Fire ecology and post-disturbance dynamics in mountain forests of the Alps. Passive vs active restoration approaches after stand-replacing events
This project aims to support the production and marketing of climate-smart commodities Mountain forests of the Alps have no specific adaptation to wildfires, though they are increasingly threatened by altered fire regimes due to climate and land use changes. Current research has been assessing the ecological impact of traditional post-disturbance management of these stands, based on salvage logging, sometimes followed by artificial plantations. Passive vs active restoration approaches will be discussed, with a focus on facilitation mechanisms and their role after stand-replacing wildfires in the Italian Alps.
