    Hugh O'Brien was in the Marines at age 17 in WWII and became the youngest drill instructor in Corps history. That's why he was talking about the marines.

      I think of "applying" all in paperwork. For a job, for a loan, to buy a car, rent an apartment. All these things have applications to fill out.
      it just took too many clues to try and get them to think changing a dressing or wound care. That is unless they were all in the medical field in some way.

      The Major was sharp, not a doofus. You should watch the episode again. Bess Myerson was good.
      Hugh O'Brien was not very bright at all but was on the program because women thought he was handsome.
      The lady contestant really "shot-herself-in-the-foot" with that dorky clue "Poultice" for "Application". In 1862 people knew what a "poultice" was, but by 1962 people in the States had modern medicine and hospitals.
      Much better clue for "Appication" would have been "Job" and/or "College".

  • @gusloader123
    @gusloader123 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Too bad that so many of the contestants, guest celebrities and especially Allen Ludden could NOT spell words. Ludden hated "spelling", yet he claimed to have gotten an English degree in college.
    He mentioned that one day in an episode where a contestant corrected him and the Judge(s) for using the wrong word and the other team won. Ludden said: "We don't emphasize spelling here." What a flaming LIE ! If someone used a hyphenated word or "form-of-the-word" they got the buzzer. A.L. could not spell very well.
    There was sooooo much cheating on this program and most of it was done by the celebrities under the nose of Allen Ludden. The celebrities got paid for being there, but not the contestants. The average Joe & Jane contestants were trying to legitimately win some money. If one of the celebs was cheating, that should have been and automatic point to the other team.
    ---------- --------- ----------------- ----------------------- -----------------------
    In this episode the very wrong Password was "Piece" as in a piece of cake or pie or a chess piece or a piece of furniture. Instead---- the bogus clues given were for the word "Peace" (absence of war, tranquility). The Host with the college English degree should have stopped it at that point and told the contestant to re-read the "Password", but he did not.

    • @elizabethbass2641
      @elizabethbass2641 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Homophones were always acceptable in Password. This is mentioned in several episodes.

    • @gusloader123
      @gusloader123 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@elizabethbass2641 Hello. I know they were allowed later as it got down to 1 or 2 points, and the clue givers are desperate. The problem is that Piece is NOT the same word as Peace. If the clue giver says: "Chess" or "Fork" as a clue for "Piece" that is great, but when the other clue giver (who never passed Junior High School English class) gives the word "War" for a clue, that ruins the whole thing.

    • @oo0Spyder0oo
      @oo0Spyder0oo ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@gusloader123 bollocks, saying piece or peace shouldn’t matter, the contestant just has to say it as it sounds. I know of no other game that doesn’t allow this.

    • @gusloader123
      @gusloader123 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@oo0Spyder0oo You obviously have never read nor purchased an auto or home insurance policy or signed a rental/lease contract or signed an enlistment contract with the Armed Forces. Words have specific meanings.
      Instead of posting silly stuff, why not buy a English language dictionary and look up the word "piece", and then look up the word "peace"?! They are NOT interchangeable.

    • @kentetalman9008
      @kentetalman9008 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      This is a VERBAL game, so homophones are entirely acceptable. If you want to change the rules of the game, go back in time and change them.
