The allegory of the cave, also known as the myth of the cave, is considered the most famous allegory in the history of philosophy. It is a metaphorical explanation, made by the Greek philosopher Plato about the situation in which the human being finds himself with respect to knowledge. In it, Plato explains his theory of how we can grasp the existence of the two worlds: the sensible world (known through the senses) and the intelligible world (which is a matter of pure knowledge, without the intervention of the senses). The scope of action of this allegory is wide. Thus, for example, it is also applicable to represent two types of "realities"; the first refers to "that which is happening" while the second refers to "that which I get to know" about "what is happening". For convenience, we can call the first one "Reality" (with capital letters), and the second one "reality" (with lower case letters). By the way, "reality" is always subjective, personal, and we humans have always wanted to shorten the existing gap between "reality" and "Reality", which is not strange, since such an eagerness is typical of all living beings. The limited capacity to capture and process information from the environment conspires against the aforementioned purpose. Added to this is the implicit bias in the particular meaning given to the captured information. In effect, the meaning of what is perceived arises as a consequence of processing the perceived information using "life experience" as a reference, a life experience that is always limited, and certainly "very personal". Although the "dimension" of Reality is immeasurable, living beings are eminently practical; in order to survive they do not need to know the full extent of Reality. Human beings, making use of Reason, focus our attention on a tiny segment of reality in order to try to make that reality a utilitarian correlate of that segment of Reality of which that which is the subject of knowledge is a part. After this introduction, it is easy to understand that Harari and Bialik's effort aims at achieving a utilitarian reading of that segment of Reality in which social events take place. At the same time, it is easy to recognize that they are navigating in uncharted waters. Indeed, understanding social dynamics requires managing information that neither of these two characters possesses. Thus, for example, when Harari postulates "good will" to "order the social panorama", he seems to be unaware that social dynamics depend on a series of factors that need to be previously known in order to postulate alternatives for action. While it is true that we cannot expect to know all the factors involved, for the sake of effectiveness we can focus our efforts on trying to know what the main factors are. For this purpose, the study of the history of the evolution of life on the planet is an important tool. Thus, for example, a review of the history of evolution shows us the root of what we call "Power", and what an important role Power has played and plays today in shaping society. We do not need access to "the ultimate truth" to improve our effectiveness. Yes, we can be more effective and efficient if we make an adequate use of Reason, starting by focusing our Attention on the search for "the main variables" that condition a particular segment of the present, past or future Reality.
Well, it is a very flowery speech. Are you just saying that human beings are limited in what they are capable of doing and subsequently comprehending in order to percieve enough to be effective and efficient in whatever their intend of achievement could be? Could we call it in short "experience"? And, then, for the rest of it "the application of such an experience"? If yes, here is my question: Do you think the experience is transferable, or not? And then, What do you think is a purpose of being if not gaining, understanding and accepting the experience?
Yuval and Maiyam, I respect both of you for this straightforward and open conversations for us to understand the bigger picture of the world and its political, historical and social settings that have changed and truth that exist at present.
I always appreciate Yuval’s insight on various aspects of our life and the novelty of his ideas. I guess simple explanation is likely to be true and complex problems generally have simple solutions, we just need to have a different perspective.
I’ve been enjoying Prof. Yuval Noah’s writings, and recently been delighted to have found his online lectures and presentations! His perspectives delight and inspire me!! Thanks and look forward to more of the sharing.
The hidden debate on religion was fascinating. Yuval was CLEARLY attacking Mayim's position (orthodox jew and phd in neuroscience) by opposing faith vs reason. He has this very simplistic, flawed, new atheist approach of "everything can be put into equation, rationality is a clear path". Yuval's thought experiment about putting a hat that detects irrational behavior is very telling of how he views the social layer. As Sam Harris he probably thinks that ethics can be mapped from facts, and thus robots would be ideal humans. Mayim views the social layer as comprised of irreducible social and ethical variables. She understands that factual truths about our brains don't optimize social interactions and ultimately well being in general. Yuval's equation is simply wrong.
His story about the hat was to show how technology could be used for the wrong reasons by politicians, dictators etc. he certainly doesn’t think robots would mahe ideal human,. Much of what he tallks about is the dangers in AI and while it will be make decisions affecting lives, it will never be a conscious entity withfeelings.
Both are wonderful speakers. I respect them. However, Mayim seems confused and she focused on superficial issues in her discussion. Yuval, on the other hand, appears very confident and talking from reference-based mature content.

