That color Lamy LX was my first non-Safari. I love that pen. I bought mine with an extra-fine nib and filled it with Diamine chocolate brown. I love that pen. It's one of my almost daily carry writers. :)
I have the Lamy LX Marron (F) as well. I use the converter with it and I have Noodlers Walnut brown ink in it. A great combination! This pen is an every day use pen for me and I get lots of comments on the ink color, but I absolutely love all my Lamys!!
DB- Great video. I love the Lamy Safari, Vista, and Al-Star versions. That pen is indeed great looking. I have never had any hard starts or leaking with any of my pens.
Great review. I really like the color and look of the Lamy LX Marron and Lamy Notebook. I've been curious about the notebook and now disappointed to see the feathering. I have several Lamy Safari's and an AL and thought about adding this pen to the collection. I recently added a Kaweco Skyline Sport in Macchiato, my fav coffee, to my small collection and paired it with the creamy whipped chocolate looking Diamine Raw Sienna. A perfect swirl of coffee with cream! Keep up the great work!
That's a nice looking gift set. I've looked at that Marron for a long time and just never ordered it. The color is really appealing to me. Love the ink as well. I think even though the notebook isn't the most fountain friendly, it's definitely not bad for $4 more. Thanks for the review!
That's quite a nice pen! I really like their "two tone" nibs with the gold and now this black with the pvd coating. I also really like that Herbin ink color shade, too. It's everything I wanted in the chocolate scented ink, but better. 😂 It's rather unfortunate that the paper wasn't exceptionally FP friendly, but it does look like a nice general use notebook.
Nice review. I got this pen a little over a year ago as one of the first fountain pens I ever purchased. The color is what originally caught my eye and I really like the aluminum construction and finials. I don't usually pair pen/ink colors, but I have a bottle of Noodler's Kiowa Pecan that looks nice in this pen. This was my work notebook pen for most of the last year and I loved it. I switched to some other pens for a while, but this one keeps coming back and I'm writing with it again today. After a year of heavy use the finish on the end of the barrel is starting to wear off a little. Nothing horrible, just shows that this is a pen that's been used rather than collecting dust in a drawer.
Good review. I have a Lamy notebook that I haven't used, yet, so I have been wondering what width nib I should use. This was a fine example for me. Thanks. No one has tested the notebook that I know of. Also, your further demonstration of your Homo Sapiens was great. I have avoided buying one due to its price and the wetness of the nib. Your nibmeister did a great job. Maybe that is what I can do. Now, to find a Homo Sapiens for a reasonable price...
I live just across the water from Victoria bc and wonder what pen shop you visited. Great video and that ink is on of my favorites too. Currently have it inked up in a Vanishing Point
I went to The Papery which is downtown on Fort Street. Nice little shop with a decent selection. They have a huge selection of journals/notebooks too! Another store nearby is called Simply The Best. Its right across the street from Pagliacci's. He has a larger selection of pens, but the store is kinda chaotic 😆
When I found this pen on dealer's website, I wondered about the name. It's not "maroon", but marron (which the dictionary says is "A large and particularly sweet kind of chestnut." The color of the pen makes more sense to me now (not a kind of red, but a kind of brown). Good review. I've been eyeing this one for a while, and, so far, have not pulled the trigger.
Nuce pen think Lamy do a good job of making decent affordable pens. I decided that I wanted an EDC for work and got one cheap on one of the sites. It works well but I’m not a massive fan. The Lamy Al Star. Lamy Studio with a 1.9 stub works for me a seriously good pen. Great video.
Great review, as always.👍Not to nit-pick but I just did a long review of this pen on our pen club's (Vancouver Pen Club's) site and here's what I found out when I was researching this model: --Re: that trim on the "Marron" --I have the same pen in "Rose Gold" and it is not the same trim. In their YT video introducing the "Marron", Lamy mentions the pen's "bronze colour metal clip and details PVD coated with bronze". --Re: the Lamy logo on the end of the barrel, Brian Goulet did a video introducing the 'Lx' and he said the logo on the 'Lx' was double-anodized, calling it a "pioneering and innovative technique that Lamy (was) trying". --The 'Lx' comes in five colours--Marron, Rose Gold, Gold, Palladium and Ruthenium. The 'Lx' Z 52 nibs are available for purchase separately in four nib widths (EF, F, M and B)! I got one from the Boutique du Stylo (in Montreal) website for my Lamy 'Accent' to spiff it up 😀.
@@Doodlebud My pleasure! it took me forever to write the review of the 'Lx' on our club's site because of all the research, so I figure I'd mention it here too lol.
Keep an eye out for sales etc at Penchalet. They have stuff going on pretty often and maybe you can catch it on deal. They will most likely have a July 4th even since they are based in the USA
My choice for the first review in your poll at the w/e. The weight comparison v the AL-star and Safari was very helpful (I know I'm ok with the section and it's easy to swap the nib). Thanks!
3:19 - "Wouldn't it be embarrassing...?" - turned out to be somewhat foreshadowing. It's not "writing on bog-roll" terrible, but in the context of a gift set, it's not great - this could be someone's introduction to the world of fountain pens, and surely Lamy don't want the experience to be disappointing in any way.
