Volos Greece 4K Summer Walk - Church of the Ascension of Christ & Analipsi Area Walking Tour

We begin this summer afternoon walk in Volos outside the Church of the Ascension of Christ (Ieros Naos Analipseos). The Church of the Ascension of Christ in the Analipsi area of Volos has a rich history dating back to 1870 when the site was originally a cemetery. As the city expanded, the cemetery was relocated, and residents sought to build a church. Initially, the local bishop Gregory was reluctant, but under community pressure, a small wooden structure was erected by the end of 1896. The name "Ascension of Christ" was chosen over Saint George. This wooden structure was used until a new church was built around 1900. After the old church suffered damage from the 1955 earthquakes, the current church was completed and inaugurated in 1975, with Bishop Damaskinos laying the foundation stone in 1962.
After exploring the church, we walk along Dimarhou Georgiadou street towards the Anavros stream, passing cozy local houses with picturesque gardens and yards, and some older examples of traditional local architecture. Upon reaching the Anavros stream, we turn right onto Magniton street. At 30:20, we see the Catholic Church of Volos, and at 42:40, we see the Holy Church of the Dormition of the Virgin Mary and Agios Kosmas of Etolos. We conclude our walk by returning to our starting point outside the Church of the Ascension of Christ.
