It is just so beautiful to see an amazing artist as Bobby showing the human side that he and everybody else have... Made me admire him even more. To be a great artist, mean we have to be great people first, and this guy is really a great, mature and admirable person, and his art just shows that. Good job!
As an artist and animator starting out on the internet and trying to get my work out there, I find all of your talks very motivating and inspiring to keep me going. Keep doing what your doing dude!
You are already THE GREATEST ARTIST EVER coz' You share your thoughts and you have power to INSPIRE others! It's a rare phenomen in this world when everyone in this industry wants to have paid for every line what they said. But YOU don't! You share for free with us the most important knowledge - the experience! Thank you for that! You are not only superb at art but also very smart! YOU ARE AWSOME! POLAND LOVES YOU! :)
I'm working towards being an illustrator and my biggest problem is that I always rush myself. I know art takes time but whenever I work on something I always rush through it because I see all these great artists draw a great painting in under 2 hours or so, which would take me at least 10 hours to finish. There's always this voice in my head that tells me I won't have the luxury to spend 20 hours on a piece when I have several projects waiting to be done, so I try to work faster, which obviously results in spending less time on details, shading, composition etc... and that's really frustrating. Also I'm going on 35 now and after working lousy jobs for over 10 years, I finally want to switch my career and go for my first love of art and drawing. I know it takes time to start a new career and to make good art, but I'm constantly feeling like time is running out for me and I'll be stuck with a miserable job for the rest of my life. That's my confession.
Jaros Bodytko hi! I'm on a similar situation as you, I'm 33 and decided to finally switch careers. I wish you the best of luck and I hope to see your art around! :D
I'm glad to see that even talented, successful artists feel the same way I do. Yes, it does mean those thoughts won't go away, but it also means that I don't feel this way because I am terrible, I feel this way because I am an artist.
Great video Bobby. Really courageous of you to let the facade down and be that real and vulnerable with your audience. I'm sure it will inspire and help a lot of people, as well as let us get to know the more human side of you. Thanks for that.
Sometimes doing too much can lead to a block. You have done a lot this year, traveling, planning, picking up and going...artists need the down time for creativity. Stress can kill it. I know this because I am a single mom and I never have time for myself. I do everything. Artists need that quiet time to reflect and to create. We do need solitude to concept and to let the ideas come to us...
I can totally relate to a lot of those. It's hard sometimes to remind myself that it's ok that there are artists that are better than me. I have to remind myself that I am in a different phase of life and if I keep working hard I'll get better.
Sorry to say but even if you don't like your art... We DO!! And some of my favorite ones are still your stream plant/mush creatures. Maybe you already do that: if you feel something is missing in your art, you might want to try to identify it and search for it in other sources to inspire yourself in that direction; or try to see types of art you usually don't /or cultural activities you've never been, to breathe from a different source. I hope you like your art back very soon! Thank you again for your inspiring videos!
Nice video Bobby! And I have to say I have a schoolism subscription and it is great! The amount of different courses and the variation of subjects is just fantastic! The courses I have taken where very informative and I do feel like it has helped me get better in my craft. It almost sounds like I am advertising here :P but I really do recommend it!
I like Schoolism, but I wish it would be available on an iPad so that I can watch the lessons and exercise at the same time. It's been a while since I listened to a lesson. As far as the video, I think feeling like a fraud is common to most artists. I also realized I was comparing myself to artworks by masters who did them in their late years. When I walked in a fair and saw where my peers were standing, I realized I was OK. When the "blue days" hit and I feel absolutely worthless, I put on a smile and "fake it until I make it". By the way, your talk at Sheridan inspired me to do my own thing. So, thanks.
I do post my worst art too :D Because I hardly ever think my art is good enough to show it to anyone so if I didn't post my very bad pieces I would gradually stop posting for good :'D I know I have a lot to learn but for me this fear I'm not good enough and that I'm not improving is the worst, it used to even block me from drawing. Now I deal with it by showing all, better and worse pieces, and laughing at mistakes I make and trying to stay humble when I get any critique and advice from other artists. Your videos are great inspiration, even when I don't see your new video the moment you upload it here, I can be sure I won't miss anything because there's always someone in my digital art group on facebook that would post it as soon as they see it :)
Nice video :] I'm signing up for Nathan Fowkes class. Really like what you're doing, the message you're putting out there and your approach to creative education!
A good one, Bobby. This is a 2 cents from a guy twice your age: insecurity is like flooring a gas pedal: having none will get you nowhere as you'd think life is good which led to another thinking that you've 'got' it so you'd stop progressing in life, and hitting it too much will took it out of control and you'd crash and burn. Applies to everything in life not just about being an artist. So have a healthy dose of it, traverse the traffic of life with full mind and have no regret. Peace bro.
