The 100 Terabyte JMCD-12S4 Unraid Server Build
In this video, I’m walking you through the complete build of my new Unraid homelab server! Packed with a JMCD-12S4 case, the Asrock Z690 Extreme motherboard, and powered by an Intel Core i5-13500T, this setup is designed for optimal performance and efficiency. To keep everything cool, I’ve added the Noctua L9i, one of the most trusted low-profile CPU coolers.
I’ve loaded this beast with 64GB Corsair Vengeance RAM, 8x 12TB HDDs, 2x 2TB SATA SSDs, and a 1TB NVMe SSD for cache and fast storage needs. That gives me a total of 96TB of raw storage, perfect for backups, media streaming, virtualization, and running a variety of docker containers.
If you’re thinking about building your own Unraid or homelab setup, or just curious about how all these components come together, this video covers the full build process, hardware review, and configuration tips. Stick around to see the performance benchmarks and how I’ve optimized this server for my homelab needs!

    Just did a build with this case using a CWWK CW-8505-NAS motherboard with an i5-12450H CPU, 64GB of DDR5, 1TB NVME (for docker containers...), powered by a Corsair SF750 PSU. It came with a low-profile cooler which is plenty for the 12450H. The board has 6 SATA ports and I added two more via an NVME to SATA board in the second NVME slot. The board has a PCIe 4.0 x4 slot that I'll use to add 10gbe at some future point. The 12450H's GPU is enough for my needs - occasional transcoding of Plex streams. I think with the additional rear fans at the top and a low profile CPU cooler that there is enough airflow. I think even with your setup the low temps show that there was enough airflow. Cramped, but workable. This will be a nice upgrade from the very old Netgear ReadyNAS that I have had for so long.

    Wow, great video. It sent me on a shopping spree. I was able to get the case from Alibaba without fans. I had to wait over two months for it but the shipping was only about $20. I understand the four fans behind the backplane are 92mm. EXHAUST. What are the three main fans? I assume these fans bring air into the box. Correct? I am going with the 6 MB sata plus the 6 m.2 sata solution you show. I think I need three SF8643 to 4 sata cables REVERSE breakout. Is that right? I did not see what cable you used in your parts list. I am buying plucked 12TB HGST drives. They all have the pin 3 power issue. Any ideas on how I get around it with this setup. Am I limited to putting tape over the first three power pins? Thanks for any help. It is a GREAT case and video. I am a subscriber.

    This was a cool build, definitely looking forward to future updates. Also just for curiosity, what are the noise levels like on those stock fans? I’m thinking with a case this big with so many spots for fans, you could probably build a damn quiet system. Not that anyone would really care in a case like this that would probably go in a room where noise isn’t an issue, but I see the potential so I’m curious. Curious enough to where I’m considering picking one of these up myself, which is 100% just me trying to find an excuse to buy something I don’t need.

    This is what the N5 should have been. A desktop/rackable case with a decent design (although I'm not convinced 4x92mm fans can keep 12 modern drives under control), and damn SFF connectors on the backplane so you don't have sata cables everywhere. I think Jonsbo has been getting lazy with their designs after the N3. The N4 was a joke and the N5 seems overpriced for what it is considering they couldn't even be bothered to respin the backplanes with SFF connectors.

    • @iLVTechCorner
      @iLVTechCorner 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Would have love to see Jonsbo have a convertible desktop/rackmount design. But honestly Im happy with the N5 because they checked a lot of the boxes that they normally miss. It's big enough to get some serious cooling which hasn't been the case with most of their n series. I feel like they always just give up on the caddies and backplane and just re use parts they have in the parts bin, but I'd take Jonsbo's backplane and rubber straps over Sligers system any day. I do hope that Jonsbo one day makes a system with a better backplane and a better caddy system, but baby steps I guess.

