Rails are never pointless. Especially if someone wants to be able to work on their unit without having to have a separate surface like a table or desk around. I don't have to take a single server out of my homelab rack to work on it, and I love that.
@@BerkeleyDavis I know, that's why I kind of agree with him, it's niche in this case. It's a NAS case, most people buy these won't use a server rack and it's not even full length.

At the time I purchased this my biggest issue with the Jonsbo N3 was airflow. Psu blocked the cpu cooler from getting any and my i7-12700k was always running hot in that thing.
Dude, i bought this on Taoboa after watching your video. Seems like a more compact N5 that still supports full ATX options. The process took about 30 minutes with translating, but it was $144 shipped without fans or cables. Supposedly shipping is 6-8 business days via Air Freight express, so I shall wait and see! Super excited to try this thing out.
@denirodarkqwerty hey man. I actually cancelled the order due to shipping being $200+ dollars. It just didn't make sense. If it was stateside and $200-225, I probably would have purchased. I decided to just downsize my mobo and bought a jonsbo n3.

The money isn't an issue but this is basically just a form factor rebuild for me so I didn't want to spend too much. 8 bays and 100tb storage is enough for now. I do wish there were a TON more matx Nas options. Seems like a lacking sector for motherboards that can be had for cheap, still compact and has more slots for what we need them for. Thank you, I have a quick exit review of the Jonsbo N3 lined up, then the build in this case, Just finished building but will need to go back and re shoot some of the ending as I was up til about 3 am working on it and got tired of the camera being in the way. I will have some time this week while im on a business trip, I can probably get a quick video on the ordering process done during the week.
I ordered one off a random AliExpress vendor about 4 months ago. Took about a month to arrive (22 days, IIRC), partly because I had them put the fans in for me (which I strongly recommend, putting them in would have been a major PITA and requires removing a metric ***load of screws, as shown in the video). Mine came with an internal 2.5" cage which was completely pointless and had to be removed (which was not easy to do, it's screwed to the side of the case and you need a long slender screwdriver to get to two of the screws) because it sits right behind the PSU and there simply isn't room for the cables from the PSU with it in there. If you see one without that cage like the video shows, that's the one to get. Overall, I recommend this case. It's really well built, and is literally the only short depth full height full ATX NAS chassis on the market. Awesome airflow in both chambers, and the backplanes work flawlessly; I have 6 enterprise SATA drives in mine and they run at the full expected speeds. I had a couple of SATA SSDs in it to see how they fared and they did the same. It's fairly quiet due to using desktop parts, and it can be even quieter if you use silent fans like Noctua or BeQuiet. This can sit in the same room with you with NAS drives in it and you won't know it's there. The downsides are the number of screws in the thing - it's crazy how many there are, and really hard to figure out what ones need to come out for what components to be removed. The cable routing is not great, but works - your SAS cables need to be a half meter longer than whatever you think they will need to be due to the only pass through being under the PSU, and there's no cable management mechanisms in here whatsoever, so be prepared for that with some stick-on ones. Lastly, the motherboard size is limited to standard ATX; no EATX and no server boards other than something like an ASROCK Rack MicroATX. I'm using mine as an UNRAID NAS/Homelab server with an ASROCK Rack x470 server board, a Ryzen 3900X with a stock Zen Spire cooler, 128GB of RAM, a couple of cheap NVME drives, a quad port 12gbit SAS HBA, a dual port 10Gbit NIC, and an ARC A380 GPU. Temps are excellent, installation was easy (other than that stupid 2.5" cage), and it's quiet and stable. It sits above my rackmount UPS and under all my network gear in 12U short depth rack. Can't ask for more.
@@jaturnley Honestly I was super excited at first because of the 2.5" cage but thought I would have room to extend it to accommodate more drives, now that I've gotten the build done, honestly the cage is the perfect size but I might need to invest in custom length psu cables because the cables are all being managed under the cage with little to no room for anything else in there. This case would be absolutely perfect if it were maybe 2-3 inches deeper, but I totally understand the sizing and wanting to make the footprint as small as possible. Overall im really happy with it, I got an Asrock mobo in there as well and hopefully will have a video on the build as soon as I get back from my trip next week.

@@iLVTechCorner For B Roll, make sure you have a tripod with a video head. Small rig makes a great one that competes with others that cost many times more.
@@iLVTechCorner tripods are always needed, sliders, not so much. Many people that get them for b roll say they ultimately stop using it. Unless you plan to start shooting weddings and commercials, I wouldn’t.
I need this in my life :) Cant say the N5 impressed me. Too many compromises for the regular consumer market. Too expensive compared to these cheaper rackmount gear. Thanks for putting this out there.

