According to Chris Wharton, John's guitar was painted by Charlie Bantam who used to paint cars. He painted it with black Tecaloid enamel which was the make of coach paint used on the vehicles. It certainly had several coats of paint and it took several days to complete. It was done in Birkenhead not London, sometime in September 1962.😊

Thanks for the correction and thanks for watching. I still have to do the followup on the guitar.
My next guitar painting vlog will be the Magical Mystery Tour Artwork on a Chinese Ric 4001c64 bass

Hope to see some video of your band and looking forward to the final 325 product

Oh you'll see the band alright!
And in two weeks there will be consecutive vlogs during the trip to rehearsal! And be sure to watch the vlog coming up on July 6th because I will be joined by a very special celebrity guest star. He's not as well known as most of the stars of Hollywood but he does have quite a resume!
      I think you'll enjoy it

Cool to see your videos on my feed. I'm looking at getting a Chickenbacker myself and it's been a lot of fun weeding through Aliexpress listings for a variety of Rick guitars, finding the most accurate one to 325c64. Admittedly, a lot of the guitars coming from China are pretty cool (saw a hollow-body Gibson Les Paul which I didn't know someone had thought of, as well as an acoustic guitar shaped like a Gibson Explorer) and it's nice to see them getting the appreciation they deserve!

Thank you very much! From what I've read and been told by many, John simply sprayed it while back stage at the Cavern.

@@theincredibleimpression i have over 70 guitars and oddly in my 60 years of playing i never held a 325 and when it came in i was shocked at how tiny this guitar is and i kept thinking no way was Johns 325 this small but wow it is lol

      @Anne6621 Wow that's incredible!
I hope this tutorial helps you and many others know more of how to sand and paint it.
I was going to order a black one but I ultimately decided since John's was originally natural, later painted black and being the stickler I am for true authenticity I ordered the natural color and looked through literally hundreds of photos and was able to discover the aging effect and wear of the black finish.

Hi, did you ever post a final vid on this guitar?

Unfortunately not yet. My luthier is currently on tour with his band and won't be available until mid January. It's coming though. Stay tuned

The only inaccuracy problem with the Chickenbacker copies is usually the tapered neck width is too wide at the bottom end and neck heel joint to the body and fretboard is much higher than the real deal, the bridge has to be in a high adjustment, with heavy gauge 12-54 strings to make these short scale guitar playable in tune. 🎶🎸🎶🎸

Why not just buy the black version? They sell all versions!

Sorry for what I'm about to say but this was painful to watch. You keep pre-empting criticism by saying you have no experience. Y'know, you could watch other channels and make mental notes of what they do. Knowing that you don't know is the first step, then change that.
As far as Lennon's paint job, because of its shiny smooth texture I tend to personally believe it was professionally painted, whether by the legendary carriage painter or a reported luthier .
John was an all round artist but I don't think he possessed the technical precision lest it wind up texture-wise like George Harrison's later "Rocky".

No problem bro. I'm not offended. I thank you for your honest criticism. Most people take constructive criticism the wrong way but I take it as a learning experience.
I know I kept repeating myself and it bothered me too considering I'm very OCD.
I do appreciate you watching the video though. I want to become more familiar with guitar restoration and repainting over time.👍