Harari's arguments are par excellence.. Though it may seem weird to many.. But we should not forget..what the contemporaries have done with intellectual minds in the past.. Galileo, Copernicus, Aryabhatta, Gandhi.. n the list is endless...
I adore and respect Dr. Harari for his book “Homo Deus: A Brief History of Tomorrow” but I found it ironic that in this interview he was asking how come people can be very reasonable (I thought “logical”) in some intellectual areas of thought and then completely refuse to educate themselves in other areas. But then he seriously suggested that he would like to create/deploy some “device” ala browser ad blocker which would prevent him from learning “false news...” Isn’t it obvious that Dr. Harari would delegate to someone else to identify what “false” is, and attaching the device with someone else’s definitions of what false (and right vs. wrong) is to his brain, removes his ability to reject such false news logically?
This might be the first time I don't agree with a Yuval sentence. I think books and readings are still the number one tool to create and tell stories in the most powerful way and let the human imagination do his beautiful work.
I disagree with your notion , ask yourself ,how-many celebration and festivals are celebrating Films , and books , compare the audiences ! Listen to prof. To hear how many times they refer to movies to prove their points ! Many times !
@@nancymohass4891 Are you measuring which media is more powerful at story telling by how many festivals are celebrating said media and how much audience it got? Also, if you're looking for potential audience, internet and socials have much more audience than movies, even without festivals.

I love YNH and always love his conversations. Mayim Bialik is very nice but not in the same league as Yuval. I felt she didn’t answer questions directly and promoted herself continually.
Mayim is the first person that I felt could keep up with Yuval. Most sobering thought form Yuval, that it is not possible for the less developed world, to be brought up to the living standard of those of us living in the developed world. Would that be true, even if we abandoned trips to Mars and wasteful affluence?
Great discussion. I suggest: Professor Ryan Bishop at University of Southampton who has written extensively on The Oral tradition and how it has influenced our culture.
I've watched Big Bang Theory a few years ago. I didn't know that Mayim Bialik is a scientist. That's really wonderful. The fact that the producers of that tv show chose a person like her due to her background.
The other comment is that even when we think we are being 110% rational... we are not. Emotions guide our decisions, and that is what Phineas Gage case is all about. We can read the finding of Antonio Damasio about the somatic markers. This bring me to a quote from Lopez Rossetti, "we are emotional being that reason and to my own quote: "we are all believers", whether we admit it or not. It is all in the dose (Paracelso), the degree and the timing
Takeaways: Technology always has benefits and consequences When developing tech, imagine it in the hands of your worst enemy Best coders over the last decade solved the problem of how to get people to click on ads The planet could not currently survive if everyone lived like average Americans
Solution: Stop giving undeserved aid to the third world and stop allowing them to flood our already overpopulated countries. Keep our standard of living to ourselves.
I'm dumbfounded about the assertion that one can't shut off their prefrontal cortex?! This is the point of meditation, nitsches concept of Beyond Good and Evil, Jung talked about it. It the Heroes Journey with 1000 Faces that Joseph Campbell wrote about. It's like practicing shutting it off helps strengthen it and give us better control over our minds. There is certainly a danger on mental breakdown beyond the safety of current cultural personal mortality. Does the hero return like Jung or go insane like Nietzsche?
My first time with Mayim and I am staggeringly engaged with her charm, smile and intellect. But i hope her inate compulsion to you know to say "you know" is self improved...you know.
You know...........I am not a college graduate or anything of the like, but I do personally believe in certain absolutes which require us to give genuine thought and reason to and a large dose of faith as to who we choose to be as individuals and how we treat one another. That to do that one has to have a foundational base or core of proven truth that is relevant and to a certain respect, be therefore cooperative in treatment of our fellow man. No man is an island after all. This discussion is very, very good in that these two very likeable and highly educated people are speaking and talking WITH us instead of just AT us. I SO appreciate that! In such uncertain times, we need such discussions instead of the constant political and personal business of those in the entertainment world. Although I don't agree with everything said, I appreciate feeling that I'm "invited" to partake and reason with my fellow man on what's important to me, be he highly educated or just a sincere individual trying to make some sense of this world for themselves their family, their friends, their country.............the globe et al. God bless and keep us each safe and sane today and always. Sincerely...............

