    2:09 Fun fact, I call Imperialdramon "Imperi-ahl-dramon" because I'm Brazilian, and in the Brazilian dub they say "Imperi-ahl-dramon", so I never realized that I say the name in the wrong way until now.
    Sorry for any writing errors

    Definetly not the same but when Tri first came out and there was a lot of negativity around Meicoomon and it’s digivolitions I thought Meicrackmon was just people making fun of the design/name I didn’t realizing until significantly after Tri finished that Meicrackmon was the real name lol.

    Regarding Susanoomon, the crux is that in Japanese, it would be written with the kana (syllables) "su" "sa" "no" "o". Putting an "o" kana after a kana that ends in "o", like "no" in this case, essentially makes the "o" kana function as vowel extender.
    There are a few ways to indicate this in transliteration. One option is to simply spell it a "Susanoomon" or "Susanoumon" (which is also a valid option), but for those who aren't familiar with Japanese phonology, it can make them assume that the "oo" or "ou" is supposed to be pronounced like the vowel in the word "blue".
    Another option, and my personal favorite, is to spell it with a macron over the "o" to indicate a lengthened vowel: "Susanōmon".
    And a third option is how I've seen the localized version of _Naruto_ handle it: an apostrophe, making it "Susano'o", which is... an interesting choice 🤔, since I can easily see it making people assume there's supposed to be glottal stop in his name (basically, "Susan-'uh oh'-mon").
    Also, regarding Ajatarmon, the common pronuncation _is_ *mostly* correct, apart from the fact that in the Finnish language (Ajatarmon is named after Ajatar, a spirit in Finnish folklore), emphasis comes on the first syllable: "UH-yuh-tar-mon".

    This is definelty less of me pronouncing a name wrong and more of my brain making the wrong connections. But in Frontier there are these Honeybeemon who are fans of Ranamon, but my brain makes the arbitrary connection between the dub name fanbeemon and the fact that they were her fans so my brain just goes “ah yes Ranamon’s fans of course they were fanbeemons,”

    I actually prefer the way you pronounce Imperialdramon. The "correct" pronunciation is kinda start and stop: You have to say "imperial", stop, then "dramon", wheras "Imperi-ail-dramon feels like it flows better as one word.

    Personally, even though I know Mikemon is supposed to be "Me-Kay" I only see it as "Mike" like the guys name. To the point that as a kid I was very confused to learn that Mikemon evolves into the very feminine Beastmon/Bastemon

    I saw that Mandjtv vid a while back, it's a good video and I'm glad it inspired you to make this video.
    the Imperaldramon one makes sense. I think with my American English speaking I pronounce it more as Im-Pier-Ee-Uhl-Dra-Mon with the "al" part of the name sounding more like the end of words like crackle or giggle.
    I can see the Betelguese origin for Betelgammamon, though in watching the video I had the thought of "what if it's just a weird corruption of battle and it's more meant to be Battlegammamon, and that's where the beht-uhl pronunciation at least partly comes from, as well as the alternate pronunciation of the star."
    It makes sense you won't say the opposite of Positivemon's actual name, I'm pretty careful with that sort of thing too. Like you I'm fine saying Mega and stuff like that, but when it begins with an "n" I'm much more careful about it.
    Yeah, I agree, I will always say Agumon Bond of Courage and not Bond of Bravery, even if Courage and Bravery are synonyms.
    While it is indeed based on a Centaur, I'm more used to the Sen-Tar-Oo-Mon pronunciation because of the Anime. Like my mind registers it as the word Centaur but with an extra u at the end.
    I remember the dub saying Drimogemon more like Dri-Moh-Geh-Mon where the mo is pronounced like the word mole or moat, and not like the Dri-Mah-Geh-Mon pronunciation you went with in the video where you're pronouncing it more like the word mom or mock.
    Besides all that though, I can see where you get the pronunciations for the rest of them and and would probably pronounce them the same way. I don't really have anything to say about them beyond that.

    Speaking of names, I hope you will cover Digimon naming etymology and the multiple names of Digimon, including Appmon. I figured that it will help clear out the confusion. For example, I always spelled Sakusimon as Sakusimon or say Scopemon instead of Scorpmon, or in terms of Digimon, Dagomon instead of Dragomon as it is based on Dagon, the Lovecraftian entity.

    I guess it was more about less mouth movement as getting to the "o" you can do the hard "g" without moving your jaw and go right to the "e" after.

    I think part of the reason that Pokemon never had localization arguments is because it took root in American and more broadly western culture in such a way that many people just accept how it was established in the US. While Digimon remains more niche and some of the dub changes are either more bizarre or more scatter shot in consistency.
    One of the biggest oddities being that Tai and Kari have a completely different family name in the dub, while the others are kept the same Japanese surname. And while they were all given more English sounding names, they were based on their original names anyway.
    I'm having trouble putting it into proper words but it feels like Pokemon changed everything more radically but did it across the board with few exceptions while Digimon just isn't consistent and localization choices seem more arbitrary.