Personally with #1, kind of a nitpick but I think it might've been fun if he actually showed us one of his supposedly bad drawings and maybe say a bit about what's wrong with it for those who can't see the errors. But I get his point, and otherwise a great video!
I found it so shocking that you feel like an impostor. I don't think I'd heard anyone talk about that before, although I started feeling that way a while ago. Thank you for sharing that. It's helped me keep pushing myself when I find myself backing away.
I post pretty much all my work/sketches online. And I think it's shame that more people don't do it. Why? Because it's actually really boring to look just those finished paintings and personally I would love to see ideas/progress and artistic evolution.
thanks man I went through these fears but I got past it and I got used to the fears of weather your art is good not and I had to get out of that dumb mind frame cause it dosent matter if your art looks cringy or bad and you don't like how it turned out, made a mistake on it cause you got to learn how to laugh at your artwork and not take it seriously cause this is a very creative platform where the possibilitys are limitless so have a chuckle and laugh at your own art of it looks bad, dosent look right, did something wrong here just relax and enjoy art it is an expression there is no perfect or bad there is only improvement to get better at because who knows that "mistake or error" might have made it better ;) but that's just me I'm not anywhere near you Bobby chiu no where near professional but who cares I'm having fun and that's all that matters :D
Hi, Bobby. Great video as always. Also it's extremely rare to hear an artist of your calibre to share their fears and concerns therefore it's even more valuable. Also I wanted to ask: how do you overcome this imposter issue you mentioned. I finally got hired by a gamedev studio after years of struggling to break into the industry but I feel I'm still terrible and everything I do is terrible and I will get fired because I'm terrible. And now I'm kinda scared to apply to a bigger studio because I feel I'm not worthy of the spot.
Great as always. Now, some personal opinion: You, I think, are actually making a nice living off your passion for art. That alone I consider it a privilege few ever attain. If that is not a mark of success then I don't know what is. However, I do agree with most of your points. Some days you wake up like batting a thousand and others you feel all you do sucks and question your life decisions. Being aware of so many great talents out there is both a blessing (so much inspiration!) and a curse (so much talent a million times better than I'll ever be). But that won't ever change - it's what makes us human. Nothing to do but "keep calm and carry on"...
It was nice to hear you get a little bit more personal for once, talking about you feeling like you've been in an artistic slump. Even the best artists and professional have down times. I think it's a good idea to share and talk about, it can really help getting out of those feelings.. If I may ask, is that why you almost don't post any new art anymore?
Hi Bobby, thank you for the great video I wanna ask about the subscription. I got a year subscription from June, will it change into monthly subscription in the next month??? Di i have to pay more???
Bobby, if you ever see this comment. I must greatly thank you for this video. I'm having a "big time" with imposter syndrome. If people ask me what I do, I never mention that I study art, just in case they as to show me something... But I will keep fighting the good fight. Thank you very much!
Thank you, Bobby for your reply honesty! Also a massive thank you for bringing Mr.Carcamo to Schoolism. Already enrolled, and ready to immerse myself in the watercolour.
basically my confessions in one video lol. My art group always compliments me how good I am, but they don't see what's behind the scenes. It took probably 100 crappy small drawings to make 1 good drawing :P
Rachel Evans same!!! It's so alienating And then you post the drawing you worked 15+ hours on, perfected every detail of and was really proud of it and no one gives a crap lmao It's like I'm from a different world with different values and perception. Idk.
Always try to keep in mind your audience. If you're drawing something unfamiliar to your audience but that you really like, the chances are far more likely it'll get ignored by your followers. It certainly doesn't mean you can't admire your own work! :) Popularity doesn't always equate to quality. While at first disheartening, no reason to worry about it. :)
"Some people" LOL You're doing what most aspiring artist will and can only dream of doing. Bobby do you actually hate your work? You're getting paid enough money doing this that you're actually able to provide for yourself and others. You get to travel. You have a successful business/school. I would be extremely humbled if I had a fraction of your successful life.
First off, he never said he hated his job. He is totally humble about how great his life is, but you don't know his full story. He's talking about the behind the scenes of his life. So quit jumping to conclusions and be 'that kind of person' at a party
You're a huge inspiration to me.
You've won an Emmy, congratulations! Always been an inspiration Bobby!
It is just so beautiful to see an amazing artist as Bobby showing the human side that he and everybody else have...
Made me admire him even more. To be a great artist, mean we have to be great people first, and this guy is really a great, mature and admirable person, and his art just shows that. Good job!
This is a literal straight up the most relatable video of all time
"learn enough about art and world has no choice but to notice you" = golden.
As an artist and animator starting out on the internet and trying to get my work out there, I find all of your talks very motivating and inspiring to keep me going. Keep doing what your doing dude!

