    My dad had a mule for 1 yr old to about 20 years. She learned voice commands so well, dad could leave the lines on the harness & talk to her. He even sat under a shade tree once to show a neighbor he skills pulling a disc harrow. He said "come up" and she walked to the other side of the garden and only stopped when he said wow. "Haw" and she turned around and walked back to dad. Kit was her name. She would be 79 years old this spring.

    Give Duke a chance,he's very young and doing a good job.Yes he dose have a spring in his step but Barron has aswell.Three years ago the video where Lady totally freaked out on the road because of a few sheep in the field.Give Duke time he's a good strong and very willing horse.His little hiccup going into the trailer is not much of a problem you can sort this out Jim 😊

    I would hate to see Duke or any of the Suffolk Punches go they are so beautiful and so gentle and well behaved, Duke just needs more time as he didn't get the same time as Earl has and i think he will be just as good of a horse as Baron and Earl if you give him the same time and training ,i know it is your decision to make but as you must know most of your viewers have fallen in love with the 3 popular Suffolk Punches.
    Thanks for the beautiful video .

      I agree. Some horses take a bit longer than others to over come their issues. He's still young. If its a case of getting rid of a horse I guess I could understand then. Personally, I would look at getting rid of 1 of the fillies instead.

      He has more horses than he has stalls. Eventually, someone is going to go. He is running a business with these horses, not playing with them in a show ring. He is going to have to evaluate which one least fits his needs in the woods, and this is part of the process. I would imagine he'll get Duke over his issues first: Jim is a consummate horseman. But these are the factors that will go into who stays, and who finds another home. Right now, he has two odd horses who don't have a teammate: Duke, and Ken. At some point, I would imagine he will make a decision on one or the other. Either one would make a really good horse for someone else. Ken is an excellent, well trained horse who just walks slower than Jim likes. Duke is very well started and has an excellent temperament. He may come around and be perfect, or he may just make a good farm horse for someone who doesn't trailer every day and doesn't use an excavator around him. There are already several people in the comments asking to have dibs on buying him, so he'll be fine either way.

  • @sussout5098
    @sussout5098 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +25

    Duke looks like a keeper to me. He's very well mannered and doesn't balk at all at heavy lifting and even seems to like to be a partial step ahead. The two questionable issues -- trailer loading and staying swung out slightly at the hitching area -- were minor especially considering he's quite young. He does seem to have good puller qualities. I'm not sure being suspicious of out of place elements like the house in the woods on the left could be considered a big problem but I'm used to being around pulling horses and many seem to always notice anything that is different or has changed somewhat. You just have to always be vigilant to read their head reaction signals anyway. I'm also used to seeing horses reluctant to get in the trailer. One may have been so because he was a little stringy and had a more difficult time backing out than most of the others.
    Both horses are quite impressive with their ability to back up over uneven terrain and even going right over the top of stumps with no problems. This seems a good testiment to what a fine horseman Jim is and excellent horses of course. I always love hearing the gee/haw voice commands.
    These videos are always so nicely done and the colorful leaves of the woods made for such beautiful scenery.

    i did not want to comment until I thought this through. You have many animals on your farm; for the most part they are not pets but working animals that have to “earn” their keep as a productive part of your farm. You all (and I include Brenda and the girls) have to manage, maintain, and nurture these animals. But, and this is a big but, please do not give up on an animal because they are not learning as quickly as their siblings (ie, Earl vs. Duke). Duke is a special boy, with a sweet nature. He WILL respond and learn if you work him and give him the chance to shine.

    Oh boy…I’m almost afraid to say this BUT…I hope and pray you do keep Duke because I am afraid he won’t ever be corrected and trained if you give up on him. Jim, you and Brenda treat your horses so well and I’m sorry to say that isn’t the case for all horse owners. That being said I do know how farms/homesteads work and at some point the day will come when I know you will be parting with your horses for any number of reasons. We as subscribers get very attached to your farm animals as well as you and Brenda but I just could barely but breathe when I read your vlog post headline. I am one who STILL misses Buck and I know I will shed tears when the day comes you do part with animals…I just hope that day isn’t here yet. This is YOUR farm and you have to do what’s best for your situation, we all know this but I just hate the thought of any horse leaving but Duke needs a steady and well meaning trainer like yourself Jim. God will guide you best in your decision but I’m praying you will give this more consideration before you make that final call. On a positive note…I just love seeing you fell trees in the woods. Brings back so many memories of my own dear sweet father as he cut down trees for many folks. Sadly he is no longer with me but the memories will always be and watching you in the woods makes me smile as I remember those days years ago. Blessings to both you and Brenda during this time of uncertainty with Duke!!!:):):)

    Hey Jim and Brenda, a wonderful video today. With your consistent work and training with Duke , he has great prospects of being a great pulling horse. He presently is going through some adjustments to the work and the trailering . I hauled an aluminum stock trailer for years but i always lined the floor with 4 x 5 ft stable matts which helped deadened the sound and road noise and like you do cover them with a good layer of shavings or sawdust.

    Hello from our farm in New Hampshire. Yes, I too have found my past horses had their different personalities and quirks, especially my younger one who was half Percheron ...and my favorite. I'm told they are as smart as a three year old human and that's pretty smart! I never kept a horse I considered to be dangerous, but I also never logged or worked the fields with mine. You need to do what is best for your farm. I hope it works out. ~ Diane

To resolve I put the trailer and horse in a dry lot and any equipment they are nervous around and just place their feed and water need go near and around their fears... some just take more time to come into their own.... He is a Suffolk my mare took till she was 6 before she got her brain on straight. now she is near perfect...

