  • Here’s a quick video on “how to use a crow’s foot adapter” to properly torque a nut. In our example, we are torquing the chain adjuster locknut found on a Yamaha R6. I’m teaching these students not to adhere to “good enough” and to make it a practice of following the service manual procedures.
    Some would say this is not needed and over-kill. My style of instruction is to incorporate “muscle memory” into service manual usage and buying into the confidence of doing it correctly.

    Thank you for showing that. I am using a crowsfoot for the very first time and got puzzled because the angle kept changing as I ratcheted the tool. I kept resetting the angle, but did not have confidence that I was using the adapter correctly. Now I see how to do it properly. Thanks! 👍

      90° doesn't make sense, if it's in line with the foot making it longer, wld be like putting a very small cheater bar on a wrench giveing you more leverage and taking less strength to get to 90 lbs. It's still 90ft lbs, you just only had to use let's say 60 lbs of force.
      That's like saying using a 4' torque wrench set at 90 ft lbs isn't going to give you the same ft lbs as a 3' torque wrench set at 90 ft lbs.

    • @POSSUM3K3
      @POSSUM3K3 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Jdww89 Exaclty the only thing you shouldn't do is have something that changes the angle like a universal/wobble socket, cheap torque wrenches or the wrong hand placement not allowing the torque wrench to function correctly. Torque sticks doesn't matter where it's placed the extensions can only twist so much giving it the correct torque same with a cheater if need be, as long as your hand is placed in the correct spot your torque wrench should tighten to 90ft/lbs no matter if it only takes you 20lbs of downforce to do so. Try it with a 3/8" drive torque wrench at any position with the crows foot and then try it with a 1/2" drive torque wrench and just a socket it should be still set at 90ft/lbs not matter the difference in torque wrench length......if your torque wrenches are within spec. 90ft/lbs is 90ft/lbs on the fastener even if it only take the operator 10ft/lbs to get it there. Now the type of torque wrench can play a difference but personally I like the split beam precision instruments, they have always been good to me I will say stay away from Harbor Freight yes they will replace it but they are worth the gas driving there an back to do so everytime you use and break one. But that's just my two pennies on the topic......

  • @spelunkerd
    @spelunkerd 8 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    Excellent point. I've been surprised now many people don't understand the rationale behind why a torque wrench gives unreliable data when used with a crow foot wrench. As you say, if you keep the angle 90 deg, the sine of that angle approaches zero, dropping the added length to a negligible figure. The reason those guys can make that mistake over an entire career is because of the high tolerance for variance in applied torque.

    • @athhud
      @athhud 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The offset still exists whether you have the wrench at 90°, 45°, 18°, 37°, etc. it doesn’t matter at all. Any offset less than an inch is already negligible. Torque wrenches are not precise enough for a small offset to be of any significance. Insisting on this 90° myth is like saying that the torque changes when you hold the torque wrench high or low on the handle. Regardless of the crows foot rotation, you are still applying torque at an offset distance. Rotating the thing around a central pivot does not magically change the math.

    • @spelunkerd
      @spelunkerd 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@athhud Although I agree with you that the result may be negligible, the math is clear, as I stated above. The right angle distance from the hand to the central pivot does indeed change, depending on the angle between the torque wrench handle and the crow's foot. Plotted on a graph, you get a sinusoidal plot of torque vs angle, with almost no difference at 90 deg. I also agree with your third point, that position of the hand makes no difference, because of the way torque wrenches measure force. The spring inside the head of the torque wrench is calibrated with the assumption that the head of the bolt is directly underneath, concentric with the axis. If not, there is a longer or shorter lever arm length and torque not accounted for. You can estimate that by multiplying measured instrument torque by the ratio of new right angle lever length over old, and you can crudely measure new lever length with a carpenter's square. At 90 deg the ratio declines to ~1 and it is maximum at 0 deg where new lever length is greatest, minimum at 180 deg where the length of the crow's foot shortens lever length. It is a small effect (often negligible) with a crow's foot, but unequivocal. It is easier to understand if you consider an extreme example. I go through a practical extreme example in a video I did of adjusting transmission bands using a torque wrench extension.

    • @athhud
      @athhud 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes when you start getting into higher torque situations and/or the distance from the anvil starts increasing significantly, the position on the axis will begin to matter. In this particular situation with the short inch pound wrench, low torque, and minimal offset it is just silly to fiddle around with the thing like you are torquing fine China to the space shuttle... The wrench won’t even adjust finely enough to compensate for the difference. Never mind the manufacturer’s specified range of accuracy.

