Not even close. I am planning to do this build right now. Only different I will have is the lh4 from arken and use a 16" barrel. It will be my deer rifle that may see some range use.
I just bought all the parts for a very similar rifle. MDT Oryx stock in tan, Howa 1500 SA with 24" heavy barrel in 6.5 Creedmoor, MDT Oryx bipod, 10 round magazine, Warne rings and mounts, Arken Optics EP-5 7-35x56 scope and caps All in $1700. Cant wait to build it and start shooting.
Thanks for sharing. I have a Howa 1500 in 308. It is a hunting rifle in that it is all factory except for the muzzle break I installed. An Arken 4-16 x 44 scope sits on it. The factory trigger is the best that I have ever used in my limited experience. With good hunting ammo I can shoot sub 1 moa at 100 yards consistently. Over the spring/summer I had decided to replace it with a 300winmag. However, I took the 308 out early this fall to shoot and decided that I will be keeping it. I appreciate your video and tutorial. Thanks again.
I like seeing these budget build videos. I have full customs these days but it is great to see more economical rifles out doing some work. As for 308, I don't use one for anything, nut if I could only have one rifle.... we it probably wouldn't be a 308 either, but I would think about it for a bit.
LOL yep I hear you. It's not my first choice for anything really. But some people still really love it, and a lot of companies are still making rifles chambered in it. I figured, why not.
I had a Howa 1500... and it had a hogue overmold regular stock... and it shot great... 24" 308 heavy barrel...$600 with a vortex 4-16 on it... I did buy a legacy international magazine kit for it for another $100 with 3 mags
@@PrecisionRifleNetwork I've been a Remington guy forever, but the pricing has gotten out of hand for what you get. I was looking at the TIKKA as well. Like everything we do, its expensive.
.308 is great. Very good for most uses and is what I chose for my Scout Rifle setup and I have it in an AR 10. Glad you redid the test. I have 6.5 Grendel mini-action that easily goes sub-moa. I put my Brownell's action in a Boyd's At-One Thumbhole stock and it's about $250 and is great. I don't know that it'd be good for PRS, as I haven't ever done that. I shoot mine with a Monstrum Hornet FFP Scope and it has literally zero issues with good glass for $140. That's a bit more budget to me, but I've been looking at buying another action to put in the new MDT hunting stock. I use my 46 Hybrid Supressor, so that was $700 and overall is a great budget build. The Grendel doesn't even kick and with my 129 Gr. Accubond Handloads goes subsonic just after 1050 yards, so for PRS would be a nice option I believe.
Just subscribed after watching a handful of your videos. On that ES, it is a little high but Tim from Little Crow Gunworks believes that ES isn't as important as most would say. Granted, it is important to reduce that if you are competing in F class or bench rest. For hunting though, he indicates don't burn out your barrel at 100 yards during load development trying to get ES to 20 ish. Not that you made a big deal of it. Just thought I'd share. Thanks!
Thanks for the sub! I agree that ES isn’t as important as SD. I often find that if I go into my chronograph data and delete the one shot that caused that high ES, the rest of the data is far lower/better. Those random “flyers” are low probability anyway. 🤷🏻♂️
Have a similar 308 set up with the 16.5” Howa barreled action and KRG Bravo. With a suppressor makes for a handy little setup for pigs. Is 308 the best choice for any situation? No. But during the last ammo shortage 308 was a lot easier to find.
As an older Veteran I recently purchased a Weatherby Vanguard, High Country in 270...it was discontinued so I got it at a decent price!...It does hav thee pencil thin barrel?...I clean the bolt with alcohol then ran some Wilson gun oil on it. Then ran a bunch of patches threw the barrel tell I thought it was ready to break in?...It seems to cycle very smoothly. I ran the bolt tel it showed wear marks on the bolt itself!!...My question is??...A buddy of mine told me I need to break the barrel in with At least 10 to 15 shots and clean the barrel after every 3 shots!...Plz I'm fixin to spend some money 0n a decent scope to shot 3/4 inch groups at a hundred yds. Is the break in that nesssary?..thank you for your expertise Sir. From a Tx Vet.
Thanks for watching and for the question. Unfortunately the answer is "it depends." Some manufacturers recommend a barrel break in procedure and some do not. In my experience with many different rifles and many more custom barrels, I don't think a break in procedure is necessary at all. The barrel should be initially cleaned when you first get it, but after that, I think you can just shoot your rounds and clean at whatever your normal interval is.
The 308 will hang around for a long time. It does what is needed. Not my first choice for distance. If you are staying within 3-400 it works fine. And McBride says it will live forever. Good video. Can’t find a mag? WTH?
I have this friend who owned a sweet accuracy international rifle, and he just randomly decided to sell it. I feel like an intervention is in order, but I'm unsure how to approach him about his obvious sins. thoughts???
Yeah, 308 definitely isn’t dead but I believe it will slowly lose market share to 6.5 Creedmoor and others, kind of like how 308 stole a lot of 30-06’s market share over time. I would say the biggest advantage to 308 is that your barrel lasts longer and factory ammo may be cheaper than 6.5 Creedmoor (I'm not sure. I handload and haven't bought factory ammo in years). That said, people who shoot enough to wear out a barrel aren’t going to care about wearing out a barrel because the cost of ammo to wear a barrel is a lot more than the barrel itself. I’ve owned 308s and 6.5s and, in my experience, 6.5 Creedmoor is a more inherently accurate cartridge. I personally probably won’t be buying another 308 but there’s definitely nothing wrong with the cartridge.
It always makes me laugh when people say stuff like this isn't budget. Im like it's your hobby, right? Then spend on it and enjoy it. They also will complain about a sub $1000 optic price being too much, then go drop 1500+ on a shitty iPhone that they replace every other year or spend 1000s a year on shitty fast food and don't think twice.
it didn't work to download, or the app didn't work correctly? I like it when I have zero data, no chronograph, and nowhere to start with load development. It gives you really close "try dope" for your cartridge.
I'd like to see you do a review of that DNT scope! I've been eyeballing that same one for a while, but I haven't been able to find very many reviews on it.
Never was a shill. I paid full price for my Arken scope. It's still on my competition 22LR and I have no plans to swap it out. So the question is, do you have a problem with Arken or me or both?
Is the 308 dead to you? Leave a comment.
No. Just bought a pair of 308s. It’s alive and well in my household 😂
It’s a great caliber. 👍

I'm not sure how you'd get any cheaper than what you did, Joel. $800 (or so) for a 1 MOA rifle with a custom stock? We're living in the Golden Age.
