Volos Greece Old Town 4K Summer Walk - Palea Neighbourhood & Castle Ruins Walking Tour

- Join us for a summer afternoon walk through the historic Old Town of Volos, Greece. We begin our journey in front of the iconic 'I Love Volos' sign, turning to admire the bustling fishing boats harbour on our left and the impressive Volos Town Hall on our right. As we proceed towards the old port authority area of Volos, we encounter several tsipouradika restaurants serving delicious mezedes, while many cafes and restaurants remain closed due to the scorching summer heat.
Crossing to the other side of the main road, we reach Veggera at 18:00, one of the finest upscale restaurants in Volos. Nestled under large plane trees and adjacent to an archaeological site with remnants of the old Volos castle, Veggera offers exquisite Greek delicacies in a picturesque setting. We then head uphill to the heart of the Old Town, where we spot the City of Volos Museum at 22:30.
Winding through charming, stone-paved streets, we observe a mix of traditional and modern architecture. From 32:00 to 37:00, we explore extensive ruins of the old Volos castle, located at the western entrance of the city and covering an area of 60,000 sq.m. This Byzantine settlement was originally the site of ancient Iolkos, fortified in the 6th century during Emperor Justinian's reign. Inhabitants from the nearby city of Demetrias sought refuge here from Slavic raids. Although the walls were destroyed in 1889, some sections on the eastern and western sides still stand up to 7 meters high, with ongoing excavation works.
Continuing our walk, we encounter a friendly cat at 49:00 and the charming Agia Paraskevi chapel at 52:00. Our journey concludes at Agioi Theodoroi church, where we observe carefully preserved castle ruins beneath a wooden bridge.
