Bought these speakers in 1992. Replaced the woofers about 15 years ago, by ourselves and one of the mids a few years ago when the polydome was pushed in. Now I wish we had soldered in heavier copper wiring to the new one, have a second replacement in case the second mid fails, but the original seems to sound just a bit better. Looking for some new stereo replacements now as our 1992 Yamaha amp finally failed completely. Brought home some expensive new speakers to try ($6K, so not that expensive) and both of us thought these old Infinity Kappas were just as good, not replacing them yet. I think some $26K speakers did sound better, but would rather have a few trips to Europe or Machu Picchu instead during retirement.
I used to own a pair of Infinity Kappa 7. Excellent Sound. I gave them to my brother-in-law a long time ago. I now own a pair of Infinity Kappa 7.1 speakers. I learned my lesson.
Yes, I like the NAD 523 and 521, and the best is that you can buy these at less than $50, just be sure that it has a remote and the door doesn't stick.
Great speakers those were but you had to be careful not to pair them with the many "bright" sounding receivers of the late '80's to mid 90's like Nikko, Akai and such, for those ha d a tendency to make the tweeters scream at you. The SX-1010 on the other hand is one of the best receivers Pioneer ever made in the 70's and God knows they made a lot of great ones. The 1010 may look like your typical early-to-mid 70's receiver but inside it already had the innards of the legendary "silverface" 50 series that followed it. Those sounded crystal clear which was appealing to many including me. But as I grew older and mellower I stuck with restored 70's receivers but "defected" to upper-tier Kenwoods like the KR-6600 which has a more laid back, warm sound that old geezers like yours truly appreciate. It's better suited to jazz but for rock, the Pioneers were kings of the hill.
Too bad, they were great speakers and didn't deserve the abuse, I regret selling these pair to get something else. 3 months ago I gave my 14 year old nephew a complete setup, nothing fancy, a set of Polk bookshelf speakers and Onkyo integrated with bluetooth. He has already blown the speakers. I will give him another pair when I find them for cheap. The way I see it is 1) They learn not to play them too loud for too long 2) It means he is enjoying the system, better than the nicer setups I gave my kids when they were 17-18 and they never used it, preferring their iPods.
dictionary reference has the following description: "9. representing the high quality of a past time: vintage cars; vintage movies." Not defending the usage, just another term in common use to describe clothing, cars and other stuff that can't be classified as antiques, or worse yet as "old", also prefer the term better than "old school" which is how my kids refer to most of my stuff.
I bought some Kappa 7's about 2 years ago from a used record store, didn't know really what I was getting until I got them home and played them....incredible sound!!!!! I would like to get some 8's or 9's if I could find them for a decent price!! One observation I wouldn't stack a DVD/cd changer or anything on top of an amp like that, the amp needs to breathe to stay as cool as possible, that is not good for your amp/ receiver! Take it off please!!!!!
I was given these speakers along with some vintage eico speakers but I don't in the least bit know what or how to pair it with I mainly want to play records and probably play Itunes through it aux or if possible bluetooth. Any suggestions for a receiver and record player? thanks
Hey Julie, not knowing your parameters it is hard to make specific recommendations, do you want to spend $200, $400, $600 or $1000. Do you favor modern or vintage. Let me know and I can be more helpful. Generic recommendations to look for on eBay, Craigslist or usaudiomart dot com are any Pioneer, Marantz, Yamaha, Sherwood, Sansui, Sony receiver, they pair nicely with these speakers and they all look really cool, look for one that is at least 50 Watts per channel, buy from someone with stellar feedback, or if buying on Craigslist have someone come with you to test it, might even find a turntable at the same time. Turntables brands to look for are Pioneer, Sansui, JVC, Sony, Dual, Thorens, Pro-Ject, Music Hall, but these are harder to purchase used, even when you get to test them, so I recommend you look at an online retailer like Musicdirect dot com and check out a PRO-JECT or Music Hall, you get warranty and support. They also have turntables, receivers, amps, cables, etc.
All Infinity Kappas are famous for killing amps due to the nonlinear and verly low impedance running. Minimal 150 Watts RMS per channel are required at least. Some Kappas require even more ! So be careful if you intend to buy a pair of Kappas and search the web for further information ! I'm not kidding !
It's fun to listen to Audio Gear on youtube, but I sure hope people aren't stupid enough to judge a component's sound capability through a shitty camera mic, in almost ALWAYS poorly set-up rooms, over crappy computer speakers LOL
I love vintage stereo systems. Infinity speakers were great and still is!

The speakers from infinity model RS very impressive especially for fans who hear music and classic, her voice very clear and precise
great set up. I had the same speakers during my college years... I wish I maintain and kept mine. Wonderful!
Cool! these are great sounding speakers, well balanced, I am sure your dad is happy that they will be enjoyed for years to come.
Diffusori di gran pregio e dal suono fascinoso, equilibrato e delicato.Come anche quello delle sorelle maggiori 7, 8 e 9 Kappa.
Nice set up!! These listed for about $950 back in the early nineties. All the Kappas need amps with gobs of power and low impedance capability.

Kappas are great if maintained well. The Series II are even better.
Damn that sounds great. Even with your crappy camera mic and my crappy computer speakers playing it back. Sexy sounds............

I think I owned these around 1977. I loaned them to my step sister whose brother's children destroyed the drivers.

I had the Kappa 9 RS classics...not the harman kardon shit...loved them, had the notorious 0.8ohm switch on the back LOL!
Yes harman kardon killed infinity & JBL. Like Panasonic killed Technics.
And now samsung owns hk, infinity, jbl, and akg. If someone would have told us that back in the day, we wouldn't have believed it.
it sounds very good patricia barber& john mc lea are singers
They sound natural... not like today's carbage. All clarity and no dynamics....

Good advise not to cover the receiver. This was a temporary setup to take the video only.