    I am new to crowsfeet. Just discovered them today as July 15 2022. I now assume if one uses a ratchet handle one cannot retched it as with a socket as the crowsfoot swings around freely?.

    • @How2Wrench
      @How2Wrench  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm the intern studying under Shane. I grabbed Shane quick and he said use just as shown in the video and you will have success. Crows feet adaptors cannot be ratcheted if attempting to achieve the desired torque from the torque wrench setting. Go back and study the video details.
      I'm going to watch this video right now and learn what he said as to why! One of these days I hope to move from the office to the shop!
      He has a few other tricks up his sleeve he plans on making videos on. If you need help sooner choose and option below!
      That’s a great question for Shane directly! We are just the social media team. Shane does answer questions when he get's back around to non members eventually so hang tight, FYI >>>> he does member ones daily!
      He just returned from overseas training techs and his inbox is slammed with requests. He is scheduling time each day again to answer techline orders. He does not have the bandwidth to provide free email replies as his schedule is full with shop customers, training schedules, and one on ones.
      There's good news though! Shane has 2 solutions for you. One is a deep dive one-on-one with him with video, email and phone support. The other is a "quick fan support" option when it's a quick answer and just helps support the time for him to stop wrenching or training and get you in the direction that a free video had you close. Links to each are below. Hope this message makes sense to you as a decent human being that also works for a living and gets it!

      I'm waiting on one to come in the mail. I need it to do repairs on my Jaguar. I'm going to replace the thermostat housing tower. It has 4 bolts. One of those is slightly under the intake manifold. The crowfoot will get it easy peasy. After doing a fair amount of research on the best way to attack this bolt, I came to the decision of using a crowfoot wrench.

    Another tool to use with your torque wrench is a torque adapter. I own the both regular crows feet and flarenut crowsfeet but I've never used them as shown in this video. Here is a good set of torque adapters www.amazon.com/Tools-93222-Metric-Adapter-Category/dp/B00NABVES8

    • @How2Wrench
      @How2Wrench  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Mark,
      Nice tool set. FYI. This is the exact same purpose as the crows foot. The "difference" is clearance issues where these would allow to go "under" something in the way. They also are better due to the full enclosure of the fastener. You need to "re-phrase" your thought as "another tool". There are times where minimal clearance is available and a crowd foot is the only way to go! Also the use of crows feet or torque adaptors are applied the same. You MUST be at 90 degrees to cancel out the length. Thanks for sharing this tool with our community!

    • @MarkFox
      @MarkFox 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hell you'd never get anything done working on heavy iron 🤣 I sure hope you got atleast one of the cordless 36V Hytorc BTM-3000s to make things a bit easier for the small stuff and when that doesn't tighten it up enough just grab the old 50XL Hytorc cause ~46,000 ft/lbs should be enough to hold some things together😁

    That 90° nonsense is a crock. First of all your torque wrench isn’t precise enough for you to ever know the difference in the minimal offset of the crows foot. Second of all the offset exists regardless of the orientation of the crows foot. Turning it to 90° does not make the offset go away. If you actually did the math you would realize that the difference in torque is insignificant. The difference will not even begin to exceed the accuracy of a quality torque wrench until you get well over an inch of offset. Even then it is still negligible at best, especially in an application such as this where the goal is to simply get it tight enough without breaking anything.

    • @How2Wrench
      @How2Wrench  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You may want to read any manual that comes with a TQ wrench. All the manufactures train the same 90 degree offset cancels this out. We have more videos showing it on a testing machine. We welcome all comments in this community that are intended to help or give experience. Also know that these were students in training practicing skill sets in a lab. At this point in the training (and in many other videos as the student in training was the intended audience) we are not focusing on "negligible or does it matter, or good enough” as much as good habit forming and practical use. Consider this in your comments and please use your experience, comments and advise to better this community.

      This comment shows you may have not watched the video or need more help understanding. Please watch again so you can understand that an enclosed socket will not let you hold the setting of the chain adjuster (the bolt pushing against the axle block). As you tighten with a torque wrench (or wrench) the adjuster will rotate and move out of place.
      The common practice is to hold the bolt with the allen and use a closed end wrench to secure the nut BUT then you are replying on "feel" that the fastener is torqued correctly.
      If you look close the crows feet we are using also will not slip as they have the last two flats making contact with all 6 sides of the nut. We asked Shane for a link and here it is: amzn.to/3Lx02gy
      We love sharing comments like this with Shane to gain new perspectives while sometimes we just don't agree but a good conversation grows from it. Thanks for sharing and the added value to our wrenching community. Keep them coming.