      @@iLVTechCorner Off the top of my head. The drive bays is immediately front of mind. Seeing NASCompares initial review the metal looks to have been reduced in gauge since the original sample. I prefer the PSU placement on the JMCD although neither are great, the N5 seems to increase depth unnecessarily and I think height but that can be countered by the JMCDs increased width. I much prefer the backplanes on the JMCD, the N5 feels more like "its what we had", with different activity light and numbering. For the price I just feel they should have done better. It also looks like there is more customisability in the JMCD, that space on the opposite side of the PSU is screaming for more drives :) Also the 2.5 mount, despite being in the way a little, I prefer in the JMCD over the almost afterthought mounting in the N5. Personal preference, but I hate the timber panelling and I prefer the industrial look of the JMCD. All of that said if the price is reasonable when local pricing is finalised it might come out closer to the JMCD (with postage and accounting for possible faffing around) and ultimately I will weight up my options.

    Unfortunate that this is so expensive to ship to USA. I think in your first video you removed the server rack parts of the case - are you not planning to put it in a rack? This is where I'm struggling as while a rack seems cool, it just seems totally impractical for a quiet homelab - but in the case of 12+ bay chassis, only DIY option I know of is the new jonsbo N5, this, and actual rack NAS stuff. I'm curious if I could buy this or another NAS 'rack' unit without the noisy fans and <3u and then just not use it in a rack.

      Yeah, the shipping costs to the U.S. are definitely rough, I totally feel you on that! You’re right, I removed the rack ears in my first video just to demonstrate that it’s doable if someone prefers not to rack it. I do however plan on getting a small 12u-16u short depth rack to put under my desk eventually mounting this case. I also have a few switches mounted to the bottom of my desk, and have another PC that I will be migrating into a rackmountable case so that I can have my entire compute stack racked under my desk. That being said, some of those plans are on hold for a bit while I’m working on upgrading a few things in my home office, and possibly moving it to a different part of the house. So, while I’m not racking it just yet, it’s definitely in the works. If you’re on the fence about a rack, though, you can absolutely get away with not using one. Curious to see what you decide to go with! Feel free to drop an update when you make your move.

      @@iLVTechCorner I ordered it! Will be running 11700x. Do you think the case could fit 4 additional HDDs in the back of it? I know they wouldn't be as accessible but I keep seeing that for zraid3 is best at 11 drives, not 12 and is too slow when resilvering for 18TB+ drives anyway, but 2x6 vdevs at zraid 2 loses a lot of capacity, so tempted to just do one 8-drive zraid2 and add a second 8-drive in the future when needed, pushing the last 4 drives to the back. Also excited for your future uploads!

I was originally waiting on the Jonsbo N5, but I grew a bit impatient and went with this beauty instead. Honestly, no regrets, the hot-swap bays just have that cool factor! Thanks for the review. Just want to make sure if the backplane support SATA drives? Also, how can I use my LSI 9207-8i Controller Card with this backplane?

    • @iLVTechCorner
      @iLVTechCorner 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      You're welcome! Yes, the backplane fully supports SATA drives, so you're all set there. To use your LSI 9207-8i controller card, I believe you'll need SFF-8087 to SFF-8643 cables to connect the card to the backplane. However, since the card only supports 8 drives, you might also need a SATA to SFF-8643 breakout cable for the last 4 drives to fully utilize all bays (this one may be tricky to find as its a directional cable). It’s a pretty straightforward setup overall. Let me know if you need more guidance! And if the review helped, feel free to subscribe for more updates!

