  • ( Unboxing ) 4 pairs of glasses from Zenni Optical & Eye Buy Direct. My goal was to find two pairs of glasses under $10 and two pairs under $35. Also, I will be comparing a pair of glasses from Costco -that has all the extra anti-glare coatings. I will show you what I spent on each pair of glasses. Help you understand how to use each website. Share what the experience was like ordering from Eye Buy Direct and Zinni. Also, give info for how long each pair of glasses took to arrive. I'll share my honest opinion on how comfortable the eyeglasses are, how much glare, and overall quality. I hope this video saves you money and helps you to make an informed decision on where to find a great deal on prescription glasses.

    As a former optician, i'm now retired and enjoying playing golf, I really enjoyed your comparison of your glasses from Eye Buy Direct, Zenni Optical and Costco. One thing i don't think you mentioned was what you paid out of pocket for your glasses from Costco. Even though Costco has very nice glasses and their prices are really very good compared to many other local optical shops, you still most likely paid at least $100.00 or more for your glasses. Those optional coatings you got on your glasses aren't covered by insurances because their considered as being cosmetic. I will never forget years ago when my daughter got her first glasses and she was driving at night wearing glasses for the first and she was blinded by an oncoming cars headlights hitting the lenses of her glasses just right and blinding her something she had never experienced until she started wearing glasses. It scared her so badly that she didn't want to drive at night anymore for fear of that happening again. She was a very happy young woman when they came up with the AR coatings. Her daughter recently started wearing glasses and my daughter made sure that her glasses had an AR coating on them when she ordered them. I have ordered glasses from bot sites since retiring and I have found Zenni to be the better option because they have many more glasses priced lower than Eye Buy Direct has. Also i think Eye Buy Direct often gets left over frames from stores that they offer at a low prices but they usually only have a limited supply of that frame. Not a big deal but a bit on the cheap side is the cardboard glasses case rather than at least a more protective plastic case for your glasses. This isn't a big deal for anyone that wears their glasses full time because they have no use for the case anyway, but for those that only wear glasses for certain things they really do need a case to put them in when their not wearing their glasses. We all know that putting glasses in pockets or a purse without being in a glasses case will lead to them getting badly scratched rather quickly. I'm sure a plastic case like Zenni uses can't be much of an added cost. So i assume that when you ordered your glasses from Eye Buy Direct and Zenni you used the same prescription that you got when you got your Costco glasses. So all 5 pairs should be the exact same prescription. Now something you noticed when changing from one pair of glasses to another and from one site to the other as well was that you felt like you were able to see things slightly clearer through your Eye Buy Direct glasses than with your Costco glasses and the Zenni glasses. Your eyes weren't deceiving you. You most likely were seeing slightly better through the Eye Buy Direct glasses. When the lenses for glasses are made they are actually layers of very thin plastic in different prescription values. Your prescription for both eyes is a -1.50 SPH so your lenses might be made up as 3 layers each being -.50 making them -1.50 or maybe 2 layers of -.50 and 2 layers of -.25 adding up to -1.50.. But it's very possible that instead of a layer being -.50 it could actually be -52 in strength which is within what they call a tolerance level. So it's certainly possible that the lenses in your Eye Buy Direct glasses might be close to -1.60. Now if they were checked and determined to be over -1.65 then that would be closer to being -1.75 so the inspection people would reject them and new lenses would need to be made for your glasses. Being off that little bit most people would never notice and it's really not going to do any harm to your eyes. It may surprise you to knw that even during a normal day your eyesight can be different from how you saw things early in the morning to how you see them later that night. If you were to get your eyes examined say on a Sunday morning soon after after getting up your eyes would be much fresher than they would be on a Friday evening right after a hard day of doing computer work or other close detailed work. So getting your eyes examined on the Sunday morning might give you a prescription of -1.25 compared to getting your eyes examined right after wok on a Friday night when you might then be prescribed -1.50 or even -1.75. I hope I didn't totally confuse you with all that but if I did please let me know and I will try and explain better. When you were comparing the glasses in regard to the glare factor you were getting with the Zenni glasses. Did you order them with an AR coating? Zenni has thee AR coating as an option because they have 3 versions of that coating. Sort of a good, better and best, ranging in price for $4.95 to $14.95. In ordering glasses from Zenni i have always gotten the "good" version for the $4.95 price and never had even one complaint about it. I had one person request the "best" version and since her prescription was rather weak anyway her glasses were so clear that her glasses appeared to not have lenses in them at all. It was in my opinion almost too good. I'm not sure but I think Eye Buy Direct includes an AR coating with the cost of their lenses. Honestly, both sites are really quite good so it really depends on which site has glasses you like the best and the price of them.
    So I saw in your order form that your prescription is OD (right eye) -1.50 -.25 165 / OS (left eye) -1.50 -.50 025. That's usually about when you need to start wearing your glasses full time. But you're glasses are still considered to be in the weak range even though you aren't really able to function very well without glasses anymore except for things close up. In fact when doing any type of close work you should actually take your glasses off to prevent your eyes from permanently adjusting to them for close work which also includes applying makeup. You really don't want your eyesight to become an issue for you to see to do your makeup. It's okay to leave your glasses on if your just checking your phone for messages or in a restaurant looking at the menu. But anything that is going to require looking at something close for more than 15 - 20 minutes you should take your glasses off for. Based on your prescription i'm thinking that you may have only started wearing glasses maybe around 2 or 3 years ago? Am I right. By the way even though the cost of the 4 pairs of glasses you were comparing varied quite a bit all 4 looked really nice on you. I actually liked the Zenni glasses slightly better for fit. Also I would be very interested in what the overall width of each of the 4 frames are. That first pair of Zenni glasses I think were likely wider than the second pair which is why they were sliding off your face when you looked down,. Also even though your glasses were bought on line you can still take them to any optical store and have them fit or adjust them for you. Remember that every Walmart has a very nice Vision center right in the front of the store.
    If you have any vision questions or questions about your glasses or glasses in general please feel free to ask me. I really enjoy answering questions for people.

