The whole show and that monologue was written by the genius Aaron Sorkin. He is also responsible for the West Wing. When they filmed that scene, Jeff Daniels did that in one take and you could hear a pin drop. It went on for three seasons and the first episode was about the Deepwater Horizon oil spill. Very powerful show and one of my favorites.

The problem is the nation is not a monolith. The question is "great for WHOM". Not the 60% who live paycheck to paycheck. Not the 687,000 people who annually declare bankruptcy due to medical debt. Not to the 50,000 or more per year who DIE unnecessarily from lack of medical care. Not the millions of homeless.

You can't teach work ethic. We are one of the most obese nations in the world. Id bet that the 60% who live paycheck to paycheck are undisciplined and lazy. Which leads to higher health problems and all kinds of other complications. America owes nothing to no one and creates opportunities for those who want better for themselves. Survival of the fittest is not just a concept.

I can't speak for any other continent, but I believe I can for Europeans. Western countries are basically the same. No one country is better than another, but it's only America that screams about freedom and how good they are. Honestly, your enthusiasm is sometimes baffling to Europeans because we're so reserved. That's not exclusive to Australia, it is how most of the world sees it. They have proven to have the potential of a first world country if they would agree to take half of what they spend on the pentagon and military, regular taxes without any loopholes. They'd be able to deliver first class on everything. Right now its only for those in a certain economic bracket. Where what it can deliver is pretty amazing. But for those not fortunate to be in that class bracket, it is like the wild west.
There are daily incidents so bad if it was to happen in Australia, the country would view it was their very own 9/11. In the US, to quote the famous words of Bison from Street Fighter "But for me, it was Tuesday."

All these Canadians and Europeans talking shit in the comments. I doubt any of you would be able to enjoy the free healthcare you have now if America wasn't here. You'd actually have to spend billions on a functioning military that can take care of the nation, rather than just slowing Russia or China down before you eventually go down!! America is like your safety net, and that allows the citizens of all our allies to live great lives with free healthcare.
If America simply didn't exist, my guess is there'd be no such thing as free healthcare hardly anywhere! But if the United States and either Russia or China bomb each other back into the stone age, billions are gonna get to finally see what it'll be like without us being able to help you at all, and we'll see if you still get to have free healthcare. You might, but you'll be the first ones going down whenever somebody bigger wants to invade you.
Sounds like a bunch of spoiled, ungrateful motherfuckers who only talk shit because they're able to, courtesy of America. Perhaps one day we'll get to see if your kids are flapping their lips as much as you are now. I'm not saying I like it here; WE don't get free healthcare here! But let's not kid ourselves, if it wasn't for us, you wouldn't either!! So talk your shit for as long as you want, but don't come crying and running to us for help the next time somebody scary starts looking your way.

I don't want to work 60 hours a week and have no paternity leave, no holiday pay and no sick leave. I don't want to live in a culture that is so much about the singular. In most parts of Canada people talk to each other in the line at grocery, we smile at each other, we hold the door open, we stop and help someone if they fall. Just saying.

The company who export supplies, allow those countries to negotiate the prices down to almost cost. Then they charge us, to make up the lost profit. Some of that awesome globalization, the establishment politicians want.
Help someone up, if they fall ? Really? Yeah, here we hold them down so they can't get up. Sometimes, just push down strangers for no reason. It's a game. Kind of like cow tipping. 😂😂. Ridiculous.

Well this is a reassuring comment for me personally. I have lived in the US my entire life thus far but grew up watching British TV and learning "British English". I've always wanted to travel the rest of the world, especially Europe, and learn from other cultures. In fact, most people I meet here haven't traveled much outside of their homestead/city, let alone their state. Granted, they are the size of countries, but most don't have much interest too. I've always said growing up that I may fall in love with a European girl and her life values, and consider moving over to Europe. 😂 So much entitlement here in the States. Yes, it's skewed due to social media, but it's shockingly common for me to encounter it more & more in daily life. Despite the London stabbings, crime, and crazy modern life challenges - I would still love to visit England, and the UK...

I think many people think their own country is "the best". What bothers me about some Americans is the attitude that not only are they "the best" (the "diversity" and "freedom, and freedom" answers, as if the US is the only diverse country in the world, and the only one with freedoms); they also think the US does it all alone and doesn't need anybody else. As a Canadian, I know that after Pearl Harbor we declared war on Japan before the US did; I know that the American hostages in Iran got out because of the Canadian ambassador and his staff (after US missions failed); I know that Canada took care of many flyers including Americans after airspace in the US was closed on 9/11. I know I've had cancer 3 times and didn't go bankrupt and my family's security wasn't put at risk. I could go on. So no, America is not the greatest country in the world.