      @@iLVTechCorner I’m so into this case that I just dropped $350 (shipping included!) to bring it into my network rack! 😆 Going to turn it into my beefy Proxmox server. I saw you did an Unraid build, and I’m super curious-how's the Unraid performance, and what are the drive/CPU temps under load, especially with a 10-gig card in there? Also, are the fans noisy, or will they need the magical touch of some Noctua fans to make it whisper quiet? My wallet’s weeping, but my rack is about to be chef’s kiss! @iLVTechCorner 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@whatwhat-777 Congrats on picking up the case! Your Proxmox server is going to look amazing in that rack. For Unraid performance, it's been rock solid. The drive temps in the hot-swap bays stay under 40°C, even during parity checks, and the SSDs inside the case hold steady at around 40°C, even at idle. They don’t fluctuate much since they’re positioned right behind one of the case fans, keeping them nice and cool. I haven’t added a 10-gig card yet, but it's something I’m considering down the line-so stay tuned for that! On the fans, I originally thought about upgrading to Arctic P12 Max fans, but the airflow has been great so far. I might swap them out eventually, but it'll probably be for aesthetics (maybe some RGB to keep the blue theme) rather than for noise or airflow. Also, I’m thinking about swapping the Noctua L9i for the BeQuiet SlimRock 2 since I have it lying around and could probably sell the L9i more easily. Just an idea I’m playing with! Your rack IS going to be chef’s kiss, can’t wait to hear how it all turns out! Thanks again for the support!

    There is no point on getting T CPU. Power consumption idling is the same, but they cost more and perform less. For people reading, considering ignorance spread more rapidly than information: TDP mean Thermal Design Load and even if correlated to power consumption, it doesn't indicate the real power consumption, either idling or full load. There is NO need to buy T CPU, both T and non T CPU idles at the same wattage and home server generally idles 99% of the time. T CPU are capped on TDP, because mean to be used on very small PC that don't have space for big heat sink, like 1L PC. T CPU are generally made from defective CPU, that can't reach normal target, so when you buy a T CPU, you are buying a defective CPU. T CPU are limited on max wattage and so frequency and boost, so to complete a task they need much more time than a normal non T CPU, that mean that during load or spike, a T CPU would consume more than a non T, because it would need much more time to complete that task, and we all know that most Intel tech are available to help the CPU completing a task as quick as possible, before going on idle state, that considering that both T and non T idle at the same wattage. So don't buy T CPU, they are OEM only, you can buy them only without tray, heat sink, paper and box; because Intel don't sell them to customer, they are always used, and they come from other prebuilt PC. They generally cost a lot more, and have less than half the performance of a normal one. There is no point on getting T CPU. Power consumption idling is the same, but they cost more and perform less. As for the rest of the build, OP doesn't say what is the use case, but for a NAS and some docker, that's an overkill and extreme build. A dual/quad core CPU would be plenty, 8GB of ram are enough, it would be better getting a cheaper MB too, no need for a dedicate heat sink, the stock Intel one is fine, no need for an expensive cooler on a M2 SSD. No need for a dedicated GPU on a system like that, where if the need is for HW transcoding, the iGPU on this CPU is much more powerful, can't even compare the performance, what a waste of money in general. Get a smaller PSU too, it's a NAS, 100W with all HDD running, 10W idling, a 300W PSU is fine.

    • @iLVTechCorner
      @iLVTechCorner 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks for your detailed insights! I appreciate your perspective on the T CPUs. I picked up the i5-13500T at a very low price, which made it an attractive option for my build. While I understand the concerns about power consumption and performance, the main reason for the switch was to achieve lower thermals since I struggled to find a cooling solution that would fit in the Jonsbo N3 and effectively cool a 12700K. I want to clarify that I’m not recommending the 13500T in this video; I’m simply sharing that it’s the part I’m using in my setup. For the rest of the build, besides the motherboard-which I also got a great deal on-the parts are mostly spare components from previous gaming builds that I already had. You're right that for many use cases, a simpler setup with a dual or quad-core CPU would be sufficient. I get that this is a topic that can stir up some strong opinions, but at the end of the day, we’re all just trying to find what works best for our own setups. My build might be overkill for a basic NAS and docker setup, but since I’m using spare parts I didn’t purchase anything else for this build besides the CPU and motherboard. I enjoy experimenting and pushing the limits a bit. I’ll definitely keep your points in mind as I continue to refine my setup, and I hope others find the discussion helpful as well! If anyone has questions or wants to share their thoughts, feel free to jump in!
