Im from Jamaica and I attended Columbus Preparatory. I was one of the female students. I clearly remembered that the filming took all day because we (students) had a hard time getting it together. I had no clue who Shirley Bassey was and didn't understand what the big hooplah was about. I was 9 yrs old. I was also annoyed about the fact that i had to march up to the school's church holding hands with a much younger boy while my friends were with our age mates. Lol ...Proud of this treasured memo
Totally agree, there are singers than there is Dame Shirley Bassey in a class all by herself. She is so beautiful in every way. I think her amazing talent and warm personality and emotions come through in every song she sings.
My mother told me that this is her favourite rendition of 'Ave Maria' ever - Shirley Bassey singing the song out in Jamaica with a bunch of school kids in a choir
Dearest Shirley this one I chose for my late husbands funeral we went together to see you most Wonderful concerts very special times for us Shirley Thank. You for those wonderful nights never will be forgotten. Bless you Shirley love you and miss you 😘 Dee xxxxx
WOW, that was bloody amazing. She is in all honesty on of the most amazing and unique voice I've ever heard in my life. Everything was perfect from beginning to the end.
w...ow....I have to say this is my favourite version of ave maria! It is like a powerful flame of air that breathes thru the church. It does not shatter glass but it lights all the candles...that is what I call breath of fresh air!
A powerful song Shirley Bassey sung ave Maria a very high notes and difficult. Beautiful rendition l touch and I was dismayed my I eyes was Fallin tears cause of the magic of the delivering the sounds of emotions.... Congratulations Shirley Bassey I am your fans all the way from the Philippines. 💖🇵🇭🇵🇭🇵🇭
Me too! Was so lucky to meet her in person when I was working aboard the cruise/liner ship QE2! Never in my wild dreams come to my mind, I'll be seeing/meeting my favorite singer/warbler/diva in flesh!
No. It's edited. Actually she broke several times and had to start over and over. We were all hot and falling asleep. But still great performance at the end.
So lovely. I love how Shirley Bassey ends...got me crying. I always love this song, and I would listen to Barbra Striesand's version. Both are so great. What a lovely video. The children are so cute. Wish they would show a program of this caliber on TV today, would get very high ratings. Love it!!!
Shirley Bassey is a one of a kind and while she did not have an acting career, her variety show was a 100% quality production with a grueling schedule. She deserves every honor that can be bestowed on an artist in the performing arts. I rank Shirley up there with Elvis in terms of their ability to take someone else's songs and make them even better. A globally star in every way.
Marie,,Thank-you very much for giving us your personal insights. Some people have contended that Ms. Bassey is the ultimate DIVA and sometimes isn't very patient with others when working, but your personal insights say just the opposite. It also gives people a clue of how much time it takes to put together something like this. It's certainly not a just a quick 4 minute song, then out the door she goes. Thanks again, Regards, Scot
Shirley Bassey, na minha opinião é a Maior cantora do mundo. Adoro Shirley Bassey. Sou fã desta brilhante cantora desde da década de 60. Ela é incrível, não tem pra ninguem. Parabéns e parabéns. Que continue nos sucessos para sempre Shirley você é demais 😃😍
I have been a Shirley fan since i first heard her voice [as i love you[ the the voice that would dominate the rest of my life to date;;;; not realising who she was at the time i met her boyfriend Kenneth Hume not knowing who he was'' took me to his flat in Chelsea for drinks with a friend of mine /1961/62 i just remember him saying to me after a while that we would have to go now as he was exspecting a lady who was going to be a big star ,,it was of course Shirley .Glad to be able to say .
I went to St Richard's Primary and was a part of this extraordinary event with this internationally acclaimed singing superstar . Like Marie , as kids , we just did not know what the big deal around this was , but looking back it was a beautiful occasion. I remember Ms Bassey being very patient with the kids - you could tell she felt a special connection to us . For the St Richard's students it was a day trip out of Kingston for the day and crossing the dreaded ' flat bridge ' to get there .
Richard Grant Amen Richard. Dreaded flat bridge is never fun. Remember us having to do this over and over and over until I slept soundly until sister cicelia woke me up and warned me. Dwl

When Shirley started in the business she was given the option to either take classical lessons and become a classical singer or go into POP. As Shirley was born into poverty, she chose the easiest route to gain her freedom. But, many classical singers have praised Shirley over the years, and said she would have made a great Alto. She classifies herself as a Classical POP artist; Shirley always hated the word "BELTER" when it was applied to her. lol. But, she is able to sing a soft lullaby OR belt to the rafters, and is able to add or remove vibrato and adjust her timber based on the style of song she is singing. Here is another example that I just uploaded: Shirley performs the song, Climb Ev'ry Mountain then follows up with Let Me Sing - And I'm Happy. One shows the operatic Shirley and the second shows the POP playful side of Shirley: studio.th-cam.com/users/videon5OOWegsFRw/edit. She has or had a 3.6 octave range from low Alto to the high Mezzo Soprano notes in full belting voice. The great Jessye Norman attended one of Shirley's concerts and asked her afterword, "How Do You Do It"? Shirley asked, what do you mean? Jessie said that you can sing one big number right after another without a break and lift your voice to the rafters every time. Most classical artists must take time off between numbers. Shirley thought that was such a wonderful complement from Ms. Norman. Regardless of if Shirley likes the word "Belter" or not, this is what her fans expect of her when they attend her concerts. The Big Numbers, and she always gave her best!
it is an awful pity that so many videos are cut off after the last Note and the applause is not heard. The applause for Julie would have uplifted us more
Um, whether it was in the 70s or later....if you have a TV station coming to record you at your school, of course you are not going behave like a hooligan unless it is some dancehall video which this wasn't. Any child regardless of location has the propensity to be respectable given the right motivation.
Unbelievable, oh so heavenly;
this woman can sing the phone book and still manage to bring me to tears.
God bless!
