Been a bodynan/painter for 30 years and experimented with all sorts of cobble togeather paint setups. I find a single stage with a clear was something we done many times. No troubles. I think for what your initial end goal was that you were trying to achieve, you far exceeded it, and out in the sun, cruising around, it’s gonna be super cool…
I have used tractor paint in the past . Spraying it on wet and I added clear coat into the mix . Then after dry I clearcoated the whole car . It shined like heck for 5 years until I sold car . I also raised my pressure when spraying that eliminated the orange peel .
@@RustyZipper I also use a true hvlp setup which is a 5 stage turbine pump max psi is 11.5 lbs it's a completely different experience the spraying conventional with an air compressor.
I spray at the pressure that gives me the best finish surface. I don't care if I have overspray if the paint lays flat. U have to use what's available to you, even if it's a $20 Harbor freight paint gun and $100 materials. I've used cheap guns and material my hole life. I even use the little nozzle, I think it's a 1.2 tip for base and clear. Some time you have to crank up the pressure to get the material out. I can meet or beat most people's work with sub par tools and materials.
Damn dude!!!! I'm amazed at what you've made appear before my eyes, because if I hadn't seen it, I wouldn't believe it!!! It's actually a 57 Chevy 2 Door convertible!!! Started out with scrap metal! You're a magician!!!!

Dan I like the way you think it's your car. Like the song says I did It my way. It's cool I like it. You did something most of us dont have the skills to accomplish Great job.
I painted my first car when I was 17. I read in hot rod magazines that guys were giving their cars 12 coats of colour and 6 coats of clear. So I did the same with enamel, one after another until it had the 18 coats. It ran in curtains. Never did get dry enough to sand back. 😁 Yours on the other hand looks great.
Maybe the start of finishing projects. It looks great. It's like someone cared enough to paint. Chad recommended windex or liquid glass cleaner to prep. I've had better luck than Prep all,or anything I've tried. He said it was one of Gene's tricks. I think he also said he used clear hardner in his 1stage. Can't wait to see it back in jewelry.
You can scrape the runs to level with a single edge razor blade, then sand it. It takes off less paint in the long run. Remember to pnly scrape the high spots on the runs.
I did a 55 Buick Century Rivera and a bus conversion in Alaska both with single stage then clear coat. Never had any issues with off gassing issues they were over worrying you about. Also did a paint blend on a 71 Ranchero quarter panel repair with single stage then clear, came out great. Did some outdoor spraying in Hawaii, number of cars, same story, came out great. Single stage is cheaper usually by quite a bit. Nice work!
Dan for future reference, when you are getting that much fog while spraying, you have the air pressure to the gun too high. The HVLP is supposed to minimize the overspray like that, when I started shooting with the lowest possible pressure at the gun I started getting better paint jobs and using a hell of a lot less material to do it. More ends upon the car than in the air. I need a Murr to hold a light for me, I can't see a damn thing when I am shootin paint, mostly because I like medium to dark colors. That is looking great Dan, and as long as the single stage flashed enough, and you color sanded it, the clear should stick no problem.
Spot on. Way too much pressure at the nozzle. Turn the air down and the paint up. Runs are annoying, but correctable. Dry clear that doesn't flow and level out... That requires a repaint.
@@tiporari keeping it moving, not laying down thick coats, having the material thinned out just enough that it doesn't run or sag but flows easily is the hard part. Once you figure it out though, you can repeat it often. The temp makes a big difference in how well it covers, flows and resists runs and sags. I am still figuring it out, and I try to keep as much overspray out of the air as I possibly can, other than coverage and finish, limiting the overspray is my big concern. I want it on the car, not floating around my shop coating everything. I have a Devilbiss gun with a regulator, I run 40psi to the gun and then turn the gauge on the gun down to where it doesn't make lots of overspray. Its one of the best investments I ever made, I think it was around $350 or $400. That clear really messes me up when it gets on my skin or I inhale a bit of it.. so I can really anal about it.

What people don't get is these old cars have lots of bumps and repairs that always need fixing. These will be family heirlooms we actually drive. Dan the man...watching your vid reminds me of the troubles I had when I was learning....and after all the years have gone by with (mostly) successful paint jobs I've now came to the conclusion that we humans have certain things we are good at and also have things we are not so good at... mostly due to impatience and lack of research and practice. In other words some people are "naturals" and the rest of us have to work harder and be determined to get it right...or make a decision to let someone else (a natural) do the things we have a hard time with. If your heart's not into it, it probably won't turn out so good or it will take twice as long to do something. Plus the thing I 've noticed over the years is that it is important who we get advice from and to not take-on too many advisers. Choose someone who has been successful and stick with them...and throw away your pride and LISTEN. "Too many captains means the ship will probably sink" Yes there are a lot of tips here in your comments (including mine) but too many will only cause confusion...as you already know. My hat's off to you for persevering. Oh, if you used a catalyst with the tractor paint I think most catalyst has UV protection in it...I was told it does by an auto paint store (Wesco) where I got it...but I don't know if all catalyst has UV protection in it. The clearcoat you put on looks great!

At the end of the day, it's your car and if you're happy that's all that matters. For a budget garage spray it looks great and it's going to make you smile when you drive it. Job done.
Looks good you’re working your butt off and it’s paying off
Dan the man...watching your vid reminds me of the troubles I had when I was learning....and after all the years have gone by with (mostly) successful paint jobs I've now came to the conclusion that we humans have certain things we are good at and also have things we are not so good at... mostly due to impatience and lack of research and practice.
Thanks my friend! Yeah. I enjoy learning from those ahead of me.
Dan, I love your sense of adventure. My dad used to “try” things as well. 👍🇨🇦
You made that car look so good anyone would be proud to own it Well done!
