Young guitar players these days are very lucky to be able to see a video like this and learn so much in one spot -- a state of the art player demoing the practical/technical side very musically. Brilliant.
Thanks so much for these videos! You explain things so clearly to people like me (who may not be familiar with slaving for example), and make it a joy to see in action. I always get psyched when I see a new one up on TH-cam. Keep up the great work.
You are an absolute incredible versatile amazing player with vast technical knowledge. Thank you so much for these great vids. It really helps me when choosing the right piece of gear, period.
Great video! Was trying to decide between the 800 and the 1000 and this helped me choose. I'll be playing country and the 800 sounds brighter to my hear. Thanks a ton!
Hi Pete, i currently run my axe fx 2 thru the effects loop of my JVM 410JS power amp section...would you think I'd notice a better difference with the matrix GT1000FX? What are your thoughts on this....your input would be greatly appreciated, cheers!
Well done video! Just purchased a GT1000FX, rather than GT800FX, from what I've seen on TH-cam and what other players seem to have as well. I think the warmer more realistic tube sound will win over, but they seem very close in tone. A major step up from what I've been using for a power amp.
I think Pete has convinced me to spend more money on gear than any other guitarist. I can see anyone else demo the same equipement and my reaction is usually "meh", but Pete has the magic touch when it comes to gear demos.
Man been wanting to know what a modelling amp/pedal would be like going through a power amp instead of a traditional head! I have a Korg AX3000g and have been using the 4 cable method with my ironheart and have had great results, but now I realise I don't really need a full head, just a power amp. Thanks for your demo. You're a great player! :D
@Pete Thorn, this may be a dumb question but I have to ask. I seen the part about slaving, I was wondering if you could reverse that. I have a 15 watt head that sounds great at low volumes and I would love to have the same sound but at louder dbs. My head only has speaker outputs. Could I run guitar to amp head to a power amp to my speaker cabinet?
Hi! Great video. I've just got an Axe-FX and LOVE IT. I want to ditch my tube amps and use it as my main amp so need a power-amp. I'm still a little confused as to what one I need in terms of power. If you're used to playing through a 50watt tube would the Matrix GT800FX do the job?
Pete, love your stuff. No. 1 go to guitar guy on the net. What do u think about this idea: I recently tried the new Boogie Mini Rec. and loved the various great tones achieved at low volumes. (Especially drives) However, I'm worried about having enough head room on my cleans. Would this amp type create a nice clean I can use in combination with a mini ? Thanks
To my ears the difference between the 1000 and the 800 is the difference between a 45/50 watt amp and a 100 watt amp. It would be cool to get both and somehow switch them (while using the same cabinet) depending on which amp model you were using. Otherwise I guess the alternative would be to just use some sort of line level switching system and have each power amp drive it's own cab...which could be cool if you use different speakers to further accentuate the characteristics of the different power amps.
How many watts would 1000 unit and 800 unit be in terms of tube power amp, used in every possible way ( mono, stereo, bridged ) ? Sorry for bad english..hope you understood the question.
Would the Palmer PDI03 work for the load box on a slave situation like this? Amp head in- line out into a Matrix- into a cabinet? Actually- in that situation do I need the Matrix at all? The Palmer site acts like I can use it as a load box between the amp and cabinet- but I feel like I still need the Matrix in the middle to drive the speakers- eventually. I own a Palmer- but never used it this way- only into a PA/ Direct to eliminate the speakers altogether, but I love the idea of having both options. I need the Matrix for my AX8 anyway but...
Hi pete ! I'm a french addict of your videos for many months I must say, I've got an axe fx 2 and I'm gonna purchase a matrix GT1000FX very soon and two 2X12 cabs and I was wandering how do you set the sag parameter of your presets of your Axe fx 2 when you play with the matrix amps through your guitar cabs ? Nice videos man !!!
Hey guys I Have a Line 6 POD HD desktop and I'm looking to buy an Orange 2X12 cab. Could I be able to use the POD with the cab instead of an Amp Head. Please let me know!
Pete- When you do the Axe in this method, are you using mics and cabs internally for your patches? Or are you leaving it with mics off and some specific cab for the patch, then just capturing the live cab with whatever mics you want?
Hi Pete, How many watts and what was the ohm rating of the Weber Legacy speaker you were using. I just ordered an AxeFx II XL+ and I'm thinking of ordering one of the matrix power amps and I want to make sure I can get the same tone without I blowing the speakers. Also, did you have the cab sims turned off on the AxeFx? What about the power amp sims? Thanks for your help. :)
