I've done some stupid things when younger but paddle boarding for the first time in February is crazy. Happy 30th Birthday Myles, you're a legend.

It's like everything in this universe - balance between the challenging and the peaceful. Winter v summer, rain v sunshine. On Alba you get to experience these contrasts in magnified glory. And yes, clean, flowing water is the most precious gift. :)

You both are brave, my idea of a freezing canal is cuddling in front of the fire with a good book not going on a paddle board !
Soon the weather will get warmer and lockdown will ease and then cease - so happy cruising and paddleboarding days ahead! Oh dear! you are having tough times! Frozen canals, nearly falling in, travelling through ice (never good for the boat), and the neverending cold. You both look exhausted. Take care and stay safe.

On that plank to help you get from the boat to shore nail some narrow slats of wood about 15 inches apart so you do not slip on it when frosty or snowing.....a challenge through the ice.....

Happy birthday Myles 🎉. You're a real boater now you've fallen in 😂. When I used to row we always said you're not a real rower until you've capsized. Props to you Marina for pulling that surprise off 🙂. A tip to prevent the hose freezing is to drain it every time it's used, utilise gravity from chest height or so as it's wound up 😉
One way of getting dieselengine work better when it's freezing is to mix in some kerosene in the tank. Up to 50% makes your engine work perfectly down below -40C. Without the kerosene the diesel will wax up.
Please adapt your stepping boards and some 2inch x 2 inch x the width of the board and attach to the very end and then another piece the distance of the rim of the boat []"""[]""""" this will hold plank onto the boat. Then in the summer coat the top of the plank in paint mixed with sand to make it non slip. Have you got a slow cooker? you load it up with veg meat etc switch it on and in a couple of hours ish it will be cooked. In winter lots of peppers as it boost the immune system.

Good Nz morning M+M...Happy Birthday Myles. You don't look a day over 40 mate.!!!; With your diesel tank, ALWAYS ALWAYS keep it full in winter. Condensation does happen on part empty fuel tanks. Which produces the diesel bug. Condensation (H2O) and diesel do not mix. There should be an additive on the market in Uk, to mix in with your diesel which helps kill the bug.With your stuttering of the engine, it's possible your fuel filter needs changing. When did you last replace your fuel filter?. There should be info online to help you get the right brand. This episode should have been titled, "Alba the Ice Breaker." Loving your channel. Myles and Marina, love the video. Well done both on paddle boarding in the freezing cold. No one ever seems to wear a life jacket on a paddle board, is it because the canals are not that deep. That ice at the end of the Vlog when you were going for water was very scarey. Hope you managed to get to your mooring just past the bridge OK. A very well produced Vlog. You guys make great videos... My icebreaking story ends with a holed hull.. back in 2013ish I was on the grand Union and a work boat butty unfortunately got more than they bargained for breaking thick ice attending to customers.. they were holed at the bow on the water line.. they managed to temporarily plug the hole but not before taking on 6 inches of water..

Really enjoy you both. You seem to get along so well. My wife and would not survive on a narrowboat together. As for losing a glove, my wife says the washer eats one of her socks, 😆

Another brilliant video showing all the warts of boat life which is clearly not for the fainthearted. On the other side of the coin there are lots of upsides and I wouldn't change it for the world. Marina on a different tack you could save yourself a lot of work and bother by installing clingfilm style doublglazing. It is very cheap at about £7/8 and all you need is the kit from either Screwfix or on line, a pair of scissors and a hairdryer. I have it on my narrowboat and it has cut out the condensation completely and the boat is a lot warmer. If you do it carefully and really tighten the clingfilm up properly with the hair dryer you will hardly notice it from either inside or outside.

Hi Miles and Marina, love your vidoes but every time you use that scaffolding plank to get on and off Alba, I worry you are going to slip, particularly when its icy. You could so easilly break a leg! Please nail some battens across it so you have some grip and they will stop you slipping off! Take care and stay safe

Ice breaking ice is the quickest way to strip the blacking from the hull not a good idea

You might had frozen fuell , in winter you can ad up to 2% petrol to your diesel to prevent it freezing :)

Well, that was a bit dramatic. First of all, belated happy birthday Myles. Marina, I'm quite surprised that the warmth of your smile didn't melt the ice. There is something that intrigues me. How does it work regarding the car? If I remember correctly, you had the car and boat in London. You then set off on the boat up the Thames and onto the canal network. I'm really old but I have a narrowboat and I still watch cruising Alba every week and I can still learn from Marina and Myles. I still cruise all spring summer and autumn, am singlhanded and I shall be 75 this year. You never stop learning.
