How To Fix Rapid Fire Shifter Not Shifting - Shimano Deore LX (SL-M569)

  • I show how to fix a RapidFire/trigger shifter that won't catch/shift, in this case, a Shimano Deore LX shifter, but the repair is similar for most trigger shifters. The common problem with these 1990's shifters is that the pawls get gunked up and stop moving smoothly. They generally just need to been cleaned and lubed so that the pawls move freely, but for this shifter that was not the case!

just picked up an old rigid hardtail from storage to find everything gunked up. my other bikes have issues with suspension and just need an old fashioned rigid hardtail. I probably would have torn down the shifter more, so thanks for the video.

Thank you! Now I have an idea of what I'm getting into disassembling my '94 LX Rapid Fire shifters.

Update: Rear shifter success! De-gooked and working fine. Front shifter -- applied too much force (NB not that much) to the frozen allen screw, which now turns without coming out. Likely stripped something plastic on the other end. Still usable, and changed cables today. Just can't shift to 3rd. Hope others can learn from my mistake.

Hey Jules! I hope so. I'm always looking for vintage parts and its nice to be able to get them working again. I was able to get both the front and rear shifters working - they will make a great pair on the Scott Peak build for sure! Cheers! 👊