@@iLVTechCorner Off the top of my head. The drive bays is immediately front of mind. Seeing NASCompares initial review the metal looks to have been reduced in gauge since the original sample. I prefer the PSU placement on the JMCD although neither are great, the N5 seems to increase depth unnecessarily and I think height but that can be countered by the JMCDs increased width. I much prefer the backplanes on the JMCD, the N5 feels more like "its what we had", with different activity light and numbering. For the price I just feel they should have done better. It also looks like there is more customisability in the JMCD, that space on the opposite side of the PSU is screaming for more drives :) Also the 2.5 mount, despite being in the way a little, I prefer in the JMCD over the almost afterthought mounting in the N5. Personal preference, but I hate the timber panelling and I prefer the industrial look of the JMCD. All of that said if the price is reasonable when local pricing is finalised it might come out closer to the JMCD (with postage and accounting for possible faffing around) and ultimately I will weight up my options.
I really wish their was a USA based re-seller for these. That sketchy purchasing experience along with super expensive shipping is kinda nuts. Great video though!
Definitely agree, would be nice, but it's also a weirdly niche "enthusiast" product, not optimized for enterprise, and can be intimidating for general consumer.

@@Jlomb436 That's not possible, on Taobao is 950 Yuan that is $130. Then you have to add the shipping to that and I don't believe that they ship a case that big for $14.
Rails are anything but useless for something that is supposed to be rack mount but I can see this appealing to a lot of people who might not care too much about rack mounting it. 6U is too much to lose for only 12 bays if you did want to rack it but in a lot of ways this looks to be a pretty neat NAS chassis given you can fit full ATX motherboard and PSU and it looks like it has pretty good cooling.
While i sort of agree with you, the big draw here to me is the half depth. If there were non-crazy 15” deep disk shelves out there I'd be happy with that too. Not all of us have room for 36"+ deep servers. So this + 3 3u nodes + switch + 2u patch panel would all fit in 18u. I'd say you could get a ups in 24u too, but I'm not aware of any 15" deep upses. Basically I'm wanting to cram a rack under a desk. The Silverstone RM61-312 is a very similar case.
@@Cynyr Sliger makes a bunch of 15" depth cases, a couple of them can hold 10 drives, have rails available and they do it in 3u. That's just off the top of my head I'm pretty sure I've seen a couple other short depth storage chassis that are 3-4u so I have no idea why one would waste 6u unless you absolutely need to use an ATX motherboard or you just really wanted that case. Most 'consumer' rackmount UPS's aren't even 15" in depth (mine is 10") so that's not a problem either unless again you want some monster UPS that's 20" depth for some reason.
@@nadtz at 3u you need a sfx psu rather than atx (+$). The 3701 is miniitx and 15" deep but 10 + 4 bays getting 10g+ ethernet, a hba, and transcoding on mini-itx is an issue. The 3702 gives you uatx motherboards, but moves out to 18" deep and still needs sfx psus. It probably would still fit under a desk. My ideal would be uatx motherboards, atx psus, and at most 18" deep. So basically a 4u version of the 3702. The cx4712 is close but it's 24" deep because it goes for eatx motherboards. The neat thing about the 370x cases is you can make them a das easily.
@@Cynyr SFX PSU's don't cost much more than a decent ATX PSU si I can't really see that as an issue if it saves 3u. If you have 3 3u's why do you need to do transcoding on the NAS? CPU with IGPU is also an option if you absolutely need to do it on a NAS. Then you only need HBA and NIC or a motherboard with 10GbE is also an option so you can fit a GPU. Had to dig around to find the model number but the ED412H40-E would work if you don't mind Alibaba and can squeeze 19" instead of 18".
@@Cynyr ED412H-Q1 from the same seller, 12 bay 4U 400mm depth and it looks like you can squeeze in an ATX motherboard. Can't say anything about how good/bad the case or seller is but still gives you 2U more to play with.

I would suggest Van Loong NAS H8-N, 8bay*3.5 + 4 NVME U2, takes ATX PSU and Mobo, soild build and better backboard, double 12CM fans for hard divers and 3 8cm fans for Mobo, no rails, only downside is the half height PCIE slots.