    • @lordofninjas1
      @lordofninjas1 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I can see that. My mind has always gone to more of a "Pokemon isn't seen as "real" Anime, while Digimon is" sort of reasoning. I guess you could say, in a similar sort of way to what you said, Pokemon is seen as more American whereas Digimon is seen as more Japanese, like people who don't know any better might say Pokemon is more like Avatar: the Last Airbender in the sense that it's a cartoon that's made in an Anime style and everything but is wholly made in America by Americans, if that makes any sense.
      I think too it has a lot to do with the names themselves. Like with Pokemon the Japanese names are often long or difficult or strange for English speakers, and even when they aren't they translate to goofy sounding names like Freezer, Thunder, and Fire (the Japanese names for Articuno, Zapdos, and Moltres) that are just commonly used words and such. Plus, at least in the English dub, Pokemon makes a concerted effort to use as little Japanese (and often times as little of any language other than English or foreign words that are somewhat common in English-speaking countries) as possible in the Anime and such and translates most names, signs, etc. either into English or in the case of signs into nonsense/gibberish symbols (aside from some Pokemon names like Entei, Raikou, and Suicune, or like Mew which is essentially its Japanese name and is pronounced the same, just spelled differently so whoever is reading it will pronounce it the same way, just using letters and such they understand), and because of that there likely isn't as much of a ferver around which is the proper names to use. Whereas while in Digimon there are English sounding names and such used, they also use a lot more Japanese and other languages in the dub, so people are more apt to lean into wanting to use the Japanese names and such, if that makes any sense. Like imagine if the leads in Digimon Adventure 01 were names like Thomas, Matt, Sarah, Mimi, Izzy, Joe, Timmy, and Carrie, and their partners were named Dinomon, Furmon, Birdiemon, Ivymon, Ladybugmon, Nessiemon, Batmon, and Catmon, and they had to fight Draculamon, had Digimon gone more in that direction with their dubbing and such I would bet that it would be seen in a similar boat to Pokemon.
      I guess in a sense I'm saying more or less the same things you are, just using different words and examples and stuff.

    • @metageek7878
      @metageek7878 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @lordofninjas1 fair, though your reasoning also reminds me how Digimon is expressly set in Japan in every story. The first 4 pokemon regions are based on Japan but ultimately it's a fictional world entirely with geography that might be based on real life but as far as an American audience knows without being told, each pokemon region is a world apart from ours. In Digimon adventure, Myotismon expressly attacks Japan, and we get real locations like Odaiba.
      So changing Shatoshi to Ash isn't a big deal, it's not actually set in Japan technically. But changing Taichi to Tai, and Hikari to Kari etc. is kinda like if I said my name is Randy and I got called Ramundo by Spanish speakers. It can be a nickname but isn't technically correct.
      Side note since you mentioned Myotismon and Gatomon, weirdly I'd say their Japanese names make more sense.
      Vamdemon, aka vampire demon.
      Tailmon. I kinda get why they changed it to Gatomon since it sounds better than Catmon and Tail is super generic.
      The real question is why it wasn't originally Nekomon or Mewmon or Nyanmon or something like that.

      @@metageek7878 yeah, the setting probably has a lot to do with it too, though I wouldn't say that's entirely it either as people still have debate over Japanese vs English names for other Anime set in fictional worlds, like Yugioh for instance, people still argue whether to use characters English or Japanese names and Yugioh is set in fictional locations as well with places like Domino City or Duel Academy, or fictionalized versions of real world locations/time periods like ancient Egypt, the far future, the Multiverse, etc.
      I apologize if there was some confusion, I wasn't saying people find the Japanese Digimon names weird or confusing or anything, I said that about the Japanese Pokemon names. I agree, Vamdemon does work better than Myotismon (unless you're a scientist who knows that Myotis is the scientific name for a Genus of bats). Gatomon was probably used because many English speakers, at least here in America, know that Gato is Spanish for cat. I think they avoided Mewmon because of the Pokemon Mew (its English name and Japanese name sound the same and are just spelled differently), Nekomon was probably avoided in English because many don't know the connection to cats and Neko and probably because there's a candy called Necco's and they may have not wanted confusion/potential copyright infringement with that, and Nyanmon was probably avoided in English for the same reason of people not knowing about its connections with cats (and Nyan Cat didn't exist then). I assume Japan probably went with Tailmon because her tail is important because it has the ring on it and the creators wanted people to pay attention to that and stuff.