      Hi Jim, thanks for watching my video and taking time to share your expertise and thoughts,
      I believe the Costco prescription cost about $100.00, and the frames were around $59.00. I did pay extra for antiglare coatings. I think that was $30ish dollars. I noticed Costco carries designer brands in their stores that happen to be in affluent areas but not in blue-collar communities. Worth noting if you are not happy with their selection in any particular Costco warehouse.
      I feel for your daughter; it would be scary to be blinded by glair and have no idea it was coming. I heard of a student pilot having a hard/bouncy landing because they changed glasses prescriptions and because of that, they miss judged where the ground was.
      My husband says I notice everything and am sensitive. (not in a bad or good way) so that could be why different glasses seemed better. Thanks for the explanation.
      That's an impressive guess; I started wearing glasses about six years ago (my vision got worse during pregnancy), the prescription in the video is at least two years old. I haven't been in a hurry to get a new prescription during the pandemic. I had an appointment to go back to the optometrist then my state got stay-at-home orders.
      Thank you for the compliment; I thought the Zenni glasses were the most stylish as well. I am not sure what the with of each of the glasses is. I will have to find a tape measure and report back. My guess that the larger ones were most comfortable to me.
      Do you know why it seems like my eyes have to work harder/ become fatigued easier with contacts than with glasses?
      Other than Zinni and Eye Buy Direct, have you found anywhere you like to purchase glasses?
      It's been helpful talking with you!
      Nicole