Yuval. My dad worked on cloning. He was already a doctor, so his dexterity with surgical tools was useful in the lab. His sole lab achievement allowed the research to receive funding and go on to eventual success. We were a Taiwanese family immigrated to US so he could do this. He is a good man, believes in democracy and righteousness, and yet once the research phase was done it’s out of his hands. The lab was focused on infertility but they knew it would lead to much more once the door into the human cell was unlocked. They celebrated of course. No one was gloom and doom. Hopefully this adds the necessary nuance you need to understand what goes on. I’m sure the same goes on all over the world. For today, You’d need a moral army that demands political change and then those human experimentation labs would be shut down. But it’s like you say, we’d fall behind. But hopefully people like my father wouldn’t go. Now imagine if all the countries were engaged in cold wars, striving to compete against their enemy countries? Hmm. Let’s hope like covid, one little “experiment” doesn’t escape the lab 😅 (sorry China).
It looks like the algorithm that controls our clicking preferences might be the responsible for the growing polarization in ideas, as the Internet is showing me what I want to see, what I agree with and what confirms what I think, narrowing my perspective
Critically viewing this interaction, it appears that Mayim prefers an ‘optimistic’ view of the world rather than a ‘realistic’ one that Yuval talked about to support her scientific answers to the many questions asked and this seems ironic in its very nature as one would expect a scientist and one who has been popular to work in the field of neuroscience to side with realistic and pragmatic understanding than simply an optimistic view of our world.
Yuval: It is very fascinating that people can hold very rational beliefs in some realms and lose all rational capacity in other very important domains of life Mayim: I hold a PhD in neuroscience, but I’m religious and do not vaccinate annually for the seasonal flu 😐
She is so inarticulate and scattered compared to him. I have trouble following her bouncing from idea to idea and back again, but he is very clear and concise.
Yuval Noah Harari, an Israeli professor of history, was born on 24 February, 1976 in Kiryat Ata City in Israel. Harari was raised in Haifa, which is the third largest city in Israel in a profane Jewish family with Lebanese and Eastern European origin. He attended the Hebrew University of Jerusalem from 1993 to 1998, where he specialized in medieval and military history. Harari later joined Jesus College, Oxford, where he completed his doctorate in 2002 (Harari np). He also attended postdoctoral studies in history in Yad Hanadiv, an Israeli philanthropic Foundation funded by the Rothschild family.
I admire Yuval`s very relatable and broad worldview in puting across his perspective on plausible scenarios to the dilemma of human biohacking..he breaks down complex matters to smooth and easily digestible bits to be understood by a global audience..truly a highly anlytical mind and breath of fresh air as opposed to humanity`s madness in pursuit of high technology..he is basically imploring us to have checks and balances , especially n the field of bio tech so as not destroy ourselves in the end..

