    I’m from Bentonville; you only have to pedal hard on the jump lines if you’re not maintaining adequate corner speed. THAT is the “cheat” I tell every new rider to the area; corner speed is everything here or yes, you will be sprinting all day

    • @willbros1499
      @willbros1499 4 ปีที่แล้ว +19

      That is absolutely true....which is what makes it double jeopardy in some places with our loose over hard conditions! To be fair, there is not even a comparison to someplace like Whistler, which he cited, simply because that's LIFT ASSIST bike park action, with even the shortest runs being 1,200 ft. Eric is comparing it to something that's not even an option here, and if all of the trails were built to "coast down, and no pedal" he would have likely complained even more about how fast the descents are over with, right? He did diagram how the trails are built to extend the runs, which is accurate. I mean...if you didn't pedal on Fire Line or Cease...you would come to a dead stop, much less not be able to clear the features.
      My guess is that the next video may have more of the same comments about Coler. If he had gone to Eureka for LLW and GPP, then it would be a little bit more of a fair comparison to what he's used to back home. Even with that...we're still not on the same page elevation wise.
      It looks like they were seeking out the best sections, but I think one of the biggest allures of our area is how you can go on a XC ride and experience everything....rollers, berms, kickers, optional jumps, and mild elevation change, which makes for pleasant and fun riding overall. THAT is our strength, and to me the runs like Boo Boo, Cease, etc...are great, but that's only a part of what the overall picture offers. To me...the simple fact that NOTHING here requires a DH bike, says all people need to know about gravity riding here! Agree?

    • @Capicua718
      @Capicua718 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      You guys are lucky for having such a nice MTB network. Whatever the guy said about charging to jump, I don't see a problem.I think it makes the riders stronger 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼

    • @willbros1499
      @willbros1499 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@Capicua718 .... Agreed. When you are required to put in the pedal power, it helps develop your overall power output, and aerobic threshold. You definitely have to work a bit to keep speed on several of our lines, but what would people rather have....a minute or two long route with pedaling, or a straight down line that lasts 15-30 seconds where you don't have to pedal? It's really that simple, and I for one like having the climbs be commensurate with the descents, and with our limited elevation change, you can only do that by using that method. It also makes the trails more sustainable. There are some lines in the area that require less pedaling if that's a deal breaker for folks. They just have to stick to those. :-)

      Oof that hits close to home! I had no idea how serious that trail was, and a local MTB veteran recommended it, so me being the newb I was/am, full sent it. On the second jump or so I did a over the bars 180° in the air and didn't bail. 😂 Landed like a pancake flat on my back and somehow walked away with just some gnarly scratches. I was sooo lucky, and was able to keep riding (not on C&D ofc). That was my first real wake up call, and I can't imagine what would've happened had I landed on my head💀

    HAHA!! Great video Eric! That step up was pulled from a defunct skate park in Joplin, MO...and it is clearly not made for bicycles. You both did exactly what most people do...buck their way on, and barely make it!
    I wondered when you would make it to my backyard trails!!! I hope you also made the short drive over the Eureka Springs to ride there during your visit, because that has more gravity trails that don't require quite the pedaling intensity. But...in general, you nailed it, you have to be fit just to keep the speed needed to clear our jump lines, and your next video at Coler will iillustrate that well if you ride "Cease and Desist" from top to bottom. Hitting "Drop the Hammer" with max heart rate is a LOT different than sitting up on top of it at resting heart rate, composed, and then clearing the biggest tables at the bottom completely winded....is even harder.
    Nice job on all of the trails you rode. I REALLY WISH you would have ridden in Blowing Springs Park proper, to get a real look at the Karst shelf topography, and some of the prettier sections of trail with some good rock tech, but you did a great job of highlighting the trails you did ride.

    • @jonathantierney7301
      @jonathantierney7301 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Aren't "gravity trails" called downhill trails?

    • @willbros1499
      @willbros1499 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@jonathantierney7301 .... I'm just going by what people traditionally think of as a "downhill trail," which for most people is something closer to the gnar that you see on the World Cup, or larger national DH races, like Windrock for example. Those include difficult rock gardens, steep sections, some berms, jumps, and usually a few substantial ladder drops and rock drops.
      Flow trails are what most associate with something like A Line at Whistler, where it's intended to be pretty wide, usually not a lot of rock features that force technical riding, and mostly big berms and jumps that require a certain speed to clear them, based on the size of the features.
      Years ago, a trail in Slaughter Pen called Medusa had a flow trail that had table top jumps, a wall ride, and several berms. You could ride it just as fast on a hard tail as a DH bike. BUT...people referred to it as the "Medusa Downhill Trail." This was prior to the takeoff of TH-cam, so people would load up and travel to the area with their triple tree bikes ready for some intense challenges, ride down it once, and then have to push their bikes back up the return trail to ride it again. Many would keep searching the system looking for the "downhill" trail thinking they were in the wrong spot! They would show up at the LBS's UNHAPPY to say the least.
      So, because of that, I seldomly refer to anything around here as a "downhill" trail. We have a few within a few hours' drive that are closer to meeting that description, and one new system at the Buffalo Outdoor Center in particular, that has a lot of those components.
      We now have a HUGE mix of trail types in Bentonville/Bella Vista proper, but it gets even more diverse if you include the 2 hour radius around it.

      Walmart employees get their bonuses, and buy HIGH end MTB's. So, a Walmart bike has a little different connotation here! :-)

      @@thetrailtrawler2602 .... Oh I know, and nothing personal was meant by my comment. I think the most famous one was Skills with Phil just ABUSING a dept. store bike! Others have done it as well, but we all know how it's going to end. HOWEVER....
      While people make fun of Walmart bikes, I believe there is value there. How many kids get Walmart bikes for X-mas from parents or relatives, and then get hooked? It doesn't take long to see the limitation of a $100.00 bicycle, but think of how many people get their first taste of cycling on a Walmart bike?
      We have a LBS here, Mojo Cycling, and they will work on Walmart bikes. What happens commonly is, the owners quickly realize that the parts and labor add up to more than the value of the bicycle, and with some brief discussion about it, many parents will opt to purchase a nicer bike if it's something their kids are really into. For adults, it affords them the opportunity to get out on the trails and see if they like cycling at all, before they spend more money on it. Think about it...for what you can do on a MTB initially, a Walmart bike is going to be adequate for a few rides anyway, and you would spend close to $100.00 just for a day's rental.

    $500k per mile of trail? 😳 That falls right in line with some charities using the cardboard signs placed on countertops of businesses-the ones that have the half-circle cutouts in them to hold quarters. I’m not going to call out a particular organization, but after researching the charity that my business was raising funds for, it was brought to my attention that for every quarter collected, only ONE CENT was put back into the charity for research and assistance for the afflicted. It sounds like the Walmart trails follow a similar model.
