Moving To Our Future Alaskan Homestead

  • In this video, we move to our brand new future homestead! It is 2.5 acres and the home is 1000 sq ft. We were so excited for this move, although it did come with it's challenges such as getting stuck in our incredibly long driveway. We truly had an "Alaskan" move as we were joined by a moose who tried to climb in our trailer!
Hi, we are Emily and Matt, and welcome to A Glimpse of Alaska! In September 2022, we (along with our 8 month old puppy Aurora) made the nearly 5,000 mile drive from our home in Florida to our new home: Alaska. We created this channel to document and share our adventures in this wonderful state.
We appreciate each and every person who spent time out of their day to watch this video! If you enjoyed this video please consider liking and subscribing to our channel. We will be continuing to document all of our Alaskan adventures including hiking, fishing, gardening, and so much more!

Ok a few pieces of unsolicited advice from those of us who live in very snowy cold climates; Please get good tire chains for your vehicles! Build an enclosed porch for the front of your house, kind of like a mud room but nice. This is to help keep your heat inside the house when you come in, coats, shoes, muddy items etc come off and stay there, keeping the dirt and snow/water out of the house. Also when you can afford it get yourself a plow on a 4 wheeler or something else that can plow snow.

I used to live in a place that has life-threatening winters and it made me a firm believer in having a source of back-up heating like a wood burning stove. If you have electric heat, the power can go out during a bad storm. If you have gas heat, you could run out of gas and not be able to get a delivery of gas because of bad storms. Hope for the best but plan for the worse. (But for me personally, I love wood burning stoves anyway lol).
Loved the shot of the mountain scenery when yall were moving.

Best of luck in Alaska. Wife and I made the move to Alaska. We love the state. Spent 19 years. Did the first 5 mounts in a tent. Until we found a place 12 miles off the grid . Five years in the bush life. Next move was North Pole. Spent 12 years there. Had to move back to the lower 48 because of health reasons. We both miss Alaska. Although Maine is great too. When in the bush we lived between Manly Hot Springs and Rampart. Sawtooth mountain range at the base of elephant mountain.

With the price of fuel you don't want a bigger house. Good also they didn't go window crazy when they built it. The trend has been four by six windows and making half the outside wall space windows. windows are at best R3 and lose a big part of the heat.

Forty times to move! You must be students, but you have so many dreams and plans. And, lots of energy ... . Looks like south central; from the scenery, way tall birches, and lots of moose. I bet you're within 100 miles of Anchorage. Just between us, I like the way you refer to moving to Alaska and not a specific location, because once you're there it doesn't really matter to you where; it's Alaska and it's either close to a highway or a plane or boat or hiking will get you to your destination. And, those that don't know or haven't ever been there wouldn't know where you are living anyway.

I could and would never buy a home without a bathtub/shower combo, especially living in a cold climate. I live in Utah where it gets extremely cold. There's nothing more comforting me 9 months out of the Year where I can light a couple of candles, and take a hot bath for an hour and a half. There's nothing like it. Men replacing bath shower combinations with just a shower is a horrible idea especially if you only have one bathroom. And no, I do not like sitting in hot tubs are covering my body with fungus. I also feel strongly about not having two sinks in the bathroom. To me, it's a total waste of space. Where the extra sink is, I would love to have a vanity where I could sit and do my hair and makeup. The house you purchased is absolutely darling and I wish you many years of happiness

Just found your channel here in NC. Just very curious what brought such a young couple from Florida to Alaska? Like your new home. How long have you been in Alaska? Can’t wait to see you build your homestead. Those peanut butter balls are extremely time consuming but yummy.

You guys popped up in my feed yesterday, congrats on triggering the YT algorithm! He's a Matt and drives a Tundra in the correct and best color, this Matt that also drives a Tundra approves. Congrats on the new place. I'll also echo the advice that someone else posted about moose. They're more dangerous than bears in my opinion. Moose are mean lol.