This lady laughted irrespectfully listening Yuval's opinions..... didn't like that attitude. Was her huge Ego talking about her studies and education achievements?
Dude - Change equals increased risk. Change almost by definition equals more energy expenditure (to adapt to it) and a higher risk of this energy going to waste. Change equals increased uncertainty, always, without exception. Change equals unexpected outcomes, always. These four aspects of change alone make even the idea that having an _attitude_ towards change or a decision to make, completely wrongheaded. To ask these kinds of questions betrays a fundamental misunderstanding of the cost/benefit analysis made by every single living thing.
Delightful conversation - truth seeking PLUS. YNH is not at all ideological, in fact he is anti-ideological, anathema to dogmatists. He's just looking for truth and warning us, modestly, of possible threats to humankind's future well being. MB is indeed an ideal foil to him - smart, eclectic and articulate. And special words of praise for an excellent host, unobtrusively asking beautifully posed, pertinent questions to put the ideas of the two thinkers into sharper focus.
Thanks for this conversation. Sometimes my mind play with the thought : If the planet could talk or schedule the wishes for a better planet, what would it then tell us? We already have a lot of knowledge about the problems for the planet to struggle and now it seems the Earth is answering us. Is it time for a PLANET government ? Would that be an anthroprocene responsibility ? Would that give us a new frame of thinking ? I often think, when we talk about sustainability - the mindset need new stories to build new actions and societies. When we talk sustainability - the frame is still the economic growth, it is not what we need to do to serve the planet and all the species. How could we maintain the knowledge we already have and at the same time disrupt our daily way of living ?
Your version and acceptance of 'change' is not mine. I, like millions of my fellow humans, am very happy where I am, how I live etc, and don't want things to change.
Yes. But when your own comfort is chocking/suffocating someone else and their children, dont be surprised when you're attacked and changed by force. Imagine slave owners saying "I am comfortable as I am, so I refuse to let you and your children be free." Things don't usually bode well for comfort at others' expense for too long.
@@omowhanre I do not live in a time and place where that type of slavery exists, and thankfully, neither do you. I’m not saying there is no slavery around the world, of course there is, but that is down to the corrupt politicians. My heritage, language, beliefs, lifestyle etc are what I have ‘worked’ for, (and am happy with) and I don’t need some stranger telling me I need to change to suit their idea of what their life should be like. If you want change, start with yourself, then your family, then your friends, then your local community, then the larger community. Once you have the ideal community you should, in turn, have the ideal life. So, be happy with it and don’t expect a better life just because you want it, and think you have the right to take from mine. That is the very definition of jealousy, avarice, sadness & wrath - not a decent set of traits for any human being to have.
I think you misunderstood... change is inevitable. Hariri is actually saying that big changes i.e., Russian Revolution are often more fraught than more modest ones.
Loved this conversation..... Of course it is Yuval and Mayim , cannot expect anything shy of beautifully articulated thoughts, of how to take stock of human affairs, something we are lacking in the broader sphere globally!!!!
33:44 Hacking of the human brain and biology won't take place until we develop AGI, which in turn might be contingent on that hacking, leading to a classic catch 22. So this thesis needs to be taken with a grain of salt.
The “human touch” is our instinct to create. Music is now global. “Be One “ is no longer some esoteric Zen phrase. We can now (& better) entrain a sufficient amount of us, for long enough to serve our purpose as humanoids ... evolve!!
It's sad that Yuval is so uninformed about the Russian revolution. The more you study history, the more you see the nuances. His very "black and white" thinking about Communism is sadly indicative of his lack of perspective.
It's really strange, but I think the microwave was in development or maybe even available on a limited basis much earlier than it was to the average consumer. On the local college campus, where I coincidentally went to high school, there was this sandwich vending machine with an accompanying oven on the side. Amazingly, we could put those cold burgers in the oven for the prescribed 1 minute or so and they would be warmed up nicely. We thought that was really cool. But being teenagers, we didn't think much of it, other than, "That's cool. We can run over here and get a burger between classes and not be late." It had to be a microwave or a forerunner of it.

It’s mentioned in the Quran
Well, it is a very flowery speech.
Are you just saying that human beings are limited in what they are capable of doing and subsequently comprehending in order to percieve enough to be effective and efficient in whatever their intend of achievement could be?
Could we call it in short "experience"?
And, then, for the rest of it "the application of such an experience"?
If yes, here is my question:
Do you think the experience is transferable, or not?
And then,
What do you think is a purpose of being if not gaining, understanding and accepting the experience?

My thoughts exactly.
A lot of us we call it as being relatable. There are different speaker styles and ways of story telling.
I think both was amazing, but unfortunately people still evaluating woman less good than man every day.
Public figures with large followings have an enormous responsibility when putting their views on subjects that have such critical health issues
Even I am open minded person I do not agree that lies will make us go far .
Of course I know that imagination in life is needed , because that helps us to be more creative .
( Imaginations - yes
lies - not )
My respect to the lady .
I believe also that we all should have freedom of choice .
That what democracy is about .
Of course we all should have in life principles of moral behavior .