Jaros Bodytko don't worry I'm in your same shoes here and I'm not willing to give up with out a fight!
Jaros Bodytko hi! I'm on a similar situation as you, I'm 33 and decided to finally switch careers. I wish you the best of luck and I hope to see your art around! :D
Reminder that even the best can be like everyone, thanks Bobby for the honest talk!
Bobby, you are a treasure. Great post ... will bookmark it for those "down days" we all suffer through from time to time.
That's modest of you to quote successful and be so honest. Thanks man
I think this is one of the best video you ever did. So inspiring! Thank you for sharing your experience!
Thanks so much!
Thank you, Bobby. Sincerely.
Really informative and inspiring video :)
Thank you, Bobby. Very helpful. I am grateful for all you do for art and artists! Thank you, again. 😊
Thanks so much for sharing and your honesty.
Thank you for these tips
Pretty cool avatar. I don't know why but I love it.
Thank you :D

I'm only an incredibly amateur video-editor and I absolutely love these!
Thank you so much Bobby for giving us all such a great resource. You're amazing!
Thank you so much for these words, you are amazing.
Thanks a lot for the schoolism awesome new subscription. You're the best!

Thank you dear Bobby! You are such an inspiration! 🔥
Thank you for watching!! :)

I was thinking about these exact things last night. Thank you for this video, it really calmed me down!
I can totally relate to a lot of those. It's hard sometimes to remind myself that it's ok that there are artists that are better than me. I have to remind myself that I am in a different phase of life and if I keep working hard I'll get better.
I love your videos, they are really comforting ! Thank you so much for all that !
This really helped me thank you! Been binging your videos and will totally take schoolism too.
Hey Amanda cooper-lincoln...thanks so much for your comment! :)

Another fresh and useful video--well done.
Thank you so much for this great and inspiring video! I've been going through a slump, too, BUT NO MORE, GOTTA DRAW
Thank you for this. I've been detesting everything I draw recently and I thought it was just me. Thank goodness I'm not alone.
Thank you for this video, it feels good to know other artist feel the same way, even successful artist like yourself.

Solid video. All the feels Bobby :)
Great vid, Bobby! Thanks!
Great video, especially the bit about not seeing artists worst drawings. Very reassuring :)
Thanks for your kind comment! Glad to hear this video was helpful to you😊 Thanks for watching!

I was curious, Bobby, will we ever see any animation folks teaching on Schoolism?
Thank you for sharing xxxx
I needed to hear this! Thank you :)
This is really inspirational! Thanks for your help :)
Thank you for sharing. It's nice to hear successful people are human too. I'm so motivated. Thank you :D
Thanks Bobby! I really needed that, sometimes you just need to know others have times like these too. ;)

Thanks, dude. Love you man.

That imposter feeling is what I get when ever I'm in my art class or when I go to drawing workshops or even surrounded by other artist.
Hi, Bobby. Great video as always. Also it's extremely rare to hear an artist of your calibre to share their fears and concerns therefore it's even more valuable. Hi Bobby, thank you for the great video

old sketchbook video or a failed drawings video?? 😂

For me it's not about overcoming imposter syndrome, it's all about getting use to it knowing that we all go through it.
Thank you, Bobby for your reply honesty! Also a massive thank you for bringing Mr.Carcamo to Schoolism. Already enrolled, and ready to immerse myself in the watercolour.
If success makes you feel like an impostor, I take that to be a sign that you are most likely not a narcissist.

When the best resources are needed payment and you're just a high school kid and you know your parents won't allow you to buy
You da man Bobby, hope the slump passes soon. 6 months, sjeesh - Hell naw! Hahaha
Haha, everything you said in here is true ;)
doesn't sound like issues for the "have it all"
My worst drawings are my most popular by far:(
the more i hate it, the more it blows up
Rachel Evans same!!! It's so alienating

Woah do you not age? Shouldn't you be like 50?
One of your paintings aka the dodo bird is crooked
Woah he smokes meth?? Never expected him to confess that
"Some people" LOL
