I am just now using the Cana4 dog food with sprouted lentil and pea's. I suppose that one is just as bad. It's really expensive too.

@DeniceGarrou Scary isn't it?! You really can't just chose the "high end" diet or "expensive" diet and trust that it is safe. It's amazing this is still happening and nobody knows the real story. The good news is that it sounds like sometimes the remodeling of the heart (dilation, increase in size, impaired function) can be reversed with medications and changing the diet. Best of luck and thank you for visiting our channel:) -Dr. Lopez

Does synthetic taurine maybe stay in bloodstream and not absorbed and taurine derived from meat is absorbed by tissues to strengthen heart? Maybe thats why taurine levels were showing as normal?

Really interesting idea. One would think that if the two molecules have the exact same molecular structure then the bioactivity in the body would be the same. I haven't done a full literature review to research this theory, but I did come across a couple sources referencing an inferior nutritional value of synthetic (compared to natural source) taurine in formula milk for infants. If not already underway, this could be an important direction of research. Thank you for your comment and for visiting our channel. Have a beautiful day! -Dr. Lopez

How do you know what the source is? Most dog foods use synthetic taurine, not just vegan ones

University of Guelph (Canada) study published in April 2023 counters these claims: “This study is the longest, controlled feeding study to date to assess cardiometabolic health in healthy adult dogs fed pulse-inclusive diets,” This latest U of G research, which appears this month in The Journal of Nutrition, found that dogs fed diets containing up to 45 per cent whole pulse ingredients and no grains over 20 weeks showed no indications of heart issues.
As well, the dogs’ body composition altered less than 0.1 per cent from baseline no matter which diet they were on, suggesting they also maintained lean body mass.

20 weeks is a very, very short time frame - not long enough.
