speaking of snot... he looks just like a guy I went to high school with, except he had glasses and was much more of a cringy dork than snot. freaked me out when I noticed that resemblance. I always liked that classmate of mine, but man, he was sleazy and weird... also didn't smell very good

Like How Stan tries to do what he thinks is right but goes about it in the wrong way. He is a well-meaning psychopath. Stan has Daddy issues because it was just him and his mom when he was growing up. Stan used to be a geek but he got really buff. Or how Hayley used to be Happy Hayley until she saw a Seal beat to death on tv. Hayley is basically Stan but a liberal. I would argue the family guy cast has some depth too. Peter bullies Meg because his sister bullied him. Not as complex as the Simpsons characters but there is some depth.
Also, his original design is too glaringly different from everyone else’s. I saw other comments say this too, so I’m glad it wasn’t only me who thought his original design didn’t fit in with the other characters designs.

Klaus and Meg are only very rarely a part of the overall plot in any given episode. But, they do set the tone for what happens on the peripheral and that is what a lot of the audience pays the most attention to. That's what makes both of them so relatable. They're both an introvert's dream character even though their personalities are also very different.
Meg is still more hated between them two lol. You're right though Klaus character aged better overall which is why I am a huge advocate of recent 3-4 seasons.
Harry Potter is 100% a weirdo and probably a nerd in the mortal world. The movie series shows this through the story of Snape. Harry only became "someone" due to his scar/series of events that kept him alive that night while his parents where murdered. Harry Potter low-key would have been a average student with money if his parents didn't die that night.
American Dad set itself up for success. Family Guy is dry because of it's lack of character development and lack of characters in general. But American Dad has Roger which basically grants them infinite characters plus the continuity is much better. Only flaw I caught on to American Dad is that in season 1 Roger discovers he can wear disguises to go out in public. He discovers this in season ONE but through out the series we see Roger being in a part of history while in disguise. So how did he do that when he barely realized he could dress up in season 1. Other than that American Dad is the best animated series in Human history
All the characters in American Dad are fully fleshed out and having Roger the alien have all his different persona's just gives the show a ton of creative freedom, they can pretty much write any type of story and Roger is the perfect character to bridge any difficult connections withing the story arc.
Hard not to approve of Steve these days. Still profoundly nerdy but not an obvious caricature. I mean, come on. He's got a raging Oedipus complex and acts like a toddler. Remember his "going bananas" stint? Or even in the last season when he wakes up Francine to ask permission to start playing early? It's those little things that really make a character great. But yes, this show is vastly, vastly better than the shambling fart that is Family Guy.
Tbh American dad became a good show when Seth stopped being a part of its production. He does voice work still, but doesn't write it if I remember right.
Family Guy felt like it didn’t evolve in terms of comedy and it felt like Seth McFarlan tried to interject musicals and singing while have some focus on Stewie and Brain’s relationship which felt contrived and unusual. American Dad really dives into the characters and the stories that lend a lot of comedy and funny moments. Its not stuck to the “remember when I did XYZ” cut away template that was heavily used in family guy and they’re free to explore contemporary topics.

I absolutely love American Dad. Steve as a character really speaks to me because I see a lot of myself in that character. Not only do we share a name, but our teenage years were very similar. The rest of the family mirrors my own too, and I think that's the main reason I love this show so much. Not only is it clever, silly, and entertaining, it also reminds me of growing up. Steve is only not my favorite character because Roger is my all time favorite animated character. The two of them really work best together though, like in the R&B video you mentioned as well as the classic Wheels and the Legman.

My favorite thing about American Dad is how they write side characters. From the Golden Turd to the birds that lived in the birdhouse Steve builds, I usually love when American Dad puts the spotlight on someone outside of the main family
The old character model of Steve Smith looks like an alien, like the average everyday nerd doesn't look like that we actually have a good looking body from a certain point of view.
Steves’s face in the current cartoon looks also more squared out, in part by the different glasses. Not extremely squared, but enough to look less dorky. I know too well how even just the style of glasses frames is enough change not only a face’s perceived profile but perceived personality. Different frames lend a different kind of energy.

They give much better complete storylines for the faithful fans. Now we know how and why Roger can speed up time through a hilarious episode where he played Genny, Steve's fake cousin who dated Snot lol. It makes it 10000% more funny knowing the truth when Roger does something in a flash, knowing all he did was speed up time to be an asshole... Also they covered why Roger likes to burn Klaus so much. It's because he makes high quality paintings of Klaus's emotions and sells them meaning he set a market for this since like season 2 lol. Everything in American Dad comes to a full circle expect why Steve can be geeky in one episode and Mr Cool who can talk to girls in another episode.
I can see why they made steve like that one of the most popular shows of the time was the big bang theory so they pretty much cut and pasted the needs from that show.

In his original iteration Steve is way back in the 1970’s “Women’s” glasses, ‘70’s short shorts, t-shirt. Not workable for the times.