      @@ItsNicholey Thank you for your reply. So your Costco glasses ended up costing you somewhere between $189.00 and $195.00. I believe the AR coating is in the area of $35.00 - $39.00 extra. So that's not terrible considering many people pay that much out of pocket even with insurance. I wasn't aware that the different warehouses carry different brands. I would think each store would carry the exact same frame selection because they buy in volume.
      I hired my daughter as an optical assistant when she turned 18. It was around that time when she was prescribed with her first glasses and she was excited about getting her first glasses. She was just getting adjusted to wearing her glasses when she was blinded on the way home from work one evening. Besides the glare she saw i'm pretty sure that oncoming car probably had their brights on which blinded even more. Yeah, I always made a point as I was fitting some one with their new glasses to be very cautious when driving because their depth perception could be slightly off until their eyes adjusted to their glasses or a new prescription. I'm sure that's exactly what happened to that student pitot as he or she was landing. Have you ever had any issues with that when you have gotten new glasses in a different prescription? Not with flying, but with driving and seeing the car in front of you. Really the best idea whenever you get a change in prescription is to wear your previous glasses for the rest of that day and the next morning start wearing your new glasses. Your eyes are always the freshest in the morning and much more willing to adjust to a change in prescription.
      You're husband is probably right, not meaning to take sides, some people are light sensitive which bothers their eyes and some are more sensitive to even a very slight difference in their prescription. And that's not a bad thing at all. Any difference you notice between your glasses i'm sure is very real. So even though your prescription for your glasses is -1.50 for both eyes with some astigmatism in both eyes your glasses could be slightly weaker or stronger than -1.50. When lenses for glasses are made they don't need to be exact to be considered as acceptable. They just need to be with a certain tolerance. So if a lens for your glasses was made in say a -1.31 prescription they would be under tolerance and rejected and a new lens would be made. But if it were at say -1.40 that would be considered as being within tolerance and acceptable. In most cases the patient wouldn't notice the lens being slightly weaker than what is called for. But for some that is more vision sensitive, like you, it's enough for you notice it. Now the same applies the other way. Your glasses could have a lens that is slightly stronger than -1.50 but still within tolerance. But being stronger would be more acceptable to you because nearly everyone would prefer having their eyes slightly over corrected rather than under corrected. I had an optician that always ordered her glasses -.25 and sometimes even -.50 over what her actual prescription called for because she knew she could see even better wearing an over correction. Our doctor knew she was doing this but he said she wasn't really doing any harm to her eyes by doing that and all it did was provide her with better than perfect vision. So instead of only being able to see 20/20 with her glasses she was able to see 20/15 with her glasses. So you really haven't been wearing glasses all that long. So if you don't mind be asking what was the first indication that caused you to go for an eye exam and get prescribed glasses for the first time? Was it maybe having trouble seeing the board at school, or was it maybe around the time when you were preparing to start driving? How scared were you the first time you wore them in front of your friends and family? Wearing glasses for the firs time is scary even if you always wanted glasses. You would be surprised at how many women don't know that pregnancy has a 50% chance of causing a change in eyesight. It will only increase or cause nearsightedness, never farsightedness. Nearsightedness, the technical name being "myopia" is caused by the eyes becoming elongated. So like everything else that is changed during pregnancy and being stretched, so are your eyes in many cases anyway. Over the year as an optician I have seen a lot of young ladies that always had perfect vision until they became pregnant and then things started becoming more and more blurry for them. I wish I had a dollar for how many asked how long they would have to wear glasses for before their eyesight went back to be perfect again? I had to tell them the truth, that their eyesight would never return to being perfect again. Those that already wore glasses didn't seem upset at all, but those getting glasses for the first time were a bit shocked.
      You must still be seeing rather well if you were confident enough to order 4 pairs of glasses from your prescription from 2 years ago. Do you remember, 2 years ago when you got your eyes examined did you need an increase then and if so how much of an increase did you get? If you know. I'm asking this because you should be getting close to not needing any increases in your glasses for a very long time. Generally that happens in your early to mid twenties. Sometimes sooner and sometimes later. Now that you have your glasses and as long as your eyesight seems fine you probably don't plan on getting your eyes examined until at least later this summer. But if you are still wearing contacts you are way past due with your yearly eye exam to renew them and order more contacts. But it also sounds like wearing glasses is more comfortable that wearing contacts. It's hard to say without actually looking into your eyes why your eyes seem to be working hared and you're getting eye fatigue. It makes sense that if your eyes are working hared then it's probably causing the eye fatigue as well from straining. One thing I can tell you is that you never want to force your eyes to do something they aren't comfortable doing or wearing. For now, until you're able to get your eyes examined, you should only be wearing glasses. Wearing glasses will never ever do any harm to your eyes. That's something I can't say about contacts considering how many patient's I have seen over the years with eye infections, eye ulcers and even with blood vessels growing into the sides of their eyes.
      You asked about other sites I can suggest to you. I have several for you not from my onw experience but rather from the girls that worked in the optical store where i worked at. Our store employed mostly attractive young ladies as our opticians and optical assistants. Nearly all of them wore glasses including several tat had perfect vision. Even though they received a free pair of glasses every 6 months as one of their benefits they still ere often on line ordering both glasses and prescription sunglasses on line. So I got to see all of these glasses when they received them, The sites i liked the best and offered good deals were Zeelool, Voogueme, and Payne Glasses. They are priced at about the same price as Zenni for their glasses. Something new I have noticed is that now many of these sites, including Zenni is offering matching jewelry to the glasses. Mostly earrings and necklaces. Some of the glasses now has a hole in the earpieces to hang the earrings form rather than your ears. I found that rather different but interesting.
      I'm always happy to be of help and if you have any other questions please ask me. I hope you're having a great day.

