EL TORO was a gift from the Baseball God's. He came from a very small village in the middle of nowhere Mexico & ONLY a Teenager! He was brought to Country he knew very little about, where he didn't know the language & was suddenly thrust on to a pitching mound that sat in the middle of a Stadium more grandioso than anything he'd ever imagined, but in the middle of all this what must have been pure chaos to him, he always had immense poise, he never seamed overwhelmed or shaken by it, he was simply amazing 🙏 I was a 19yr old kid in So-Cal myself in 1980, I'm happy to say I saw Fernando-Mania & experienced it in all it's Glory. There were "I ♥️ Fernando" & "I Survived Fernando-Mania" tee-shirts all over So-Calif & below, Bakersfield to the southern tip of Mexico itself. If you're a Dodger fan you know EL TORO is LEGEND 🙏

I was @ this game. I was on vacation, had taken my kids to Disneyland earlier. Decided to go watch the Dodgers that evening. When I got to the stadium, the game was sold out, but managed to get tickets from a scalper @ the gate. I thought I had gotten screwed for paying about $5 over regular price.

In the pavilion throwing a ball with Dusty Baker or Mike Marshall and Baker when he had to go back in he would throw candy at us. Got to see Steve Garvey, Steve Sax, Pedro Guerrero, Mike Sciocia, Lazorda, Kirk Gibson and many more. On this days game I was 4 days into my Marine Corps boot camp at MCRD San Diego 6 days after graduating and most likely watching the fireworks from Sea World at night from my top bunk facing the windows. It was tough but I was lucky like that. Missed those $3 pavilion or nose bleed seats and Dodger dogs. Go Dodger Blue!! Semper FI.

Yeah, it was like that! The year he pitched the no hitter however, he was slumping and I happen to see him wearing glasses while driving around LA. (It was one of those big Mercedes.) So I called in to Dodger radio and said on air that if he needs glasses to drive, why not on the mound? He started wearing them and pitched this no hitter. My greatest moment as a Dodger fan. Joyful. Absolutely true story.

sucks he got overlooked but his legacy speaks for itself. i wouldn't read too much into the national (Mexican) aspect of it as if anything baseball would want to capitalize on Mexican Americans by pandering considering how many Mexican immigrants are in America. but Valenzuela was great pitcher just overshadowed by the hall of famers but like i said his legacy which includes phenom rookie year, world series, no hitter, etc plus his fan support speaks for itself he will NEVER be forgotten and in alot of ways will be remembered even more than some hall of famers because of this.

This was actually the second no-hitter that day, BOTH of which were seen on ESPN. The first was Dave Stewart throwing one for the A's against the Blue Jays that was the regional game on ESPN (back when ESPN had an alternate game to show) with the second no-hitter being this one that was the main game of the Friday night doubleheader in those days (called by Gary Thorne on ESPN).
I remember hearing about Tim Crews's death. He was killed in a freak accident that also killed a young relief pitcher by the name of Steve Olin. Bobby Ojeda survived that accident. Mike Sharperson was killed in a car accident. Both of them are missed.

ray Gordon totally agree, the devastating screwball was pretty much ancient history, fastball might have hit 90 on a good day but to see him throw a no hitter late in his career was special. All those screwballs and high pitch counts and complete games made his arm a noodle. 1986 20 complete games in 1 yr? Amazing
ray Gordon more amazing was before the game in the clubhouse the Dodgers players were watching highlights of that days earlier no hitter by Dave Stewart. Fernando then informed them that they were going to see one thrown live by him that night. the guys laughed it off at the time but werent laughing anymore when he went out and did it.
One of the happiest moments of my teen years. It was a very special year, I graduated HS, got accepted into my top choice univ., then Fernando pitches this gem. Bonus that ex-Dodger Dave Stewart also got a no-hitter for the A's earlier that same day. A few years later I got to live in the same high rise as Mr. Stewart.

Watching the 9th inning brought back great memories for me...Had the opportunity to play against a team from Sonora, Mexico back in 1980 at El Sereno Park in Los Angeles. Starting first-baseman, Fernando Valenzuela. I still have the hat he signed for me after the game...Miss you Vin.
I grew up in San Diego but with a DODGER BLUE FAMILY! I had Fernando Mania.. he was a spectacle to behold. His screw ball, his curve, the way he looked to the sky as he delivered the ball! He's still a part of the Dodger family today, as part of the Mexican radio broadcasting crew. He's always going to be a HERO to me.
If Fernando Valenzuela pitched in today's era of baseball, he would have had a much longer prime and gone on to the HOF. Tommy Lasorda over taxed his arm by letting Valenzuela finish way to many ballgames. Just to many complete games the first 7 or 8 seasons in his career. Valenzuela was part of some really bad Dodger ball clubs during his tenure in Los Angeles. For example he won 21 games in 1986 for the Dodgers, 20 of those were complete games, and even the 10 games he lost that season he often pitched really deep into the game. Looking back at those years, the Dodger coaching staff led by Manager Tommy Lasorda was really dumb to waist Valenzuela like that in the years where the Dodgers were having losing seasons. I guess alot of clubs did the same thing to their pitchers. Nowdays of course clubs protect their pitchers, especially their elite pitchers and only allow them to throw a specific ammount of pitches. I remember games where Valenzuela would thrown in excess of 150 pitches in certain ballgames.