Hi Peter. So you use this with real drivers as in not full range? I am stuck at the moment going the dry wet rote with wet being stereo. I have drivers and also powered monitors with some speaker emulation. I don't know what to do.
You can do either, you can use these to power guitar cabinets, full range cabinets, whatever you like. For example, Steve Stevens used one of these to power fx wet cabs, think 3 4-12” with center dry powered by amp head and the outer wet cabs powered by a matrix.
@@PeteThorn Firstly I don't know how you find the time to reply to random questions so thank you very much, I know you are busy. Nearly bought tickets for the Lowry last night but I'm thinking I might wait for York. Better weather hopefully so I can make a day of it. I have a pair of Laney powered monitors and have been experimenting with for the wet effects after sorting the ground loop issues using the Power Station effects send. They have emulation but I'm not over the moon with their sound. They are great with the AXEFXIII so not redundant. A guy is selling a GT1000FX Matrix amp in my town which led me to your video. I'd heard you mention a Matrix amp you had on a live rig on another video you were using for effects on loan I think. Maybe I should bite the bullet and try it. I have two 1x12 cabs I built myself with G12M in each. A 212 which was a 412 originally but I cut in half for the centre dry with V30's. I think I'd be better swapping the speakers around though. The Greenbacks are only 25watt and I'd prefer them for the dry. Thank you Peter. Oh no. JB died.
I'm shocked how totally different the 2 matrix sound. The 1000 has more mid and lowend while the 800 is a little thinner but has more high end that you actually always lack from a SS power amp that the 1000 doesn't have. Maybe they need to make a Matrix 900 :)
Tone is always about compromise.... I love the clean headroom and percussive sound of palm muting a fender twin reverb, but after playing it at any volume in my basement for 20 minutes my head hurts... it would be nice to get close to that sound at manageable levels.
What about plugging the tube amp straight into the matrix power amp. Would it work plugging something like a low watt tube head like a 15 or a 20 watt head into the matrix to get the power you need to play on stage.
i could be prejudiced by just knowing its not a tube amp, but i really think i can hear a difference,+ not a better one, with this solid state gear. No tubes at all, i think it sounds worse than the amps on all your other demos.
In my opinion, something like a Mesa 20/20 paired up with a 1U 300W SS power amp would be the best compromise. You still have a much lighter rig than a full tube power amp and you get the best of both worlds. A lower wattage tube power amp breaks up quicker for that power amp distortion at more reasonable levels while the high wattage SS amp sounds pristine for cleans. With the Axe FX II, it can be done since it has two sets of outputs, and having two stereo 212 cabs would allow for stereo effects to shine through on both PAs.
I definitely hear a difference between this and a tube amp. Using digital processing it is achieving tones at lower volumes that could only otherwise be achieved by turning a tube amp all the way up. However what gets lost is the dynamics. The difference in the tone based on how hard you pick is noticeably less prevalent than in a tube amp.
cominroitover80 Yeah, I also hear a difference compared to the amp next to me. I mean, this video sounds like it was compressed and processed through computer speakers or something, right?
I hear it too. Tube amps rule as the best example of what a great tube amp sounds like---because it IS a TUBE amp! Duh! Perhaps tube amps should start a 20 year project to sound like solid state!! Like solid state did! And then make millions of dollars by selling Almost as good products, like solid state did! Solid state is WAY cheaper to produce but they sell for like $2000 for a Axe FX, What a ripoff
as much as i love tube amps(and i do,i own a few) the axefx does a lot more, weighs less and has all the effects.its not like a fender frontman 15 watt amp bud.did you know metallica, trivium and many other large big name acts use axefx live? its hard to get the full abilities of it from a youtube video.
it means exactly that actually. He is talking about the power amp, and this all has nothing to do with the tones he has personally dialled in and likes, yet you feel compelled to vent your subjective preference while disregarding the entire point of the video. I don't need to know you to see that
Do you know me? I don't get the "people like you" :) I was being objective, I have an Axe Fx too, watch any other video with an Axe Fx in it, from Mark Day's to any other amateur one, there are much better tones for every genre/preferences you can think of. Just because my opinion is different from yours, it doesn't mean I'm not objective. Cheers