      I haven't bought my glasses yet. Last glasses are from Walmart (locally). And, yes, they were over $300
      And, no, I started wearing glasses when I was 10. I'm 76. My eye doctor says that my eyes are HEALTHY, BUT, I'm very nearsighted and have astimatism. He has been talking to me about cataracts since I went on Medicare!! I still don't feel like I need the surgery yet. I will check out Zenni. EBD advertises all over my phone. My eyes were last checked in Nov ! So, that's how old my prescription is. However, it has hardly changed at all. I'm lucky. But, if I have to spend $300+ for a new pair. ???

    Hi I would like to ask you about your buys.
    First off I chose to use Zenni Many years ago and have stuck with them I recommend them to everyone.
    I chose them after about `1 year of non stop searching. Ive bought both the glasses and replacement frames. I wear prescription bifocals. I was Initially impressed by their vast number of styles. They dont have as many options now. They quit carrying my favorites. Two of them I had bought 3 pair of. I would have gone without glasses when I needed them otherwise.
    Did you buy prescription glasses?
    Did you select the coating you wanted
    Did you choose the cheaper lenses or the better ones?
    I have never had an issue with glare. I have also tried 3 or 4 different color tints, as well as blue blockers and anit reflection and anti scratch coatings. These options cost more, but well worth it. And Ive bought the matching clip on shades once. And until they quit putting the coatings on the cheaper lenses, I chose the cheaper lenses.
    Ive always been happy with fit and quality. I am extremely hard on glasses.
    You really have to educate yourself about size and fit and PD.
    I dont know if the other site you compared is one I looked at before. I just found the one that worked well for me .
    I order at least one $6.95. frame pair each year. I use them for my computer glasses....I fall asleep with them on most nights.
    I place them equal to the last $380.00 glasses I bought over 10 years ago. My prices for a complete pair of glasses ranges from $29.00 -- 63.00.
    Thanks for the video. It was well done..Except for true comparison you must include exact same coatings and tints and quality of lenses and RX.

    The review is good as far as it goes. Regarding lenses from Zenni there are a number of options to consider, such as antireflective coating, photochromatic (transitions), and various index/thicknesses. If the reviewer had gotten the AR coating on the Zenni glasses she wouldn't have had the glare problem. You can get good glasses online IF you do your homework and make the best choices. Also Zenni's shipping time has improved; I've purchased from them three times this year and every time the glasses came in 7-10 days. By the way, if the glasses need adjusting some local optical shops will do that for free; for instance Lenscrafters does free adjustments and just asks for a positive Google review.

    I just ordered glasses with Eye Buy Direct. I was looking at Zenni at first but found their try ons extremely inaccurate so it was hard to tell the actual size of the glasses on my face. This video shows a lot more options to adjust the photo for the try on than I was able to use, maybe because I was using my phone. I found Eye Buy Direct to be a more professional website since the frames actually had names, and I was able to keep my favourites without them being erased every 10 minutes like I experienced with Zenni. I think if I need some fashion coloured sunglasses or a fun occasional pair of glasses in the future I would go through Zenni, but for quality glasses I need everyday I trust Eye Buy Direct more (and that’s before even receiving glasses from them).
    I also noticed with Zenni that they had a kind of shady return policy, a lot of reviews stating customer service issues, problems with the quality of the frames, and a lot of reviews saying they didn’t receive exactly what they ordered (wrong lens tint).

