Taveuni Sunset Snorkel 4K

After hiking for most of the day Michelle and I decided to go snorkeling. We were always planing to get one more snorkel in before leaving Taveuni at 2pm the next day. The hotel manager (Mari) who helped us plan most of our transportation let us know that the afternoon ferry to Savu Savu was canceled and we would now have to take the 8am one. We made the decision to spend the rest of the day snorkeling. Down the steep driveway of Makaira across the one road that circles the entire island of Tavueuni if you head left are a few wooden steps that take you to the most gorgeous little strip of beach. Michelle and I spent most of our free time exploring the ocean from that little strip of sand. When you first enter the water you have to swim over a grassy patch of sandy bottom. After the grass there is what Roberta (the owner of Makaira) calls the bone yard. The bone yard is made of thousands of dead pieces of coral pushed there by the large storms that have hit Taveuni. After the bone yard you are greeted by huge table sized coral stacked on top of each other. There are small canyons and swim throughs between the bommies. I spent most of my time Free diving down looking for anemones and clown fish. As you swim out farther there is a drop off where you can swim down fairly deep. the deepest I swam down to (at this location) was 45 feet. After Swimming around until the sun came down we headed back to our bungalow to get dressed for dinner. Michelle and I had such a good time at Makaira I dream of going back there one day.