I look forward to these reviews, always great info along with outstanding playing and tone..Thanks for sharing Pete..

@ 4:38 damn Pete nice diminished arpeggio. Didn't know you had it in you.

I'm torn on these because I think I might like the older GT800 better. Were you using the poweramp sims on the axefx?
Thanks Pete! You on a break from the ME tour or are you guys done?
Nice demo, are you using the speaker/power amp sims in the axe?

Load resistor... hmm kinda like the palmer speaker emulator? or those are different gizmos?
You're a great guitarist, and this was an awesome review.

Hey Pete, great video as always. You using an special mic on your cab?
Hey Pete,
Have you ever used a Rocktron Velocity 300 for a modeler?
Hi Pete,
How many watts and what was the ohm rating of the Weber Legacy speaker you were using. Is this setup really any better than using a quality powered FRFR setup?
Hey Pete,
You are an amazing musician!!!
Thanks you

Thanks!!!
Great Video. Who manufacturers your LOAD RESISTER and what the model number please?
Can't beat a good Strat, just something magical about them.
57 and an SE VR1 ribbon mic, blended.... good combo!
What pickups you got in the Gibby, mate? Amazing tone for the style of music!
Thanks, always sounding awesome.
great job Pete!!
sounds good pete, what sound card are you using man?
Anyone know what the difference is between doing this and just using an attenuater?
Hey Pete, when using the GT1000FX, would you recommend using The 100 Watt Webers or the Scumbacks?
jesus christ you are one AWESOME guitarist..
Can I hook up my PC using USB audio interface running BIAS FX to this power amp? I would assume yes?
yes, thats what i do
Great review and demo of this power amp, rock on!🎸🎶♩🎵♩
The difference is so small.. I think the 800 will do for me!!
Hi Pete, are you running MXR EQ at line level?

What model Suhr amp is that?
man i like your playing a lot
Is it better to use an Axe fx II through full range speakers or through a guitar cab?
arceguitars if you're using a cab sim use full range if you're not then just use a real cab
HollowedSun what is the difference between a full range speaker and guitar cab please
what attenuator are you using?
Caramba!!! Great tone!
Vary cool video thanks, and the Gibson sounds awesome !
Sounds good man!
What kind of resistor he is using? Anyone thanks

my dream rig, right there !!! one day :)
thanks for the video i dug it.
Wow, an older video - Jeff Beck hair! :D
Or is it Nigel Tufnel hair? 🤘

Pete thorn rulz \m/
800 more organic sound
I would prefer martrix gt800fx
baked ;)
2020 comment… “Sleeving sounds racist AF”
young guitar players are really unlucky because they can't sell drugs to buy these amps :)
This is an insanely good video! Haha ;D
PS you have 69 videos up teeheehee
You will never in a million years get a SS power amp to sound like the power section of a dual rectifier.
Stupid paste forgot the last comment
is it possible for people like you to ever be objective about anything and not immediately whine and bring your own preferences into play?
👎slim power amps.....YUK💩
Bad tone, Axe can do much better
Great playing - not a nice sound, sadly. Too much brittle & zing - very harsh. Seems I'll be staying with tubes for the moment.
pete eyes on me bud..
cold bruh