Since you wear glasses were you able to compare the size of the Zenni glasses to your current glasses to know they would be a good fit on you? I checked out the pair you wanted the number for and they seem a bit on the wide side. They are 144mm (millimeters) Before ordering any glasses on line you should first find a ruler that has millimeters on it. Then measure across the face portion of your own glasses that you feel fits you the best. Then try and get as close to that same size as possible. Never use the virtual try on to determine fit. In your picture you're wearing glasses so would i be right in assuming that you wear glasses full time? I'm only asking that because if you do wouldn't it be nice to have more than one pair of glasses to wear? Since you can get glasses in your prescription for about the same cost of a Big Mac Combo meal why not have several pairs of glasses? That way everyday you can match your glasses to the outfit you plan on wearing that day. Being able to change your "look" simply by changing your glasses makes wearing glasses more enjoyable.

    • @mostguitarswins
      @mostguitarswins ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Good question. My first pair of progressives were perfectly positioned vertically. The second pair the segments were just a little high; I was able to correct that by adjusting the nose pads so the frame sat a little lower on my face. You could message Zenni customer service, but in any case I suggest getting frames with adjustable nose pads so you can tweak them if necessary.

    I'm concerned about the quality of the lenses. My RX is trifocles with no lines. I'm 76 and have no insurance to Pay for glasses. What if I get my glasses frames online but they are crappy? Who will adjust them? Wal-Mart!!?

    • @ItsNicholey
      @ItsNicholey  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Costco will adjust them for free. Most eyeglass places like lense crafters will help also. At least that's my understanding. I'm pretty sure Costco will. I don't have experience with trifocals, but I would assume If zenni or eye buy direct offer trifocals, they will be ok. You might want to try cheap frames from Costco. I have had fantastic experiences with them.

    I just got glasses from zenni and absolutely hated them. They are asymmetrical in a way that I absolutely hate and can't repair or ignore! and the return option is just a huuuge hastle. They do not make it easy on you. I have just placed another order with eyebuydirect and I reallyyy hope that they come in better shape than the zennis that i received. Thanks for the review!

    Just something I noticed while watching your comparisons: The cheap Zenni glasses have absolutely no 'green' reflection when you look at the camera and the more expensive Zenni glasses do. This would tell me that you didn't purchase the anti-glare on the cheap Zenni's, but did on the more expensive Zenni's and hence those don't have the glare that the cheaper ones do. Anti-glare at Zenni costs an extra $ 4.95, so not a big deal. I just bought the more expensive pair of Zenni's for my mom. Hope she'll like them. They look good on you, too. I like them better than the Eyebuy Direct ones, tbh.

    • @ItsNicholey
      @ItsNicholey  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That’s a good observation; I didn’t get the anti-reflection for the cheaper zenni glasses because I was trying to the price under $10. If you can afford the anti-reflection coating, it’s well worth it.
      Thank you for the compliment! How does your mom like her new glasses? Agree that zenni is more fashionable.

      I personally had a great experience with them & would definitely order from them again. FYI zenni and eye buy direct have affordable sunglasses options with frames. Hope this helps.

    How do Americans ensure their frame size is correct? Length of arm, width of frame and how they sit on one's nose? Do Americans have a secret method on how to get these measurements just right?

    • @ItsNicholey
      @ItsNicholey  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The width between the pupils is on the prescription. I tried glasses on at Costco and noted what size (between the ears) frames fit me best. I find spring hinges help the glasses to feel more comfortable and not too tight. The arm length is much more difficult to guess when buying online. I bought the blue pair from eye buy direct and found when I sat back on my couch, my classes moved forward a half-inch. It was unexpected and annoying.

Both had bifocal, thin and light, transitions and every other add on. Total: £580:00 English pounds, for both pair. I insisted a qualified Optician fitted the frames. This has NOT been done right. I've discovered a one week course teaching 'How To Fit New Spectacles, ' cost £300:00 British pounds. I might do this course as it's the only way I'll ever get frames fitted right for me. Haha😅😅 There are obviously measurements, I find it hard to believe that that isn't a standard thing in other countries because it's only logical. 😅
      There are measurements for the width and height of the frames, the measurement of the width between the frames (the bridge), the total with across the entire front, and the measurement of the length of the arms.

    Eyebuydirect has good prices but, the quality of the frames are so cheap, they can be too weak or too hard and same with lenses, their "polycarbonate" break so easy and shatter like glass, same with "High Index" they are always thick asf. The coatings? Well the purpleish tint gets rid of AR so if you buy Blue light, AR won't work Lmao plus the AR itself is trashy. Oakley? Well they just use the same lenses they always provide so no Oakley lenses. Prescription? Hahaha
