  • Hey guys,
    Join Darwin (Darwin on the Trail) and me as we continue to hike the CDT SOBO (Continental Divide Trail South Bound) through the Bob Marshall Wilderness and Scapegoat Wilderness. We encounter amazing views, tough climbs, the epic Chinese Wall, and even a space cabin?
    Enjoy!

    Could you do a video on cold soaking - specifically what works nutritionally, how long to soak for, how you can minimize food packaging, and the other benefits. Thanks.

      Maybe it’s not Mylar then but that’s what I was told. The material is supposed to be “highly resistant” to heat to keep the wood cabin from starting on fire.

    So I saw visually a comparison between your tent and Darwins, both from Zpacks. I am about ready to order your tent, the Hexamid with netting. Can you share your impressions about how Darwin's tent is different? Did you return wishing you had the larger tent? Yes - No? Thanks Rick

    • @juicehikes5436
      @juicehikes5436  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Rick, mine actually isn't the Hexamid. It's the Pocket Tarp with doors, I added the Sea to Summit nano netting after I got the tarp. I like that the bug netting is removable when bugs aren't a concern to give more of that open air feel. The Hexamid is very similar but the bug net is sewn in. I guess it depends on how tall you are if you are deciding between the two. The pocket tarp is lighter and more minimal. I'm 6'1 and I fit in the Pocket Tarp but if you want more livable space and an integrated bug net/floor the Altaplex (Darwin's tent) is a good option.

      Hey Guitar Hiker! The Bob and Scapegoat were super tough. I think he used KT tape on his schins because he got pretty tore up through the thick overgrowth and blow down. Thanks for tuning in!

      @@juicehikes5436 For sure looked like some tough sections. But beautiful mountainous terrain! That's what its all about. The CDT in general looks intimidating! To me anyways. Very sad to see what the fires have done in some of those sections. Where i live in upstate NY near southern tip of the Adirondacks we have been getting more rain here than i have seen up here in years.! Its weird cause its near polar opposite out west lately. I will be praying for you guys this year! Look forward to seeing your next adventure! Thanks for the reply! Stay safe! Hike on!

    Why do the two oatmeals in the jar separately? Saving one for later, or is it a water measurement thing?

    • @juicehikes5436
      @juicehikes5436  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      By using the two oatmeal pouches individually you don't have to do any dishes before you hit the trail. It just speeds things up a bit.

    How did you like the Bob Marshall? Was it beautiful? Did you see any bears, wolves, elk, moose or mountain lion?

    • @juicehikes5436
      @juicehikes5436  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Bob was amazing! Tough trail with the blowdowns and overgrowth but it was great. We didn't see much for wildlife, 1 small black bear as we were hitching into town but no wolves, elk, moose or mountain lions. Lots of sign for all the above but sometimes you just aren't in the right place at the right time. We likely had a moose right next to us the blew up the forest running away from us but it was so thick we never actually saw it.

I've got one on order for 2022 since I like the Pocket Tarp so much. Check it out! zpacks.com/products/altaplex-tarp-w-doors?aff=60

    Ok, so I get not taking off your shoes if it's wet and they're going to get soaked anyway, rain, multiple crossings, etc. But at the beginning of a day? I don't understand...

    • @juicehikes5436
      @juicehikes5436  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It's pretty easy to hurt your feet if you cross without some sort of protection. Wet feet really isn't a big deal, keep hiking and they dry out. Take your shoes and socks off at lunch (or any stop) and let your feet breath. Pretty standard protocol. I had zero blisters or foot issues and we hiked with wet feet every day for an average of 27 miles per day.

    • @firemarshaldil
      @firemarshaldil 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@juicehikes5436 interesting. Personally I grew up off a rocky creek like the crossing you showed, we always went out without shoes, so I guess I never thought about people potentially hurting their feet from it. Thanks for the info.

    • @martharunstheworld
      @martharunstheworld 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      A good way to keep from getting blisters, even from wet feet is to wear Injinji socks. I've done a ton of ultras where we crossed creeks and rivers early and then had to continue running through the day and night and my feet did pretty well! Also, Squirrel Nut Butter helps a lot!
