I am a bit of a freak as I get under the car fairly often and wipe it down, check for leaks and fasteners being tight, re-paint any chips or rust that is starting to develop on things, etc.
thanks for this it was most helpful. i adjusted the linkage on my vehicle and now all ok, i might add that i replaced the mountings before doing so. I used to have hassles selecting 1st gear especially. Inside the car I removed the gear lever cover and basically adjusted the linkage length until the lever was more centrally located. No worries now, all ok and selecting all the gears like a dream
I have an 85 Cabriolet and the gear shift itself is falling through the console, I have to pull it up and hold it while shifting. Is this the same issue ?
I have people say that but I am not that talented - I know less than most professionals in this area and I have limited ability to weld and paint but I like to learn and try new things. I don't want people to get the idea that I have everything figured out - I am learning every day - if I did this project over again it would go much smoother than this one went!
Hi . Yep very clean underneath ☺️ The problem I'm having is I keep hitting reverse rather than 1st. Very annoying when at a junction ☺️ and this is with a new geer shift repair kit. What's going on? Thanks
I always tell people to start with fresh motor motors and a proper setup of the engine position - without that you will struggle with the shifter setup.
way late on the comments, but I believe you have a 4 speed relay lever, which is longer than one for a 5 speed. seems you got things working though. I have watched many of your videos on this project and have enjoyed the journey.
Interesting. I just re-used the components from the GTI I acquired. That said, I upgraded the linkage to adjustable end-links which helped dial it in ....
Derek Spratt , some parts guy must have mixed that up on the previous owner. I saw the rod ends in the video, and was watching how they worked as I am gathering parts to make my own short shift and conversion to rod ends. If only my fuel pump had not retired Friday.... LOL
facing this problem as we speek... been at it all morning... actually my link is to short and the rubber is catching whr its suppose to be sliding... found an old one and i cut the end piece ... will weld it onto the other ball link and see what happens... 1st 3rd and 5th giving me crap... iv dont all the adjustments bt no luck... this is my last opinion... if not iwl bend the shaft too😅
Ah, yes, it is an iterative process - start by checking the side motor/transmission mounts - they die and cause the engine and trans to slip down and out of alignment relative to the front and rear mounts. Once that is fixed you can start to see where you need to adjust the shifter linkages.
glad to see your success. I'm jealous of the cleanliness of the under carriage too

Awesome, glad it was something simple! Nice work as usual! 👊🐢☠️

The gear no 1 n R are very close i have changed, the rubbers but no difference..plz help
Check your motor mounts - if they are worn out the engine will sag and you'll never get the shift to work properly
Please help me!! i have a mk1 80' and my shifters sucks!
How i do this? what i need?
Try installing the same 4crawler after market linkages and bushings that I did ...

iv noticed that thr are different sizes.. one smaller ball and another bigger... dont know abt the lengths though
What is that round thing called
don't know
it's be neat to replace that rubber ball joint with a heim joint. I don't think it would be too hard to do.
That rubber joint is so old school though ----
