These Password repeats bring a big smile to my face😀 Being from the UK and not born when these were shown I don't always know the stars but I google them all. This episode was a hoot😄

I love Joey Bishop's quick wit and dry humour... The way he said "excitement" with a total deadpan was hilarious, and "I was just talking to him - hi!" was such a brilliant quip, haha! He even had the announcer in stitches at the beginning.
When the contestant got stuck on "ball", I would've said "Lucille..."
For "polo", I'm surprised no one ever tried "Marco...", haha
Very entertaining and funny too! For me, quite a milestone as I was born the day this was taped!

Abby's another example of women getting better with age, the only other time I saw her was on match game almost twenty years later
I was surprised when I found out that Abby's first appearance on Pyramid didn't happen till the show moved to Los Angeles. Now I see she'd been doing other game shows longer than I've been alive!

Abby's still going. Joey lasted longer than most smokers--died at 89.
It's all in the genetics, I've known lots of heavy smokers back in the day, including myself. I haven't tried to quit in a long time, however I'm still going 💪 and can function normally, unlike some of my former coworkers that suffer from extreme copd and need oxygen
Abby passed away Nov 2020 at 88 years old. 🌹

As a matter of fact, I have seen quite a few 50s and 60s French and Italian movies where we see strong ladies with some muscles.

I don't like Joey. He was one of 3 people I HATED on Match Game
I like Joey Bishop...I do, but the problem with most comedians (not all) is that they just try too hard to be funny, often at the expense of their playing partners. By being the "clown" they sometimes make their partners lose the game! If they do, by some chance, win the game, often they do poorly in the "Lightning Round" causing their partners to lose money! Their mugging and wasting time to get laughs sometimes messes up their partners. However, there are a few comics who get laughs, entertain the audience, and also play well for their partners.
Joe, the celebs don't care that contestants would like to win some money. Their egos are all they care about.
@@manthony777 Some of the celebs do. Anthony Perkins was wonderful when it came to that. I can't think of the date of the show, but when Allen teased him for liking to win, he said he wanted to win for his partners.
@@manthony777 - that's an idiotic blanket indictment of all guest celebs...if someone made a similar indictment about you and a group to which you belong, you'd be whining nonstop.

On Match game Richard Dawson he used to smoke on the show. That was back in the 70 before they they cut cigarette comericals

For the word "Mighty" I was thinking of "Mouse" too, but absolutely spoken with my arm a little in the air (and/or making a muscle) spoken with a deeper voice stretching out the "M" a little in a way that indicates you are talking about the second in a two word title, etc.

@@lynnturman8157 I totally understand and agree that the RULES state "no gestures," but I can count on many hands the times that subtle gestures were either allowed without a word... or admonished with a little finger-wagging... but allowed to slip by.
I think that's what would've happened… Ludden would have given that classic admonishing look and cautioned against gestures ... but at least as far as how long I've been watching this, I don't recall a time when a gesture was ACTUALLY grounds for disqualification on a winning answer :-)
@@lynnturman8157 PS I would say that the gestures that are most admonished would be closer to DIRECT indications of an answer. Like maybe drawing a circle in the air or even making a circle with your hands for the word "circular." Or making a winding motion with your hands for the word "Winding." more fuzzy would be things like making a muscle for "Mighty" or indeed making a winding motion with your hands and saying the word "reptile" for snake.
Allen Ludden is not serious about telling all the contestants not to use hand gestures,they continue to use them and he continues to warn them.
It was early on, and the feelers were out as far as formatting. I remember another 1962 one (should be on YT) with Betsy Palmer. The password was “snore”, and Betsy went up to Allen’s ear and whispered something, probably “can I make the snoring noise as a clue?”

I think the lady with the short dark hair was hilarious, she went well with Joey Bishop, god he's anarchic and funny, I think a bit too much for the 60s, really. He's so watchable.

No guarantee how this would work, but for "Stagger" I might have said the word "Swagger" but in a little bit of a drunken way stretching out the "W"
Is it my imagination or is there a laugh track on this episode? I really enjoy Joey Bishop but each time he spoke there was canned laughter. Very typical for tv shows during this era. Also noticed that people in the audience were telling Abby to say "ice" at 12:37.
It’s quite possible that any laughter was “sweetened” as they say in the biz, making it louder than it really was. The pithy comments of Pat Sajak on Wheel of Fortune seem to get that treatment too.
Interesting, I always thought Abby Dalton made her first Password appearances in the 80s

I just love Joey Bishop!! He makes everything fun ! Every show is funnier with Joey in it ...he's that secret ingredient , that brings true comedy out!
I played Abby's reaction at 11:18 in slow motion five times. Very amusing. The prominent part in Joey's hair looked weird. They should have allowed the players to guess as many words as possible in the lightning round instead of just five words because in the second lightning round they easily could have guessed five more words.
Hilarious episode. Smoking was widely accepted in this Era. Seems like everything is so disneyfied these days.

and the $400 that the male contestant won would help a lot more with college expenses than it does today!
It's easy to be an armchair quarterback, as it were but for "ball" maybe adding "round" and "globe" and/or stretching out the word "Bat...."

Right. Normally, if the word is contained within the password, then it is not allowed to be used. Maybe they added that rule later on? (I think at some point, opposites were not allowed to be used, either. That may have been Password Plus.)

I think where they might've gotten thrown off with "Excellent" is that, to my understanding, it doesn't necessarily mean the top or pinnacle. Something can be excellent but not necessarily the top winner or the best. It means very good, certainly (and I suppose the clues should have stayed in that realm).
To this day I don't get how Joey Bishop was in show business. Sinatra's buddy, I guess.

I'm a Joey fan in his natural setting, but wouldn't claim Joey "elevated" anything here. To the contrary. The purpose of this show is win a specific word contest, not to conduct nonstop standup and wisecracks, while losing every game.

The word is 'Passion'. They go back and forth several times. Nobody mentions 'Lust' or 'Joy, but when he finally gives the clue 'Crime' the guy answers 'Passion'. Seems like an odd equation. Also: XD LOL @ 24:08-24:14 That's the way commercials were meant originally.

Joey Bishop (a little before my time) has been awful in everything I’ve seen him in. I love these old game shows and he brought nothing to them. His opponent, Miss Dalton, was a very classy lady.

Joey Bishop was a good {not-stupendous} comedian, but he was horrible on gameshows. One of the worst celebrity-players in almost any game he tried.
I thought Joey was an excellent guest panelist on What's My Line; his style of quick-witted humour meshed perfectly with the rhythm of the show.
I wonder if abbey dalton favorite show is downton abbey.

I totally agree. I've never really understood his humor. The loved him. So maybe the humor is specific to 1960s sensibilities. Abby was fabulous. Joey seemed sort of sullen and didn't seem to take the game seriously.
Some folks don't fit this game setting well. Joey is just one of many who don't value the contestant's desire to win...they are too preoccupied doing their act. Many in show business use the business to hide behind a character or persona and are totally uncomfortable in front of the camera unless they are have that public persona turned on.