From the HBO original series 'The Newsroom", the character of Will McAvoy (Jeff Daniels) is loosely based on former MSNBC, ESPN and CNN news and sportscaster Keith Olbermann. " We used to fight for what's right and defended the defenseless" No you did not. If you are referring to the Second World war, you were dragged into it against your will. It was Hitler that declared war on the United States, not the other way around. It was Britain that held out against Nazi Germany when Stalin and Hitler were still buddies and the United States thought that what happened in the rest of the world was not of its bussiness. Until Japan send an wake up call. Allmost all other wars (and the USA has been in some war most of its history) were either for imperial expansion (the Indigenous wars, Mexico,Haitii, Phillipine..) or to protect business (the banana wars, for example). Not to mention all the USA supported coups (Iran, Brazil, Chile and so many others). Even when going to war after being provoked (9/11) you manage to invade the wrong country. You were never the knight in white armour fighting the noble causes. At best, you were a bully fighting even worse bullies, at worst .....P.S. The second world war was won at much by British resilience and by Russian blood as by USA wealth. Not to mention the Canadians, Polish, Australians and so many other. It starts by pledging allegiance to our flag every day of school from day one. It comes from our lack of travel. Why travel out of the states when it’s easier to go to Disneyworld. It comes from the lack of language education and that include English, itself. Our literacy rates are in the toilet, but we’re told that any outsiders should be fluent in English or they’re outsiders. This is an insidious poison that has deliberately been produced here. It’s no wonder the worlds nations roll their eyes at us like we’re recalcitrant teenagers. We are! Have we done great things? Yes, with help from other nations. Comparing to other nations, people from many of those nations are coming here for economic and political reasons because the US has meddled in all those nations. The problems in every nation south of the US in the Western Hemisphere are the result of US meddling over the past 150 years. For example, Venezuela has an authoritarian government because both times before when it had a democratic government, the US went in and stoked rebellion to overthrow those democratic governments in favor of one more helpful to western companies.

They cover A LOT of news stories that happened prior to the shows existence, but with the benefit of doing it after the fact. If you were a news junkie from around 2009 to 2012ish, a lot of the topics they tackle would be very interesting for you to see through a newsrooms eyes. It tackles a lot of very real life topics, and the morality of the news.

They mostly look at us as gun toting, loud, uneducated buffoons. They may treat Krizz like one of the cool kids, but not because he’s American. Newsroom was a show, not a movie. It was a great show, too. The stats were correct at the time, as well.
As for numbers not lying... Yes they do. Numbers lie. Stats lie. How those numbers were calculated matters, and what parts of the conclusions are you being told matters. Take our media. Our "border crisis" is being inflated to the viewers constantly talking about it, the number of drug confiscations (which proves the opposite of what they pretend it does), and stories of big scary non-whites committing crime after crime, usually non-citizens from the south here illegally. They don't mention the fact that apart from simply being here, illegals commit less crime than white American citizens, and far less assaults and murders.
Numbers matter. The bias of the person giving them to you, even if they never lie, even once, matters too. With the same study, the right can convince you of the direct opposite conclusion that the left can. Always remember that. It's important.

Best explanation I ever heard from a first generation immigrant coming to this country was, “ well my cousin who couldn’t spell his own name correctly until he was 10, constantly blundered his way out of every straight job he ever tried to have in our community, burned virtually all bridges between him and anyone who would care about his life so he just went for it and made it to the states alone. “about a decade goes by and our family hears through the grapevine that my cousin now owns four small businesses, his own home plus a lake house, and more useless toys than he and his new family know what to do with.” “So we all kind of collectively look at each other and went, Wow, the worst / most ignorant human being we all knew collectively can become a huge success in America, I guess anybody with a pulse can, so we all started setting our sights to get here” America. Where the ignorant can be king.

    *Everybody wants to come here*
That statement is false and wasn't true anymore since the 90s… yes, you have a lot of refugees at your borders but mostly from Mexico, which is (sorry Mexico) is a shithole. And you have a lot of refugees from countries you self turned into fail states (like Libya, Iraq, Somalia, Ukraine and now Syria). Ask people from not third countries if they wanna live in the US… ask Russians if they want to live in US, they don't. You can walk alone in Saint Petersburg or Moscow as a woman at 3 AM and be absolutely safe, you can't do the same in New York or Chicago. Most European countries are still much saver than US and much more progressive in some fields (like education or health care). So I don't know what this dude is talking about.