I'm still so disappointed that MLB didn't include Valenzuela in their Tribute in this years ( 2017 ) All-Star Game. Shame on you don't you know how many he has influenced and has many Fans. Once again We Mexicans get overlooked that it hurts.
sucks he got overlooked but his legacy speaks for itself. i wouldn't read too much into the national (Mexican) aspect of it as if anything baseball would want to capitalize on Mexican Americans by pandering considering how many Mexican immigrants are in America. but Valenzuela was great pitcher just overshadowed by the hall of famers but like i said his legacy which includes phenom rookie year, world series, no hitter, etc plus his fan support speaks for itself he will NEVER be forgotten and in alot of ways will be remembered even more than some hall of famers because of this.

One of the all-time great Dodgers - and great ball players in general. And this was a magical moment, for sure. Rest in peace, sir, and thank you for the memories and for changing the team and the game in such profound and important ways.
This was actually the second no-hitter that day, BOTH of which were seen on ESPN.
The first was Dave Stewart throwing one for the A's against the Blue Jays that was the regional game on ESPN (back when ESPN had an alternate game to show) with the second no-hitter being this one that was the main game of the Friday night doubleheader in those days (called by Gary Thorne on ESPN).
I'll always remember those no-nos that night as my Son was born that very evening as well.

I remember hearing about Tim Crews's death. He was killed in a freak accident that also killed a young relief pitcher by the name of Steve Olin. Bobby Ojeda survived that accident. Mike Sharperson was killed in a car accident. Both of them are missed.

when i was kid every five days i was glued to the tv watching fernando valenzuela in my home town of tepic nayarit mexico and the mexican play by play guys also did an amazing job on the ending of this particular game must be on you tube as well with mexican tv anouncers by the way in mexico he was called el toro fernando valenzuela

The fact Fernando did this after his injury and being a shell of his old self is amazing. He was done by this time "stuff" wise.
ray Gordon totally agree, the devastating screwball was pretty much ancient history, fastball might have hit 90 on a good day but to see him throw a no hitter late in his career was special. All those screwballs and high pitch counts and complete games made his arm a noodle. 1986 20 complete games in 1 yr? Amazing

Fernando then informed them that they were going to see one thrown live by him that night.
the guys laughed it off at the time but werent laughing anymore when he went out and did it.

One of the happiest moments of my teen years. It was a very special year, I graduated HS, got accepted into my top choice univ., then Fernando pitches this gem. Bonus that ex-Dodger Dave Stewart also got a no-hitter for the A's earlier that same day. A few years later I got to live in the same high rise as Mr. Stewart.

Scully is the best announcer because he is not a homer, objective and calls it like he sees it.
Watching the 9th inning brought back great memories for me...Had the opportunity to play against a team from Sonora, Mexico back in 1980 at El Sereno Park in Los Angeles. Starting first-baseman, Fernando Valenzuela. I still have the hat he signed for me after the game...Miss you Vin.

I grew up in San Diego but with a DODGER BLUE FAMILY! I had Fernando Mania.. he was a spectacle to behold. His screw ball, his curve, the way he looked to the sky as he delivered the ball!
He's still a part of the Dodger family today, as part of the Mexican radio broadcasting crew.
He's always going to be a HERO to me.

If Fernando Valenzuela pitched in today's era of baseball, he would have had a much longer prime and gone on to the HOF.
Tommy Lasorda over taxed his arm by letting Valenzuela finish way to many ballgames. Just to many complete games the first 7 or 8 seasons in his career.
Valenzuela was part of some really bad Dodger ball clubs during his tenure in Los Angeles. For example he won 21 games in 1986 for the Dodgers, 20 of those were complete games, and even the 10 games he lost that season he often pitched really deep into the game.
Looking back at those years, the Dodger coaching staff led by Manager Tommy Lasorda was really dumb to waist Valenzuela like that in the years where the Dodgers were having losing seasons.
I guess alot of clubs did the same thing to their pitchers.
Nowdays of course clubs protect their pitchers, especially their elite pitchers and only allow them to throw a specific ammount of pitches.
I remember games where Valenzuela would thrown in excess of 150 pitches in certain ballgames.
Vin you will be missed, what Commentary. An absolute legend.