    • @metageek7878
      @metageek7878 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @lordofninjas1 I guess the tail ring is a big part of her design... I still prefer Gatomon... Although I prefer the Japanese MegaloGrowlmon instead of WarGrowlmon, it's more unique. Point is case by case.
      Back on pokemon though... I definitely think that localizing the names of pokemon for English was a good call.
      Lots of gen one have English names in Japanese but... The Eeveelutions in particular are so much better in English imo with the Eon suffix.
      In Japanese it's Booster, Showers and Thunders for the original 3... Which is even more odd considering Zapdos.
      Honestly I could go on a million tangents on this topic

    • @lordofninjas1
      @lordofninjas1 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@metageek7878 while I agree Megalogrowlmon does sound cool, I can understand why they didn't go with it in English, mainly because of the term megalomaniac. They likely didn't want that sort of negative connotation applied to a creature in a show who's audience largely consists of children, especially one that's the partner of one of the leads. Not to mention there would probably also be the "why does it have Mega in it's name if it's not a Mega Level" thing like what happened with Megakabuterimon.
      Yeah, the first Eeveelution names are better in English than Japanese. Imagine playing a video game or watching a cartoon and the protagonist is battling against a creature named Booster or Showers, Flareon and Vaporeon are way more cool sounding names and make them way easier to identify and such.

    Super fun video! The localisation really is a mess. I swear it was Dinohumon in Dawn/Dusk, but honestly they've been so inconsistent with a lot of names. I like switching between dub and sub names too, just depending.
    I think I still get WezenGammamon wrong sometimes. Tlalocmon stumps me as a Texan who had to learn about Aztec and other cultures in history class. Oh and the Devas like Vikralamon and Zhuqioamon I struggle with.

    I know it costs nothing to be kind, specially because the digimon team is rather small and the new digimon are added in chunks as needed instead of in bulk; but honestly, they do need to streamline and formalize a process for their character creation, specially because this problem has been recurring for over 20 years.
    Just have the designer of the monster write down the source of the name and add that to the reference book entry. Ideally that information would be public, but even if it is internal use only, it would help localization SO MUCH. The west has been importing anime for over 30 years now, we should have already moved past mixing Ls and Rs in words.
    One that trips me up all the time is Biyomon, because I've my entire life heard it being said as "Piyomon", even when it was said as a B. I can never remember if the P is the japanese and B is the english dub or if it is the other way around.
    Speaking of which, the way they're dealing with Tsukaimon and Sukamon's names now where it is Tukaimon and Scumon continues to trip me up.

    Voltaboutamon makes me mad at Capcom for Nibelsnarf's name, if Bandai Namco can name a Digimon "Face Mask" mon with 2 Italian words, they could've named Nibelsnarf something that doesn't sound like a cutesy nickname for the worst Thundercats character. They were going to call it Boccovore, or Mouth Eater, which is way cooler and way more menacing despite seemingly nonsense in Italian

    Something funny that I've noticed with this video and other youtubers with the same problem is that english makes the pronunciation harder for its speakers with this kind of names, I'm spanish and all of these names seem pretty obvious because they sound as they are read, so for example, if I read Mikemon I pronounce it as Mikemon, just as It's written, but with an english pronunciation it would be need to be written as Maikmon to be read as the name Mike with mon at the end (in spanish), anyways, loved the video

    Also fun fact, I have been calling Ordinemon "or-dee-neh-mon" because I've learned italian when I was a kid, but most of all, the Latinamerican dub of Frontier called Lucemon "lu-che-mon" as if it was in italian/latin.... sometimes. some times they would call them "luzmon" for entire storyarcs, then change.
    Also Cherubimon was called "ker-pee-mon" for some reason.
    But out of all the weird dubisms I can't get out of my head is Paildramon. The same dub either misnamed it "ledramon", or the CRT TV speakers made it sound muffled enough to be seem like that.
    It's wild the sort of things the dubs we grow up with prime us to.

    I've actually always pronounced it ImperiAHLdramon too, but that's because as a kid I didn't realize it was supposed to be Imperial. Similar to how the previous Lead Mega's were METALgarurumon and WARgreymon, so when it first debuted I assumed it's name was Impaildramon, like an EMPeror Paildramon, which made sense since the former Digimon Emperor was half the associated tamers for him. When I realized I read it wrong later, I don't think I adjusted the pronunciation of the A, I just added an "eri" into the middle. This was back when it was first releasing weekly in the US on FOX Kids, so I couldn't exactly check the internet and the games weren't really voiced so I didn't have a way to cross check things.

    ZephaGAHmon is probably the right way, going off the katakana it's a GA sound not GE.
    It's also worth noting, that the Zepha part of Zephagamon's japanese spelling is exactly the same way they render Zephyr, so it probably should've been Zephyrgamon in english, which I like the sound of better.
    In develpoment it was just literally Zephyrmon, but I assume they added the ga to the end to avoid confusion with Shutumon's English name. But at that point I think they should've used the full Zephyr Galemon, giving Galemon a full Greymon style line up of names.