@@iLVTechCorner Yes, my friend made one build with it, having standard ATX PSU and full ATX borad are super nice, less noise and better cooling, like I said, only downside is the half heigh PCIE slot, you can't install a really powerful graphic card in it.
@@iLVTechCornerthats a shame, so you would need an 8i card and use 3 of the 4 connectors so you can use all 12 slots... Thats quite the nummer, neat case overall tho.

@@whatwhat-777 Congrats on picking up the case! Your Proxmox server is going to look amazing in that rack. For Unraid performance, it's been rock solid. The drive temps in the hot-swap bays stay under 40°C, even during parity checks, and the SSDs inside the case hold steady at around 40°C, even at idle. They don’t fluctuate much since they’re positioned right behind one of the case fans, keeping them nice and cool. I haven’t added a 10-gig card yet, but it's something I’m considering down the line-so stay tuned for that! On the fans, I originally thought about upgrading to Arctic P12 Max fans, but the airflow has been great so far. I might swap them out eventually, but it'll probably be for aesthetics (maybe some RGB to keep the blue theme) rather than for noise or airflow. Also, I’m thinking about swapping the Noctua L9i for the BeQuiet SlimRock 2 since I have it lying around and could probably sell the L9i more easily. Just an idea I’m playing with! Your rack IS going to be chef’s kiss, can’t wait to hear how it all turns out! Thanks again for the support!
@@hamany99 they sell it in 3 variations, you can buy bare bones (no fans no cables), you can get it with cables only (SFF to SATA breakout), or you can get it with cables and fans. I got the one with the cables and fans because the 3 fans were cheaper then the cheapest 3 fans at microcenter and the cables are directional so finding them on amazon would be a pain.
having almost finished the build, yea that cutout at the bottom is tight for the 3 sff to sata cables. The top one under the PSU was fine for me to get 2 leads down to the backplane with room for more to fit.
This is what the N5 should have been. A desktop/rackable case with a decent design (although I'm not convinced 4x92mm fans can keep 12 modern drives under control), and damn SFF connectors on the backplane so you don't have sata cables everywhere. I think Jonsbo has been getting lazy with their designs after the N3. The N4 was a joke and the N5 seems overpriced for what it is considering they couldn't even be bothered to respin the backplanes with SFF connectors.
Would have love to see Jonsbo have a convertible desktop/rackmount design. But honestly Im happy with the N5 because they checked a lot of the boxes that they normally miss. It's big enough to get some serious cooling which hasn't been the case with most of their n series. I feel like they always just give up on the caddies and backplane and just re use parts they have in the parts bin, but I'd take Jonsbo's backplane and rubber straps over Sligers system any day. I do hope that Jonsbo one day makes a system with a better backplane and a better caddy system, but baby steps I guess.
They have a 4u with 24 bays or a 4u with 36 bays but pci on the back is only half height. The biggest difference will be that the case will be A Lot deeper.
Unfortunately I haven't tried gotten a rack yet. I've been home maybe a total of 6 days in the last month. Travel a lot for work and its busy season. Probably wont happen until after the holidays but I'll update once I get a small rack for under my desk.
Nope. Not at all. This is a hobby but this case does not have any mounting options for rails, so may not be the best case for someone looking for a case on rails.

That's just off the top of my head I'm pretty sure I've seen a couple other short depth storage chassis that are 3-4u so I have no idea why one would waste 6u unless you absolutely need to use an ATX motherboard or you just really wanted that case.
Most 'consumer' rackmount UPS's aren't even 15" in depth (mine is 10") so that's not a problem either unless again you want some monster UPS that's 20" depth for some reason.
@@nadtz at 3u you need a sfx psu rather than atx (+$). The 3701 is miniitx and 15" deep but 10 + 4 bays getting 10g+ ethernet, a hba, and transcoding on mini-itx is an issue. The 3702 gives you uatx motherboards, but moves out to 18" deep and still needs sfx psus. It probably would still fit under a desk. My ideal would be uatx motherboards, atx psus, and at most 18" deep. So basically a 4u version of the 3702.
The cx4712 is close but it's 24" deep because it goes for eatx motherboards. The neat thing about the 370x cases is you can make them a das easily.
@@Cynyr SFX PSU's don't cost much more than a decent ATX PSU si I can't really see that as an issue if it saves 3u.
If you have 3 3u's why do you need to do transcoding on the NAS? CPU with IGPU is also an option if you absolutely need to do it on a NAS. Then you only need HBA and NIC or a motherboard with 10GbE is also an option so you can fit a GPU.
Had to dig around to find the model number but the ED412H40-E would work if you don't mind Alibaba and can squeeze 19" instead of 18".
@@Cynyr ED412H-Q1 from the same seller, 12 bay 4U 400mm depth and it looks like you can squeeze in an ATX motherboard. Can't say anything about how good/bad the case or seller is but still gives you 2U more to play with.