    The fall colors are beautiful where you live. Here in the Hudson Valley, we are getting a lot of oranges and yellows. I am so surprised we have those colors when it has been so dry. I have two maples in my yard that lost the brown, dried-up leaves last week. My other two maples have developed orange and yellow in the last few days. I think Duke just wants to see everything around him. He seems to follow Jim by turning his head and watching. That shed would bother me with all that yellow on the ground. Make him watch all the unloading and loading while having his lunch. If he doesn't want to load, tie him as close if not to the excavator. Two picadillos that if solved, could pay off and give you your best horse.

    PG here, I was confusing Duke and Buck's name's for a moment. Duke? I trust Jim that you must make business decisions on farming and what is profitable. Any of your horses will go for top dollar. God has led me to horses for transportation. Like the Amish "Morgan" horses. I've seen videos of horses very attached to previous owners and other horses. This is a woman's thoughts on horses. I care about their emotional well being. At the same time, if he had his maleness in tact, I would definitely sell him so he could have his own herd of mares to dominate and set him free from his fears. His need to protect his herd would overcome any of his fears of man-made, unnatural machines. I know nothing about horses but what I learn from watching you. I would say Duke is the best horse you have. His fear of unnatural, ungodly, man-made machines is very good. He has been raised in nature, in the pastur and the forest, taught by the electric fences: stay away from man-made roads, trucks, cars, and items man uses.

    I think Duke would do better with loading when you load another horse first into the horse trailer. He does not want to go in first because he thinks he is leaving his other horse friends. But when you loaded Bill in first Duke was ready and fine to go in next. I’m glad you told him he was a “Good boy!” It warmed my heart! Great video.

    Well Jim would you like some"free advice " Take the emotion out and look at this as a business .Sell Duke and Earl and harness for top $ .($35,000) or more . Frees up tie stalls for Lady and Ken .Budwiser Clydesdale sell for $15,000 each , so my numbers are realistic . You have a nice problem to solve and could vet the suitability of the new owner . Are any of your pulling buddies interested. Duke and Earl could come back to beat you sometime in the future at a horse pull .Farming great fun .😊😊😊

    how beautiful in the woods in the autumn.. autumn in full force. My favourite season because of the colours. so amazing.
    Even if you decide to sell Duke, he'll be better in most respects from how he's learning from the way you teach him.. and more likely to find a good home with all that he can do.
    obviously you know what you need to do.
    You might even consider keeping Duke, as he's improving, slowly but surely.. and consider selling one or both foals.. ?
    sad to see any of them go, but depends how many horses you can support..
    I'm sure you'll make the right decision all round

    How many acres is your farm Jim?
    Always great to watch you and the horses. Im retired from full time logging now.
    Just an observation, is Dukes Crupper a little loose? Worth checking its not causing a sore patch ;)
    I remember when he first heard the chainsaw while ago when he spooked. He didn't get to see and face what was happening.
    I know everyone is different but we never used blinkers in the woods, partly to prevent injury's to the eyes as in tight spots branches can get caught, but also so they can see whats going on. Andrea X

    If you need to downsize then the one that gives trouble is the one that must go

    • @EXROBOWIDOW
      @EXROBOWIDOW 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      There are troublemakers that are evil, with evil intentions, always up to no good. But then there are the troublemakers that are full of ability, talent, and energy. Channel their abilities into the right direction, and they may become stars, paying you back handsomely for the extra effort you put into them. Fail to guide them properly, and they become evil. Will the young horse end up giving years of faithful service? Selling him while he's young and restless may not be as profitable as selling an older horse that maybe no longer fits the needs on the farm.

And you said some horse has to go and who’s the best to go. Duke would make a fine horse for another person just find him a good home!

    I only listened for 5 minutes and already am thinking that the problem might be you and not him. I don't want you to be like the bad amish not all are bad, but a lot of rescues of the large breeds show just how bad they treat their horses. I'd hate to think Duke would end up like them. After all your years, can't you figure out why he's acting like he is. After my being critical maybe you think I'm crazy. My opinion of you was so high, really loved your great trained horses. These horses give you so much. Don't let them down. They deserve the best and not be thrown away at any age. I must be reacting through the stress of living these days, not knowing if our country will turn away from God and vote for the people that hate God and kill babies etc. Forgive me if you can.

  • @gentlegiants1974
    @gentlegiants1974 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Horse sweat and repetition, the best training aids ever! Consistency on the part of the teamster. I just started a new job in 95% red oak and it is to my mind the heaviest stuff, like dragging concrete. Have an enormous hill to climb every trip from the woods to the landing area and it makes me wish I had another driver waiting at the bottom with another team to hook on the front going up. Entire bush is in an inaccessible valley to trucks, and to draw a loaded wagon or sleigh up would take a 4up, so it is ten feet at a time. Long skid.
    I vote for keeping Duke! You are blessed to have an expert camera person. I have a hard time getting any action shots as I always seem to have my hands full of tools or lines. I just don't have the talent or a third hand.

    HI JIM & BRENDA....What a glorious Fall day in the woods! The colors of the trees make a "Picture Perfect Postcard "! This is my favorite time of year. Sorry to hear Duke has been a bit of a problem lately, however, you said he did better today after working hard yesterday. You have worked Earl more along side Baron & Bill than with Duke, so perhaps Duke just needed more of your excellent training?! Anyway, I hope Duke stays around for a while longer.....I'll keep an eye on his mane!! Take care, stay warm and God bless.....😊❤😢❤😊

    I think maybe you need to get a better trailer for your horses that makes less racket noise . That would help on the stress factor for your beloved workers 🫏🐎. You have magnificent work horses. ❤ You should keep them together as a team and family. 🇺🇸💯👍
