  • Young Guns was one of the best westerns of the 1980's, featuring a perfect performance from Emilio Estevez as Billy The Kid alongside his fellow Regulators, all born from an idea from screenwriter John Fusco, who was inspired to bring a historically accurate, action-packed slice of the wild west to the big screen.
So this documentary will break down twenty things you probably never knew about Young Guns (1988), covering all the most interesting easter eggs, references and behind the scenes stories from the making of this nostalgic western, including what was really in the Peyote, the Tom Cruise cameo that you never noticed and what Emilio Estevez really thought of Young Guns being a lifelong fan of Sergio Leone.

Emilio Estevez apparently lobbied pretty hard to get the role. I guess originally they wanted Kiefer Sutherland to play Billy and Emilio to play Doc. I'm glad Emilio got the role of Billy though, such a natural for that part!

The best scene from Young Guns is when Billy calls down to the sheriff.
    Billy: "Hey Peppin!"
    Peppin: "I'm hearin ya Bonney."
Billy: "I see ya got Charlie Crawford down there with ya."
Peppin: "Yeah, we got a whole bunch...." A shot to the head takes out the man standing next to Peppin.
Billy: "Hey Peppin, Charlie Crawford ain't with ya anymore." Billy's maniacal laugh gets me every time. lol
It would have been funny if Billy named another guy near the sheriff and that guy gets scared and runs away.

I always liked the classics of the 80's and 90's movies instead of all the new stuff they were putting out for children my age, watched YGs because I had a crush on Emilio at the time so I started trying to find other movies of his which is harder than you think back before the internet and found Mighty Ducks with him as coach. I loved this movie so much as a kid. Saw it when I was 10 or 11. That's why I loved it so much because it didnt feel like one of those old time westerns. It did feel like a brat pack kind of movie. I couldn't believe they were making a sequel and begged my mom to take me to the theater for it. Loved it too, but hated to see Doc and Chavez die. I cried!

Seeing this as a thirteen year old was incredible. It was the first western I though of as being made for me rather than for my dad, and I thought Silverado was kind of a crossover movie for both of us. Saw Young Guns multiple times in the theatre that summer and convinced several friends to watch it with me instead of them seeing Die Hard. When I was in high school I could recite almost the entire script word for word. It cemented a lifelong love of westerns and the old west lore

It’s hard to believe but seeing the gatlin gun scene at the end in theaters was one of my earliest memories at about 2 1/2 yo. I remember standing in the back of the theater watching this and thinking how awesome it was. Probably wasn’t there for the whole movie just there waiting with my family to pick up the older kids (as us Mexicans always roll with a relatives entourage, lol). Our movie must have ended sooner, probably Roger Rabbit or something since I kind of have memories of seeing that in a theater too and it was released at about the same time. As an adult those two are some of my favorite films. Moral of the story I guess is you never know when you’re making a memory for a kid.

Young Guns is an example to show no genre is actually "dead", a film of any genre at any time as long as it has a connection to the generation at time of release. The reason the likes of Heavens Gate or Silverado were not successful was that they followed the template of long, slow burn contemplative westerns of the 70s. Young Guns fits perfectly well alongside the faster, high concept, more thrilling movies that made up the biggest hits of the mid to late 80s

  • @mattkinsella9856

Most people probably don't realize just how dead the Western genre was right before Young Guns. It's not an epic cinematic masterpiece and it might not be the cleverest or poetic of scripts but it single handedly booted the Western saloon doors back open and modernized perseptions of what a Western could be. Films that resurrect a genre usually only get critical recognition later because at the time old critics don't realize what just happened. Without Young Guns and YG2 would we have had films like Dances with Wolves, Tombstone, Unforgiven, Last of the Mohicans or 3:10 to Yuma? Maybe some but I'm not sure the investors would have been as keen, which could've led to some not being made. That alone makes Young Guns a big deal.

    Correction needed.
"Brat Pack" was not a term to describe a trend of using young actors. It was a label for a group of specific actors. Emilio Estevez was one of them. It was a play on the group named the "Rat Pack," led by Frank Sinatra 2 decades earlier.

"Even though I didn't really care for the first movie...I will still take a paycheck to reprise my role, thankyaverymuch!"
Which shouldn't surprise anyone when you consider how many "Mighty Ducks" movies and even a more recent Disney+ series he did. He must really love working with kids on hockey.

Also...that TV Guide review. I know that as a teen back in the 80s, that TV Guide was what I consulted before I went to see a movie in the theatres.

I get where emilio estevez is coming from - it's not Once Upon a Time in the West. But not every movie needs to be one of the greatest movies ever made. Young Guns is fun, and I enjoyed it as a kid in the 80s.

In total, there were more than 2 dozen Regulators during the entirety of the Lincoln County War. Many were just around for a very short time.

Nice video! I like the 1st Young Guns, but have to kind of agree with Estevez that at the time it felt more like a western that was supposed to be cool because it had hip, young actors. I've always had trouble separating the "brat pack-ness" of the film from seeing it as a more regular western. I want to be reminded of the 1800s, not who was thought of as cool in the late 1980s.

What Esteves fails to appreciate about Young Guns 1 is that its chaotic, "heavy metal" nature fit that period of the Regulators perfectly. No, it wasn't a traditional Western but that wasn't a traditional Western occurrence either. YG 1 is one of my favorite Westerns simply because it captured the Historical spirit so well and was fairly accurate historically. Young Guns II was a better movie in some regards, but I hold it in far less esteem because it was so historically inaccurate. It's riddled with untruths. Though it did focus on a very plausible truth, that Garrett did not kill Bonney. The problem is the movie used a preposterous claimant. If Bonney survived, he went on to live as John Miller, a man who had no record of existing prior and sported evidence of wounds and physical attributes matching those of Bonney. Miller never laid claim to being Billy the Kid, denied that he was the Kid when recognized as such, and was reluctant to discuss his past with anyone outside of family and closest friends. Accusations of Miller's true identity were denied by Miller's family until 1938 when it finally confirmed that Miller was indeed Bonney who had fled to Arizona to live out his life in peace. Whether it's true, I don't know, but I wouldn't be surprised if that were the case. Many oddities surrounded Bonney's supposed murder.

My favorite portrayal of Billy The Kid was in the John Wayne movie Chisum. None of the regulators were in the film, but Tunstal was Billy's mentor in the film.
The lack of Westerns in the 80s is like the lack of Biblical films after the success of The Passion Of The Christ. During the 80s, Silverado and Pale Rider were successful. Then in the 90s, we had Dances With Wolves and Unforgiven (both won Best Picture Oscars) and in 1993, Tombstone came out. It didn't fare very well at the box office, it had a second life on video. The remake of 3:10 To Yuma was a success.

My other pet peeve was them making Murphy the main villain. For a guy committed to historical accuracy, Fusco would have known that Murphy was dying of cancer in Santa Fe at the start of the Lincoln County War and died almost 2 years before its conclusion. The main orchestrator of John Tunstalls death and the real villain was James Dolan and should have been the main antagonist of the film.

I couldnt agree more with Estevez. 'the first heavy metal western'. sums it up beautifully. It should have been more 'gritty', and only had music from the era. fancy putting 80s hair-metal rock music in a western movie. People still liked it, I liked it at the time. But in hindsight, I can imagine something much better.
