Rastafarian phrase. Only Dylan himself knows the right interpretation.
I have listened to this song many times. It soothens my nerves and it fills me with soul.
Bob Dylan has made many people's life more bearable than it would have been without him. I am one of these people.
"They’re waiting for spring to come, smoking down the track" - mind-blowing creative there..
one of his best no doubt, i cn repeat it again and again,, 😭😭😭my tears just run down my chicks
Magic song. Cry with your hole body. This one deserved it. Respekt norway 🇸🇯🇸🇯
Are you drunk?
being drunk aint an offence.sorry if offended, but every have a story to his life, please give me a chance to say what feel - minus your judgement 😮
This is simply the greatest piece of songwriting that has ever existed and ever will exist. There is a no way a mortal can write this.
I love it so much. There was some old rocker telling about going to meet Bob, and -- and this had nothing to do with his story, it was just describing what happened, He said he got into the car and told Bob, "I love "I and I." I'd been telling my son of the greatness of this song so when we heard this I looked over at him. I thought, 'now he'll listen to his old mother.' I
It's partly his complaint -- how she'd want to talk about 'whatever it was. ' That's what makes it great. imho
I bought this at 16 and still my favourite and most accessible Dylan. I was a dire straits fan and this was an awesome collaboration.
Agree. Was 18 when i first this monstersong. It blow me away. Bob n Mark
Another phenomenal experience in the music world of a true master. Bob Dylan has my heart ❤
Powerful beautiful song.
One of his finest pieces.
It is the Kind of song you hear in your soul when you are walking through an ugly alley at 3 am ... Perfection built upon Destany
Wow, imaginative imagery!
It's a choice to fall in love with anyone it's not a manipulation tactic it's a partnership if you've got my back I've got yours because they want to
I must say I didn’t listen to Dylan much in this period, but this is such a fine song song! I must revisit.
His best period imo
You should listen to more. Infidels and Empire Burlesque are 2 albums from that "unknown" Dylan era that are both brilliant.
One of his best 80s albums. Fer sure fer sure

Another great tune off that album, I think is Union Sundown. That's the real reason I bought the original album.....but THIS song is SO great in so many ways!
An enjoyable thought provoking song.

Awesome
Here's a poem: If I give my beauty inside to you, I have high expectations of your beauty too. I won't take any ugly deceptions of only what is sin. I value my beauty within. If this should ever happen, it has to be that way. I won't walk away in sorrow. I won't walk away in pain. I don't plan to regret what I do and agree to. I don't believe in revenge and never have. I don't live in the past. I'm not dying that way. I give because Iive. I won't expect any more or less from you, but the love in your heart must be alive and not be divided there. I don't want to take any evil that I refuse to bare. I know the differences. It's something that's a spiritual experience. That's why the hurt too, can also be extreme. You have to be ready and it's not something taken lightly to me. I need to know what's in your heart. If you wish I can hear it in a clean and refreshing new song. My heart has been with you all along. I don't want to ever leave you, but don't take what I say as wrong. Late

No man sees my face and lives my God
@@russthompson9080 It's a biblical quote, the Bible God says is to their followers. I and I, means me and god.
@@tomasramirez4985 But He said, "You cannot see My face; for no man shall see Me, and live." - Exodus 33:20
He would not have shown himself to his servant if the sight were such as to bring the desire of the beholder to an end, since the true sight of God consists in this, that the one who looks up to God never ceases in that desire. For he says, “You cannot see my face, for man cannot see me and live.” Scripture does not indicate that this causes the death of those who look, for how would the face of life ever be the cause of death to those who approach it? On the contrary, the divine is by its nature lifegiving. Yet it is the characteristic of the divine nature to transcend all characteristics. Therefore he who thinks God is something to be known does not have life, because he has turned from true being to what he considers by sense perception to have being. -.

What a beautiful song. It's so sensitive. Creative. Creation will never be gone. It just regenerates and is never ending. This world is all about mankind's experiences moment by moment, and we should be awakening to awareness. The pain in this world is but a moment in infinite time. Yes, the pain is real, but the greatest amazing moments can be made so much better. It's how you embrace it all, including the pain, but that's limited compared to what you can perceive as joy just being in the moment of knowing that you're alive at all. There's a big difference between merely Living each moment of your mind in a survival mode and Living each moment in the mode of really Living. When you do so, you don't think so much about the struggle, instead you think about the experience of each moment. Do you understand what I'm trying to explain? Anyone? VC
Yes I think I understand you. Dylan songs appeal to people who think deeply about things.

this is so fucking sick
"I shall not go down underground when they say death is coming round." "I shall fight, fight against the dying of the light." Dylan/Dylan.... I shall look up when my redemption comes near, allow my eyes to see and my ears to hear. I shall show my face to all of the redeemed. The darkness of veils I don't want because I want to be free. The veil has already been lifted in Revelation style as far as the eye can see if they ponder on it awhile. There's a train coming and I'll get on board, and only takes my tongue as the defining sword. I'm going down the road one of these days to see a shining face, and I want to see him stare right into my face. I'll look back into Him as He walks with Grace. No, I'm not going down like that because I'll pick up the pace. VC

This isjust the starting point - a lot more contained in this song.
Exodus 33:20
I hear this song as stressing the importance of humility in a person's character... any other thoughts?
yes. It's about narcissism
It's about the Bible, specifically referencing the Book of Exodus. "Infidels' is one of Bob's strongest Christian albums, and one of his best. Bob had recently converted from Judaism to Christianity when he wrote it. Of course, the Bible teaches humility.