    • @grelna
      @grelna วันที่ผ่านมา +1

When you say mostly from Mexico, I think you are conflating two different things. Mexico is, in fact, the single country that has provided the largest number of immigrants currently living here. Additionally, as a country it still contributes the largest number of people coming to the US per year, about half a million yearly. Then there are a couple hundred thousand immigrants yearly from South America, many of them coming through Mexico. Some people think this is where most of our immigration comes from. However, the countries south of our southern border don't even come close to making up a majority of ALL the immigrants we currently get each year from all sources. Over one million come from Asia every year (almost half a million from India alone). The idea that most immigration to the US is from Mexico used to be true (hence the numbers living here), but hasn't been true for quite a while.

@andypells8506 Sure. I didn't mean to imply that we got an insignificant amount of immigration from Europe (especially Eastern Europe) and Africa. It's just that when people talk of immigration as if it's a problem we have with a single country or border, I reach for the big numbers.
Actually , although I don't propose "open borders" and don't know anyone who does, I am glad people come here. If they didn't, the US population would be on a downward, aging trajectory and we'd all be in trouble. Market economies don't do well in that scenario.

  • @ThomasRaymond47

The Newsroom was a TV series on HBO that ran for 3 seasons starting in 2012. The statistics that the protagonist (Jeff Daniels) spoke to were accurate to the time. I am sure that the numbers given have changed since then, some for the better, some for the worse. However, the point he was making is true. Unlike certain politicians and their supporters love to wanting to "Make America Great Again", I disagree. Not because I don't support making my country great, but that America is 2, count them, 2 separate continents. North America and South America. We live in the United States of America. A country that is in North America, Also I don't believe that we need to "Make America Great Again" because I believe that the USA 8s still great. I actually find it humorous that the same people who scream at the top of their lungs that "America is the greatest country in the world", are the same ones yelling about making America great 'AGAIN'. They also, for the most part, have never been to another state, let alone another country to compare. I mention all of this because I am starting to think that the public are either becoming more and more stupid, or that they have been miseducated. I have repeatedly seen people wearing hats and t-shirts with our flag on them, which is a crime, I might add, with the word "'merica" printed over our flag. That, to me, is not only disrespectful of the flag and our country, but to the men and women who have served in our military, and especially the ones who paid the ultimate price for our country. My best friend in the Navy, was a young African American man named John. John was from south Alabama, Bayou Le Batre'. Yep, same as Bubba in Forrest Gump. He had never gone too far out of the state before he joined the service. New Orleans was about as far as he had traveled, and the way he told it, you would have swore that New Orleans was somewhere overseas. John died in Iraq, in 1991, during Desert Storm. I just found out this evening that his Mom passed away this morning. I loved her like she was my mom. She told me about Dr. King, and the Civil Rights movement of the 60's. She almost lost John during the march to Selma, some cop tried to beat her with a billy club, but her husband shielded her with his own body. He wasn't as lucky, busted him up pretty bad. I asked both of John's parents if they hated white people, considering how they and their families had been treated, and they both said no. They might dislike the people who had wronged them, but they wouldn't and couldn't hate anyone. When I asked why, I was told, and I'm paraphrasing, that to hate is what caused those people to wrong them, and if they hated those people back, they would be no better than those that treated them poorly.
My point to telling that memory is that, yes, the USA has had it's problems, and definitely has made quite a few mistakes. Now if we, as a country, can acknowledge these mistakes, and have honest conversations about them and how to move forward, I believe that we can fix the problems in our country, whether it be race, religion, immigration, etc. If we skip the blame game, accept criticism as constructive, and have honest communication about what the problem is, and how to fix it, this country and it's people would be better for it. Black Lives Matter doesn't mean that other lives don't. If you're a Police Officer, and you conduct your job, and yourself with respect for others, you know the Golden Rule, do on to others, as you would have others do on to you, if that's how you conduct yourself, then I applaud you. Unfortunately, quite a lot of your colleagues in the city, state, and federal policing agencies do not. If you think that leaning your knee into a restrained person's neck is acceptable, then you are part of the problem. If large people frighten you, maybe law enforcement isn't the right career for you. If you're in law enforcement and agree with my statements, but won't write up another cop when they violate a suspect's civil rights, or downright break the law, and the laws of decency, then you also are part of the problem. At the same time, if the police are talking to you, about a traffic violation, follow their instructions respectfully, do not give them a reason to futz with you. When the Officer asks if you know why you are being stopped, say "no Officer" this is the correct answer to that particular question. If you are being arrested, or think that you are, do not resist, make it very obvious that you are not resisting, and the only thing that you say to the police once you have been restrained is, "lawyer". Nothing more, nothing less. You have the right to be silent, nut it's up to you to exercise that right. These are some of the problems with our country.
Now, like Krizz Kaliko, I also have been all over the world, as a sailor, and later as a Seal. I can say with certainty, that we as a country are loved and/or respected through most of the free world. We, as individuals, are not as respected, and certainly not loved. I personally have been very respected in other countries, I think, because I show respect to people, in general, wherever I am. Unfortunately, most ' 'mericans" demand that because they are Americans, they somehow deserve to have their a**es kissed on a regular basis. They don't. Treat people with dignity. If you have a problem with immigration, especially the undocumented sort, blame your representatives and senators. Don't blame the immigrants. They are only doing the same thing as most any other groups that have fled fear and oppression. Unless you are Native American or your ancestors were brought here as slaves pre-1865, most of our families came here for the same reason. Also, two more facts. 1) Most undocumented immigrants are not coming from south of the border, they are Asian and Europeans that have overstayed their visas. 2) Those that have come from beyond our Southern or Northern borders are still Amercans. I am sorry, I didn't intend to write a novel. Peace.