I would suggest Van Loong NAS H8-N, 8bay*3.5 + 4 NVME U2, takes ATX PSU and Mobo, soild build and better backboard, double 12CM fans for hard divers and 3 8cm fans for Mobo, no rails, only downside is the half height PCIE slots.

@@iLVTechCorner Yes, my friend made one build with it, having standard ATX PSU and full ATX borad are super nice, less noise and better cooling, like I said, only downside is the half heigh PCIE slot, you can't install a really powerful graphic card in it.

Nope. It’s not one big backplane, it’s 3 individual 4 bay backplanes. So they aren’t connected to each other.

For Unraid performance, it's been rock solid. The drive temps in the hot-swap bays stay under 40°C, even during parity checks, and the SSDs inside the case hold steady at around 40°C, even at idle. They don’t fluctuate much since they’re positioned right behind one of the case fans, keeping them nice and cool.
I haven’t added a 10-gig card yet, but it's something I’m considering down the line-so stay tuned for that!
On the fans, I originally thought about upgrading to Arctic P12 Max fans, but the airflow has been great so far. I might swap them out eventually, but it'll probably be for aesthetics (maybe some RGB to keep the blue theme) rather than for noise or airflow.
Also, I’m thinking about swapping the Noctua L9i for the BeQuiet SlimRock 2 since I have it lying around and could probably sell the L9i more easily. Just an idea I’m playing with!

@@hamany99 they sell it in 3 variations, you can buy bare bones (no fans no cables), you can get it with cables only (SFF to SATA breakout), or you can get it with cables and fans. I got the one with the cables and fans because the 3 fans were cheaper then the cheapest 3 fans at microcenter and the cables are directional so finding them on amazon would be a pain.

Since this case is more expensive than the Jonsbo, the title is wrong. If it was aroun $150 then sure but not for $280.
Wish it was available with a nvme u.2 backplane. Those driver second hand are becoming more affordable.
There is one. I think the 2nd one in my description has the option for a backplane with NVMe/u.2
My bad. It was the third link (2nd TaoBao link) has an option for 4 of the 12 bays to be NVMe u.2 drives.
I would prefer the Jonsbo N5 but this is an option.

having almost finished the build, yea that cutout at the bottom is tight for the 3 sff to sata cables. The top one under the PSU was fine for me to get 2 leads down to the backplane with room for more to fit.
Does it only support SAS drives or will it also support Sata drives aswell? Great first video btw!
Thank you & Sas is backwards compatable with sata in most cases, but yes this will accommodate sata.
This looks more enterprise build, N5 is more home use. I prefer a sata plate and 120mm fans.
Right on man! I'm still looking at the N5 to transplant old gear into and maybe use as an off site at my parents house.
This is what the N5 should have been. A desktop/rackable case with a decent design (although I'm not convinced 4x92mm fans can keep 12 modern drives under control), and damn SFF connectors on the backplane so you don't have sata cables everywhere. I think Jonsbo has been getting lazy with their designs after the N3. The N4 was a joke and the N5 seems overpriced for what it is considering they couldn't even be bothered to respin the backplanes with SFF connectors.
Would have love to see Jonsbo have a convertible desktop/rackmount design. But honestly Im happy with the N5 because they checked a lot of the boxes that they normally miss. It's big enough to get some serious cooling which hasn't been the case with most of their n series. I feel like they always just give up on the caddies and backplane and just re use parts they have in the parts bin, but I'd take Jonsbo's backplane and rubber straps over Sligers system any day.
I do hope that Jonsbo one day makes a system with a better backplane and a better caddy system, but baby steps I guess.
A slightly higher, 8U?, version with 24 bays would be amazing.
They have a 4u with 24 bays or a 4u with 36 bays but pci on the back is only half height. The biggest difference will be that the case will be A Lot deeper.

Unfortunately I haven't tried gotten a rack yet. I've been home maybe a total of 6 days in the last month. Travel a lot for work and its busy season. Probably wont happen until after the holidays but I'll update once I get a small rack for under my desk.

Nope. Not at all. This is a hobby but this case does not have any mounting options for rails, so may not be the best case for someone looking for a case on rails.
