They don't pick them. It's more of management looks for a Musical director and said Music director picks the musicians they know/trust would be a good fit for the music.
Man just be talented and at the top of what you do. But most importantly...know the right people. Surround yourself with those that are doing what you want to do and you will eventually get there. Most gigs are gotten off connections, not skill