Yeah I just had to say what I was thinking before I was testing in it 😂 So odd that wasn't checked before they bundled it together 🤔. Especially since this is a "Gift Set" it could definitely be for a FP newbie, they wouldn't know the deal with why the pens is doing that on the paper.
@@Doodlebud I wonder who made the Lamy notebook - the same maker as Moleskine, which I longer use because of IMO it is not fountain pen friendly? The lines are interesting, and remind me of the scribblers we used for a while in grade school when learning to print and to write in cursive. As for the pen, I like Lamy, and have found their nibs generally write as well as those on more expensive pens.
If you want an ink that matches the colour I think Iroshizuku Tsukushi would be a great match. I picked up the LX Marron at a good price recently (not the gift set) and I was really impressed with it compared to the Safari. I find the Safari feels and looks very cheap in comparison. The extra weight of the LX (and I assume the Al Star) is a big positive for me. The medium nib on my LX was really smooth right from the start. I have mine inked with Waterman Absolute Brown and it’s a pretty good pairing, I still think the Tsukushi would be even better, but for less than 1/3 the price the Waterman looks pretty good and is well behaved. The finish on the LX certainly looks nice in person compared to in most photos and videos. I wouldn’t pay full price for it though, but on sale plus an extra 20% off when I got it it was worthwhile.
I have a moto to always try to get something below regular retail price. There's always a sale, offer, discount, something to be had! This one really stands out compared to a Al Star
@@Doodlebud definitely - unless there’s something unique that never goes on sale I always shop around seem to find a good price. BTW, I just put a 1.1 italic (it’s more of a cursive italic, not sure if you’ve tried one) on my Safari yesterday, and now it’s a great writer - in fact I like it so much I wish I could get a black one for the LX.
I have the Rose Gold LX and loved it so much I upgraded to a gold nib. For the notebook, kind of felt that would happen. As big as Germany is in using fountain pens, it’s bizmare Leuchtrum feathers as well. I don’t get it.
Good point on the Leuchtrum! It is a bit odd though. Lamy is so on point with design, manufacturing, inspection, etc... but didn't close the loop on the paper?🤔
P.S. Not sure if you can answer this question.... According to Lamy's official website, the 'Lx' body is made of "Aluminium, anodised, with precious metal colour" whereas on their site, Goulet Pens says it's made of "double-anodized aluminum". The same Lamy site describes the Lamy 'Al-star' as being made of "high quality" aluminum. So are the 'Lx' and 'Al-star' are made of the same material, or different? I couldn't find an answer online.
The term "high quality" will just refer to the grade of the aluminum. Not sure which grade they would call "high quality" but a very common one is 6061. Im not too sure about Goulet's claim on double-anodizing. Double anodizing would be using 2 different colours where one colour is applied but a portion of the pen is masked off. Then the process is repeated to get the other colour. There are different anodizing types (1,2,3) where the higher the number is a harder coating, but the tradeoff is a reduced selection in available colours. On this LX, it appears they had a bit of a different surface finish on the LAMY logo to give that different shine from the rest of the pen body. Maybe the body is a satin finish & logo is polished finish prior to anodizing? Just a guess... The LX & AL Star are most likely the same grade of aluminum. Could be 6061 or maybe a harder grade Aluminum to allow for a thinner wall thickness. That might explain how they have but of a higher cost 🤔. But my personal guess of the grade of Al use to make the AL & LX would be 1100. It's the purest grade (hence "high quality" marketing lingo) but is also the best for forming operations which is how I think (not 100% sure) the pen is made. Thats the one I would pick
@@Doodlebud I knew I could count on you to provide an answer (or educated conjecture 😏)--many thanks! The Goulet Pens site mentions the different Lx models that they sell all being "double-anodized" and they're referring to the body of the pen, not just the logo (Brian Goulet mentioned the Lamy logo being double-anodized in their YT video introducing the Lx). Brian visited the Lamy factory and GP is an authorized dealer so I wonder if he has some "inside info" because he's usually a stickler for accuracy (well, that's my impression anyway). In any case, the Lx is definitely the upscale cousin of the Al-Star for the finials and nib alone, regardless of whether they're made of the same material or not, I guess!
I have the LX Rose Gold set, love it! Just ordered the Marron (not Maroon) set also because of a great deal. The paper is disappointing, but my husband likes it, and it's actually fairly expensive outside of a gift set.
Not sure the price is worth... probably al-star still the better value. If they would of made the section out of metal as well, I think that would of been a nicer upgrade. And they really need to start adding the converter with the pen at this price point.
Including a converter would be nice for sure. I could see how they done for the regular Safari, but with this one I think it should be included (I think they're doing ok as a company). If you get a giftset that comes with ink they include one on those.
@@Doodlebud Yep, Lamy does good stuff, but sometimes it feels like any other German company... they try and milk you for every screw they put in the box :D. I mean, I get it... but come on... at some point in time you gotta give a little as well :). At this point the converter has more value than that notebook they included :D :D :D.
