This is a new song from my upcoming, second LP 'Vaquero'. A big thanks to my good friend Luc Valcourt for filming out there in the sub zero weather. This entry was recorded in the beautiful North Carolina Appalachian Mountains, in the dead of winter, next to the wagon trail where Luc's Scots-Irish family arrived many moons ago. A more recent immigrant from Ulster myself, I feel at home in these hills. They remind me of my Irish childhood home. This record in general concerns my coming to terms with being 'semi-American' and fully embracing and owning the rich tapestry of American music I've come to know and love over the years. This is my second time entering the Tiny Desk Contest. The first time I submitted my song Josephine, from my first Yes The Raven LP 'Love is Covered in Dust', a song simultaneously about Napolean and Wyatt Earp.

I like how your chords are dissonant at times and weave themselves seemlessy through the chorus. Wonderful and inspiring.

As a pianist, I've performed out in the cold. It's not easy, especially on fingerpicking songs that require constant accurate finger placement. That alone is worth of immense respect. Not to mention Abilene is a beautiful song made even more achingly melancholy by the fireside setting in the heart of winter. Thanks Alan!

5:31 = most moving, expressive, and meaningful.

The crackle of the fire really adds to the warmth of the song. Creative idea to play around a campfire, and in the snow no less! I really like the guitar work in that post-chorus part: "love lies take you home..."

That's a jaw-dropping song and performance. At first I assumed you had overdubbed some of the guitar parts but then I realized it was all you...LIVE! Wow. Spellbinding.

So - "discovered" this January 2016 rendition after being entranced by the August 2022 version. Amazed the (brass?) slide didn't bond with your finger. Also interesting to hear the piece pitched "down" a full step, and the slightly different "production values". But both are exquisite captures of a haunting song.
Reminds me of those Decembers when I used to listen to different versions of In the Bleak Midwinter back-to-back. It seemed a good idea at the time.

    "He said sparkles again"...ha
The deep sadness and pain here is too relatable to me. I feel it wiggling around in me looking for an exit.
That train lick is off the charts bro. Bless you and best of luck and happiness to you and your's. Hope I can get to Hickory someday and book some time in your studio. peace

Wow... in the face of such creative apogee dare I ask a simple question of you about the guitar: Is that an original 30s 00 ladder braced instrument, or a modern version? I'm just curious; it sounds so perfect in this setting, bringing out all the disparate voices, the thrumming drones, the piercing harmonics, the haunting slides. It's uncanny if that's all coming from a hundred year old guitar.
And don't even get me started on the merits of your playing, composition, poetry... I'd love to sit and listen to a set of yours beside Bob Dylan, just to watch his reaction. I'd have a pack of tissues handy.

      It’s a modern guitar

@@AlanMearns-YesTheRaven It's all fantastic. I may have said it before, but especially in passages like the outro when you're singing the falsetto, you remind me so much of Bruce Cockburn's early works, like from the 1971 High Winds, White Sky period. Bravo Alan!

Wow! Well done. Great work with the slide. So I have never seen a slide that just covers up to the first knuckle on the pinky! Did you make that yourself?
