There's something about this game that feels strange. It doesn't really feel like how SpongeBob should feel. It's like some kind purgatory version of Bikini Bottom. I'm not sure if that has to do with the more realistic art style, character designs, or the lighting. But it's honestly my favorite SpongeBob game. I always come back to it for some reason. The music variety is the biggest knock against it. I think they just tapped George Sanger on the shoulder a month before they had to ship it and told him to throw something together really quick.
A bit refreshing IMO to see a more positive take on the console version. This game has been shit on profusely in recent years especially when you compare it to the Heavy Iron Spongebob duology (Truth or Square has its own problems). I haven't played it recently, so this makes me want to check it out in the future. Also in general referring to the IGN review I dislike the reviewer trope of insulting the potential audience/fanbase of something. Just seems pointless and at times almost petty.
Honestly, learning about Big Skys history and hearing a positive review of this game has softened up my original opinion on RotFD. It's not the best Spongebob game, but is it the absolute worst? No.

It's just become way too expensive to make these kinds of games any more, which is why you usually see them head to mobile instead. Quite a few Netflix animated shows have been getting games lately, so maybe they'll make a bit of a comeback.
Finally! Someone who actually sees this game for what it is! Revenge of the Flying Dutchman is by far the most underrated Spongebob game. I never really understood the absurd amount of hate Revenge of the Flying Dutchman gets. It was an excellent first attempt at a 3D Spongebob platforming/collect-a-thon that fully embodied the spirit of the show while still having its own identity. I love how open all the levels in Bikini Bottom are, the platforming and controls are pretty solid, the different costumes are always fun to use, and BFBB probably wouldn't have been as good as it was had Big Sky not dip their toe in first. Big Sky definitely deserves more credit for that, even though they aren't around anymore. It's also league's above their Jimmy Neutron movie game. I really hope THQ makes a potential Rehydrated version of Revenge of the Flying Dutchman in the near future, because it deserves more love.
My theory as to why “Frenchy” the narrator, isn’t voiced by Tom Kenny, is due to the fact that, since the narrator does mention button presses, which obviously differ between GameCube and PS2, and with the game being worked on up to the 11th hour, they decided to have someone who had a more clear schedule do the lines, if mechanics changed
I had no idea this game had such an interesting history behind it. While the horrendous loading times of the PS2 version forever soured my memories of it, I must say this game's writing is definitely on point and easily up there with the best of classic era Spongebob. Still this game is just way too janky to go back to especially after playing the vastly superior Battle for Bikini Bottom.

It feels rather strange rewatching this video after having now watched Shadow Streak's videos on Revenge of the Flying Dutchman. He says the handheld version is superior, and you say the complete opposite. I'll eventually give the console version a play someday, since it does look really fun despite it's flaws.
As far as the blacklisting goes, I can only repeat what I was told by multiple sources. It was never my intention to imply there was a "magic blacklist." That's stupid. What I will say is Lapin had pull and likely went around telling companies(likely companies that he knew had plans to work with them) to abort and not give them the time of day. "Blacklisting" is a real thing regardless. How one goes about said blacklisting just isn't what one would picture when you hear the phrase.

The GBA game allows you to tackle the stages in whatever order you want, thought the Krusty Krab levels that you seem to have started out with are the meant to be the most difficult to navigate, even though you can still beat them without needing to do the other stages. In my 20 year experience with the game, the difficulty by stages go from Patrick to Sandy to Mr Krabs. As for the story, it's still the same stakes since at the end of the game the Dutchman takes Squidard, Patrick, Sandy, and Mr Krabs away for the same reason as the console version; making it more a twist than anything. And again a criticism that kinda pisses me off for any game is when people say they should have everything at the start. I think doing that makes a game boring and takes away any level of progression you get from playing the goddamn game. Going back to the Mario example you used. Mario games usually determine which powers you can have in each level by ? Blocks that have specific power ups; even then the only variety would be stockpiling power ups in the hub that you grind for. And again with the back tracking or have to hunt for items to continue, Mario 64 has you replay the same level multiple times to get stars but here you just have to play the level once to get three keys to beat it.