Agree 👏
I agree.
Reading = personal(open end to imagination)
Film = impersonal ( end to imagination as everything is set and projected)
I disagree with your notion , ask yourself ,how-many celebration and festivals are celebrating Films , and books , compare the audiences ! Listen to prof. To hear how many times they refer to movies to prove their points ! Many times !
@@nancymohass4891 Are you measuring which media is more powerful at story telling by how many festivals are celebrating said media and how much audience it got? Also, if you're looking for potential audience, internet and socials have much more audience than movies, even without festivals.
Agree
A very important discussion in this time...
I really love Harari !!I ❤💕💖
I am a fan of Mayim in everything she does, she is amazing and I want her to know that there are millions more fans that adore her. So don't let those idols make her feel bad they are just jealous.
That last answer from Yuval is GOLD!
I love YNH and always love his conversations. Mayim Bialik is very nice but not in the same league as Yuval. I felt she didn’t answer questions directly and promoted herself continually.

When Yuval speaks, the way you understand the world will definitely undergo a major repair!!!
"It's okay to ask questions" Yes, amazing that this is debated
That’s the content quality I was looking for 🙌
Great conversation and so much optimism. Thanks!

When developing tech, imagine it in the hands of your worst enemy
Best coders over the last decade solved the problem of how to get people to click on ads
The planet could not currently survive if everyone lived like average Americans
Sincerely...............
extremely impressive discourse. Yuval was good as usual but Mayim was very impressive !

People like Harari needs to have balanced view of the so called biases. People who see other peoples bias against their own truth are more biased. IMHO, seeing the truth inside each others bais is the balanced view.
What are the books behind the YNH? Anyone know? I only recognise one book, steven pinker enlightment now

Intelligent and compassipnate people are usually vegans
@@marialindgr1 Hitler was vegetarian.
@@deangah9220 i was going to mention hitler. I do not think the speaker would consider Hitler as compassionate. What you need to understand is that compassion towards animals do not necessarily translate to compassion towards fellow human beings. Hitler was a racist, so are many Hindu nationalists vegetarians etc. On the other hand, you can be a carnivore, but still be compassionate and considerate towards your own species and many other species as well. People who eat meat do not arbitrarily throw a stone at a cow or a sheep. Finally, intelligence and compassion are entirely different traits and do not need to coexist.

Yuval: It is very fascinating that people can hold very rational beliefs in some realms and lose all rational capacity in other very important domains of life
Mayim: I hold a PhD in neuroscience, but I’m religious and do not vaccinate annually for the seasonal flu 😐
I love and admire both of you. Greetings and blessings from Barcelona 🙏🏻😁❤️💕

My dear 'Blossom ' nice to see you. Mayem lots of love.
But who's the persons going to write the course 'Ethycs for coders'?
It seems to me that the quality of Yuval's thinking has dropped a few notches
Could you elaborate
I admire Yuval`s very relatable and broad worldview in puting across his perspective on plausible scenarios to the dilemma of human biohacking..he breaks down complex matters to smooth and easily digestible bits to be understood by a global audience..truly a highly anlytical mind and breath of fresh air as opposed to humanity`s madness in pursuit of high technology..he is basically imploring us to have checks and balances , especially n the field of bio tech so as not destroy ourselves in the end..

I LOVE Dr Yuval! Super cool dude I really enjoy his lectures and work.
Thank you, two of my favorite people to listen to.
So much mental clarity and brain power!
Two thumbs up 👍🏻👍🏻
More than just ok you have to ask questions. It’s our duty to question and have an open debate.
Yuval please come to nyc and sign some books when things get back to normal!
Gosh, who edited this?

It's really strange, but I think the microwave was in development or maybe even available on a limited basis much earlier than it was to the average consumer. On the local college campus, where I coincidentally went to high school, there was this sandwich vending machine with an accompanying oven on the side. Amazingly, we could put those cold burgers in the oven for the prescribed 1 minute or so and they would be warmed up nicely. We thought that was really cool. But being teenagers, we didn't think much of it, other than, "That's cool. We can run over here and get a burger between classes and not be late." It had to be a microwave or a forerunner of it.
Why do the camera angles always catch them nodding their head in agreement to Noah
