SL-M590 Deore 9 speed - this was very helpful to find the issue with the pawl. The design is slightly different but I found the pawl microspring dislodged explaining the lack of 8 detent movements. I managed to drag the spring end over the top of the pawl (or rather, bent it round the side and up and over) and everything started working again. The spring end didn't naturally find a resting/securing hole once it was pressurising the pawl, but testing it seems to find it working consistently. We will see!
Excellent video. I went to a local bike shop in Mt. Greenwood. An employee told me I needed two new shifters and they were out of stock. There would be a three month wait. I came home, watched this video and fixed both shifters in about ten minutes. This video probably saved me $200.00.
Thank you very much, you have just saved me from spending 100 Bucks for overpriced shifters. It was a different Model, but the same problem as described. And the solution worked👍🏼
Hi, thanks very much for sharing your video on fixing a shifter that is sticking. I had thought my shifter was just worn out, and was planning to either replace it or the whole bike. I followed your instructions and the shifter is again working perfectly! Thanks ps I've subscribed to your feed.
Briliant! I was about to buy a new shifter, but it turned out that it was enough to use some WD-40 to fix the old one! Thank you for creating this video!
You're awesome! Like most, I was banging my head against the derailleur for days. I then thought maybe it's the shifter...your video nailed it, I'm back in business - thank you!
Nice! You fixed my shifter problem! I’ve been trying to adjust my derailer for a week with no joy. Was about to take it to a bike shop until I found your video. Thank you!! Very well spoken. Clear instructions. Much respect!
Brilliant! Have just watched your video and mended my shifter it literally 2 mins. Fantastic - it has just saved me £20 buying a new shifter. Top video!!!!
Thanks for sharing this. My shifters are exactly the same model, mounted on a bike from 2003/2004. Faced the same issue recently, going to clean up and change the grease.
Thank you for the excellent informative video!! Just wondering, as you are aware WD 40 is a degreaser. Would we have to put more lubricant on the pawl after degreasing or is it fine as is?
I broke my shifter indicator putting it back together. It may be best to remove the indicator first, and replace after the shifter is back together. Looks like it needs to be 1st gear for it to line up.
Hmm, I have a problem, where it does not hold position. I have my front gear pretty much always set on the middle, but lately, the shifter has been dropping it down to the smallest gear constantly, so it is probably also related to the pawl not working right, right? I guess I'll try to take a look at it some time this week. I already planned on changing out the bike chain, as it has been skipping lately, which I'm not sure if it's related or not. I have measured the link distance, and it about 7mm, whereas a new chain has it about a millimeter tighter, so even if it is just a tiny amount, it might be the reason for the skipping of the chain? Either that, or the gears in the back are too worn, but I can't visually verify that. Anyway, thanks for the video, I was already looking at getting a new shifter, but could not find my specific model new anywhere, so seeing that it is actually relatively easy to take apart helps me out in giving it a shot myself.
You saved my day. After the fix it worked as new.
glad it helped

Most Welcome, and a good point, yes you can put more grease
Yes, I'd say liquid grease/wax, and not the gooey lube.
Excellent :) Thank you so much - I was just about to order a replacement. It only took a couple of minutes. Stay safe 👍
