On September 28, 2024, the soap world was heartbroken to learn of the passing of Days of our Lives star, Drake Hogestyn (John Black). The beloved veteran actor died from his battle with pancreatic cancer at 70.
Through the years, Michael Fairman chatted with Drake many times including at the annual 'Day of Days' cast event, the Daytime Emmys red carpet, at the studio of Days of our Lives, and more. In tribute, and in loving memory, we put together this remembrance of some of those moments, filmed often alongside his on-screen scene partner, Deidre Hall (Marlena Evans), who together created the soap supercouple known to their fans as "Jarlena."

My favorite scenes of John is his scenes with Abe and Steve
I' m 41 yrs old and I remember back in 1997 my best best friend got me hook on the days of are lives. I remember getting from exercising in p.e because I would talk to my p.e teacher about the show.
Very nice! His memory will be forever.
I’ll always remember taking my young children with me to a fan event at a park in LA. Many of the top cast were there. I asked Drake if he would let me take a photo of him with my children. He said “Sure,” got down on their level, and put one on each knee. It’s an adorable photo and I’m so glad we did that. Such a cute photo and a sweet memory of such a kind man.

Drake was such a kind soul. A genuine good man. I loved to hear his laugh. He will be greatly missed. These little interview clips just prove his warmth and overwhelming optimism for life and devotion to Days. Such a lovely tribute, Michael. Thank you for sharing. May he rest in peace. ❤

Such a beautiful human being he was he helped so many people who be who they are and I think it was fantastic the impact he had on others like my self
I've watched since I was 13 & & I'm 72 now so I have seen Drake since his beginning. All these actors are like my family so believe ME when I say I will miss him greatly but more sorry the big C had to be his cross to carry. My parents etc all had the same. Lovingly, avid DOOL watcher,Mary Jordan

He was right. My mother-in-law hooked me onto Days of Our Lives in May of 1971. And I have followed the ups the downs, the crazy, the touching, and everything in between for over 50 years and counting. The characters feel real and we care about them. Losing our favorites is never easy. I have cried over every single one. Tom and Alice Horton, Mickey, Stephano, Doug and now John. Thank you for the lovely memories with Drake and Diedre. I hope Days understands, that we need these long term actors and characters. I am hoping the next generation to bestow wisdom on the younger generations of Salem will be Bo and Hope.

Such a beautiful tribute to him Drake helped me through so much I cannot even describe it he helped me through lot of tough times in my life and he was fatherly figure to me I shall always cherish those moments I had with him on face time saying hi hunnie I said hello hunnie that was such a sweet moment that I shall never forget he was such a great man who inspired so many people to be who they are even my self he helped me get into shape and be proud of who I am and I shall continue to swing for the fences drake thank you for the beautiful memories you gave us and your beautiful wisdom ❤️❤️I shall miss you sliver fox forever
Have watched Days since 1985, a year before Drake came on. I so well remember when he thought he was Roman. He sure was charismatic and handsome. I remember early on, Drake’s Roman would refer to Sami and Eric as “the twinners” when they were toddlers on the show. He always put his own little spin on the dialogue. That’s a fact. Can hardly believe how fast the years flew by. R.I.P., Drake. The epitome of the soap opera leading man.
Can't believe he's no longer with us... I used addicted to that show when I was in high school. I would program my VCR to record it when I was in school and watch it after school.

I grew up in the 80s starting out on the ABC soaps and in the 90s in college I was put onto Days. I haven't watched stories in many yrs but man back then they were can't miss and I was hooked! John Damn Black and Dr Marlena Evans! When he passed last week and Marlena came to mind I did have to briefly brainstorm her last name. I knew it wasn't Black or Brady. I said a few times Doctor Marlena...🤔 EVANS! 😁💙💪🏼💯😢

I WATCHED IT ON NBC WITH HER AND TOGETHER, MY SCHOOLMATES KNEW NOT TO CALL THE HOUSE FOR ONE HOUR AND FIVE MINUTES SO WE COULD BREATHE AGAIN.
I FIRST SAW HIS HEARING AID AND CRIED BUT UNDERSTOOD. GRAM DIDN'T KNOW. SHE DIED AT 97 YRS YOUNG.

I’ve not watched a soap in years. I remember Drake’s first appearance on Days as the Roman replacement (facial reconstruction I believe was the plot line). I heard about Drake’s death a couple of days ago. Even though I haven’t seen Days in a very long time, I’m very sorry to hear of his passing. I always liked his character(s). (Roman/John).
BTW, is Deidre a vampire because she hasn’t aged.
My favorite scene is when Abe shot Brady, that "why did you shoot my son Abe?"line😢

For so many years we knew him as John Black, the name Drake just don't seem right i.e to me as a fan. I grew up with Days of Our Lives. We rushed home to watch the soapies.
