  • Touring Catalina Island: From the Ferry Ride to Avalon
Steve Cha (aka Rockstar Eater) takes a trip to Catalina Island (aka Santa Catalina Island), which is about 20 miles off coast of California from Long Beach and San Pedro. This is my first time visiting Catalina Islands, and I am vacationing in Catalina Island during the winter! Probably not the best time to do things in Catalina Island like snorkeling, but it is definitely a great time to try the best Catalina Island restaurants.
Follow me as I leave Long Beach on the Catalina Express ferry ride to Catalina Island, landing on Avalon harbor, then head to one of the best seafood restaurants on Catalina, The Lobster Trap, along with checking into the oldest hotel on Catalina Island, the Glenmore Plaza Hotel.
Ever wonder what Catalina looks like and how to get to Catalina Island? Don’t miss out on this great Catalina Island vlog!

When I was a kid, I was fortunate enough to have a dad who was an avid pilot and owner of a boat… have been many times to Catalina airport and Avalon…. We even stayed in that SAME hotel. That sound of the stairs creaking is exactly the same!
Here are some tips for anyone visiting who is feeling adventurous:
    1. Where the Catalina express docks there is a small beach to the left of it called pebble beach… it’s an absolute must to snorkel… it’s extremely beautiful
    2. TAKE THE BUS TO CATALINA AIRPORT! There are so many little trails to hike like one that goes to a rock that had stone bowls carved out of it, you can see buffalo from up there, they have an outdoor nature “museum” that’s wonderful to explore.
    3. Shark harbor is on the far side of Catalina and is a great camping site…. When I was there it was just amazing!
    4. If you can…. Rent some jet skis or take the tour boats around
    5. On the pier in Avalon there is a fish and chips shop that you should definitely not end your trip without trying.
Catalina is definitely a beautiful place… the restaurants are pricey but worth it… but the best food (and the cheapest) were the “buffalo” burgers you got at the airport.
Sorry for the long post, feeling nostalgic:) just subbed!
Remembering dad flying us to the southern tip of Catalina and seeing the rock quarry, the boomerang he bought me at the airport, coming within 15meters of a buffalo on a hike… the list goes on

My family would vacation there from June - August every year! I know everything about the Island! I loved the S.S. Catalina "Steam Ship", we also flew in on their small planes and helicopters! You could fly into the airport as well and we use to have breakfast at the airport and look at Mr. Wrigley's plane in the hanger! (Yes, Mr. Chewing gum!) The casino showed the latest movies and has a ballroom above with weekly jazz bands and ballroom dances/parties! The chimes on the hill lets the town know what time it is! My girlfriend and her sister would play church music up there and I would go up there on Sundays! Small keyboard-just bell-tones! John Wayne use to moore his boat next to the casino breakwater! I was friends with John Wayne's best friend! He use to greet the passengers every day! He was "Duke" of Catalina! John got him bit parts in movies! If you google him, he will look familiar to you!...you see him once a week or more....? He was the original character "Mr. Clean"! Yes, that's him on the packages and bottles, but they made him look younger now! One of my students bought the "Marlin Club" on the island! My dad use to swim over there, and his wish was to be buried there...so that's where he is now! You can rent golf/electric cars still I believe! Difficult or many year wait to get a license on the island! They have the lowest driver insurance rates in the world! Yes...Orange Julius and A&W restaurant started there! Don't forget the "Salt water taffy", glass bottom boat trip, and I always loved the "flying fish" ...yes, they have wings and fly!!! Amazing! I could go on and on!!!!! And yes, I was there when the Mexican pirates took over the Island for a day! Scary stuff when I was a young kid! Not many people remember that one! It's one of the most relaxing and fun vacations a family can have!

I visited Catalina as a vacation destination for the first time I'm November for Thanksgiving. I stayed at the Hotel Atwater, directly across the street from where you stayed. It is a gorgeous hotel and one of few with an elevator. Loved it so much that my family and I went back over Christmas vacation. It was pouring rain the day of arrival and departure during Christmas, but we still had a wonderful time.

I went there in 1973 on my senior "ditch day". We took a small cruise vessel, as the express was not available then. I remember seeing sharks from 1000 yards out of San Pedro all the way into Avalon Harbor. For that reason, I would not suggest swimming in Catalina Island.

The place looks interesting. Perhaps on a sunny warm day the whole atmosphere would be more jovial. The lobster looked delicious, but I love lobster. It tastes sweet to me and dipped in butter. HEAVEN. I love sea bass too, but served more plain. I'm sure they have it served differently. Now... why did your hotel look TEENY WEENY inside, but GIGANTIC on the outside, meaning balcony? It looked so LONG, but there was not that space inside. Was it the bathroom? I would love a tub, but tubs are considered unsanitary. If the cleaners are doing their jobs properly, the entire tub SHOULD BE SANITIZED BETWEEN EACH GUEST. I MISS MY BATHTUBS. If hanging out on the balcony, soaking in the tub too!!! Thank you for taking us with you. A lot to see and do and GREAT FOOD!!! ❤❤❤❤👍!

Dude, you missed the mark this time.
Catalina Express - I recognize the front of the Long Beach building, where was everyone?
    You must’ve taken the 6 a.m. boat.
**Don’t bother paying extra for the “Commodore Lounge” (unless you were comp’d), it’s not worth $40! more each way for a lousy drink and cheap snack.
If one is prone to seasickness:
    - considering getting a scopolamine patch (prescription needed) to apply behind the ear
    - don’t sit on the upper level (what formerly was the Commodore Lounge level), sit inside on the lower level near a window
I didn’t see any golf carts! Wtf? Almost everyone who visits rents a golf cart
for an hour or two to explore the island. There are two rental shops within 100 yards of where you landed, you couldn’t have missed them.
Bluewater Grill - located right next to the water, we ate on the rear deck overlooking the water and moored boats, felt like I was on the Mediterranean.
And you mentioned the difference between eating a live vs. dead lobster? Man, no one eats a live lobster! Maybe you intended to say it tasted fresh. There’s more than a good chance that lobster was caught by a foreign trawler off another country, although one might wish it were caught right off Catalina.
Wrigley Catalina Casino - hasn’t been a casino for years. It’s a ballroom for rental although it might even be closed currently.
A day trip is long enough to see everything but there are a fair number who like to haul luggage for a 1-2 night stay. I’d rather spend my $ on the mainland - get some good food and drinks in nearby Long Beach.
Was this video from today? It was in the low 60’s and sunny today but looked overcast and cold in your review.