Now most news shows don't care about fact checking (not news), or have been relegated to 30 second clips of sensationalized headlines and agendas. We have tuned out serious news as not worth our time and boring. I've seen different parts of the world through my travels in the Navy. Every country is unique in its own way. There are privileges we get to enjoy here that others around the world do not and vice versa. Some cultures are warm and welcoming, and others are cold and prejudicial and even full of hate towards our own culture. I don't give credit to people claiming a country is the greatest/worst unless they have traveled themselves. we also live in a very troubled period where everyone is saber rattling and fear mongering left and right and it feels like no government can be trusted. End of the day, I'm still grateful for being an American, but we definitely have our work cut out for us to make this country better. The buck starts and stops with everyone walking the streets and going to work every day. I don't want to hear "what about the politicians" because who puts them into office? We do. Want crime and poverty to end? Start policing each other in the neighborhoods and get the kids off the damn drugs and out of gangs. I'm seriously sick of the blame game. I wonder how they feel now that the Tea Party has devolved into the MAGA cult?

@wreckingKREW1 excellent call out. I'm not sure why so few people make that connection. I personally lost a Home to the Housing Market collapse. The Tea Party was real to me before the Koch Brother money flooded in. Watching that mutation was a fucking nightmare.

Everyone wants to go to America not because it's the greatest country in the world. People want to try a piece of the American 🥧 from what they see on T.V. The thing is America is always in the center of the stage. And it all comes down to who's in the spotlight.

What's crazy is, the countries that are on top got it from us! We went off the rails 40 years ago and call it socialism now... we can get it back, but the window gets smaller and smaller each year.

This is from The Newsroom, which came out about ten years ago. It's even more relevant now, though. And I have to say, this video really encapsulates what's going on. You stop Jeff Daniels in his speech before he explains his position, in order to express your opinions on a position you haven't yet heard.

That is a good clip, some of his stats are misleading like the US spends more on defense spending. Technically true if you look only at publicly reported dollars but: 1. most countries don't publicly report how much they spend on their military like the US does. 2. In countries like China and Russia the government owns the manufacturers of military equipment (imagine if the Dept of Defense owned Lockhead, Boeing, Northrup, Honeywell, etc) that makes it cheaper. 3. While it is true that the US spends 18 times as much on military as Poland for example we also have 10 times more people, per person we spend not quite double what Poland spends and doesn't take into account how many Joint-Protection treaties the US has signed. Also the number of people in prison is off, again most countries don't post that info on the internet like the US does and those like China, Russia, Cuba, Iran, Saudi Arabia, and Venezuela don't include the political prisoners in their number.

Immigration rate per country: USA-0.27%, Germany-0.41%, United Kingdom- 0.69%, France - 0.96%. Just if anyone would want to use this as an excuse.
